THE PROBLEM V'lTH PREACHING

Mot very long ago,

I made the
statement that I have always given

preaching first priority. This.Is

still true but my enthusiasm for

vji CO

preaching sermons
cool

has

begun

to

1ittle bit.

The trouble Is

that the Christ

ians of Kanpur have made it a

craze to preach sermons to each
other, at the same time neglecting
3ible study, and neglecting also
the 58^ of the population who know
little of what Christianity Is all

about.

Can one hear too many sermons?

Definitely yeswhen one hears and
hears and does nothing with what
he learns. To be a
"hear only"
is one of the quickest ways to
harden your heart.
That reminds me of the prophet
Isaiah.

is

true

that

Isaiah

preached repentance but from Isa.

6, we learn that God's purpose in
ordaining him to preach was that
his preaching should harden the
hearts

of his listeners;

and

in

that he was very successful

And that reminds me

How can some of

Shouldn't we spend

more time with nonChristians?

There was one baptism here on July 3rdJ Shakuntala, the fourth of five
daughters of Puttu Lai. Puttu lives in a village fifty miles from Kanpur hut
he has not nepfl.ected to see that his children become baptized at a proper age.

On our part, we have also helped his children, one ly one, to get an education.
Otherwise, Puttu has a pugilisttc personality that enables him to make enemies
easily and for the wrong reasons.
I was due to go to Allahabad on Saturday July l6th to attend a committee

meeting of the Bible.Society, and so I decided to go one day early and visit
an old friend who was suffering from canceri However, one day before ny
planned departure, I got a telegram at 6 a.m. Informing me that ny friend had
died arid that her faneral would be that afternoon, 1 caught the bus at 8 a.m,
arriving in Allahabad at 2: 30 p.m. It was raining hard and the streets were
flooded but eventually I reached the home of the deceased. My entrance, just

The good news is that an organs

edition of ny book, "ABCs of the Christian Faith. " The sad part of it is
that the Hindi edition is still far from ready. The promises of our publisher,
Lawrence Lazarus, that he would fini^ the hock quickly, have so far gone for

For the first time in 6000 years, it ianow possible to drive directly to
Kulpahar from Kanpur during the rainy season. Last year, the bridge across

the Jumna Blver was opened, and now this month traffic has begun crossing the
new bridge on the Betwa Biver,

Within the next couple of weeks, I hope to

take the Bible Chariot (ny three-wheeler) down to Kulpahar vlth a load of
books. Miss Moshier has handed out some Rs. 1000 worth of gift certificates
which are to be redeemed at our bookstall. In preparation for this Grand
Sale, I have ordered supplies from Hew Delhi, Bombay, Madras and Calcutta.
When ell of the shipments get here, I will tgke off for Kulpahar with the lot
and come back with the loot.

The Bible Chariot continues to be a big help, especially when it rains.

Unfortunately we are not able to use it much at night because the back light

and breke light are usually not woiking, despite^;^ch expense and effort.

It seems that "Sie wiring cannot stand the bu^eiy hisnps.

SHIAS AND SUNN IS

Muslims are divided Into two main

groups, the Shias and the Sunnis.

These two groups know how to unite
against a common enemy but at other
times they fight each other.
Trouble this time started in Luck-

now, the state capitol, when the

Shias were permitted to take out a

procession and the Sunnis (who are

in tb.^ minority in Lucknow) were not
permitted. At least eioht people
died in the rioting that followed.
The next morning the news appeared
in the Kanpur newspapers fifty miles
away where the Sunnis are the major
Muslim group.
In this respect you
can consider Kanpur to be the Irish

Free State (Catholic), and Lucknow

to be Northern Ireland (Protestant),

but ordinarily
Sunnis
are more
peaceable than Shias.
That morning at about 10,1 was
riding through the Muslim area when
the Sunnis began to take revenge on
the Shias. Smoke was billowing down
the street, some people were gawking
and others were scattering.
I went on my way as though nothing
were happening and attended to a
small piece of business. However,
five minutes later the police came
and ordered everyone home. I was one
of the first out of sight.
Officials say seven were killed in
Kanpur but exact figures are often
withheld in order to prevent further
revenge. Much property was also des
troyed and

had to be evacuated.
