More than 76 yeara later, my father has departed in the company of the presi

"^brman Maynard, our pastor at Clinton, telephoned me on February 9th to
let rae know of Dad*s criticsl condition, then affain on the 10th to let me know
that he had passed away. After receiving the first call, I was able to make
good progress in getting my documents together for a quick trip to the tj#S.,
but all of ray plans and hopes were dashed when news^ came of the sudden deatb
of the president in Ti^ew Delhi. All offices, banks isuid stores closed immedi

The situation is now as it was two years ago. Perhaps I could have

is eaiy late news about this, I will add it at the end.
While all of this was going on, I got a tooth extracted. The last time .
I got a tooth extracted was in London in 1947. My guess is that if I had been
living in the U.S. during these past: 30 years, the ihnerican diet would have
left rae dth few teeth.of my own. Indian sweets are not as damaging to the
teeth as are American sweets.

The noneoon (that is, the rainy season), started about July 1st.
The fanners
who wore ooinplaining about lack of water several we4:s apo are now conplaiulng
that they have too mdi. Let us hope that during the Millenium, the Lord will
be able to satisfy all of the farmers of all of the nations.
There was one baptism here on July 3rdJ Shakuntala, the fourth of five
daughters of Puttu Lai. Puttu lives in a village fifty miles from Kanpur hut
he has not nepfl.ected to see that his children become baptized at a proper age.
On our part, we have also helped his children, one ly one, to get an education.
Otherwise, Puttu has a pugilisttc personality that enables him to make enemies
easily and for the wrong reasons.
I was due to go to Allahabad on Saturday July l6th to attend a committee
meeting of the Bible.Society, and so I decided to go one day early and visit
an old friend who was suffering from canceri However, one day before ny
planned departure, I got a telegram at 6 a.m. Informing me that ny friend had
died arid that her faneral would be that afternoon, 1 caught the bus at 8 a.m,
arriving in Allahabad at 2: 30 p.m. It was raining hard and the streets were
flooded but eventually I reached the home of the deceased. My entrance, just
aa fhe lid was being closed, was as dramatic as I have ever made.
There is some good news that makes us sadi
isatioh called "Every Home Crusade" has ordered 1000 copies of the Hindi
edition of ny book, "ABCs of the Christian Faith. " The sad part of it is
that the Hindi edition is still far from ready. The promises of our publisher,
Lawrence Lazarus, that he would fini^ the hock quickly, have so far gone for
nau^t.
For the first time in 6000 years, it ianow possible to drive directly to
Kulpahar from Kanpur during the rainy season. Last year, the bridge across
the Jumna Blver was opened, and now this month traffic has begun crossing the
new bridge on the Betwa Biver,
take the Bible Chariot (ny three-wheeler) down to Kulpahar vlth a load of
books. Miss Moshier has handed out some Rs. 1000 worth of gift certificates
which are to be redeemed at our bookstall. In preparation for this Grand
Sale, I have ordered supplies from Hew Delhi, Bombay, Madras and Calcutta.
When ell of the shipments get here, I will tgke off for Kulpahar with the lot
and come back with the loot.
and breke light are usually not woiking, despite^;^ch expense and effort.
My new scooter was delivered in April, 15 months after it was ordered, Iwt
it was not expedient to regd-ster it until the 1967 scooter had been sold. It
was finally registered on July 1st receiving the license number UTZ 5001. The
numbers here do not change ftom year to year but continue as long as the
vehicle is on the road.
Good rec^pts during the past months have permitted us to buy new type for
the print shop. The machine will also he overhauled soon. We will probably
have to make some new arrangement for the contimance of our Hindi magazine
because the arrangement made a year ago has not woiked out veiy well.
The thirtieth anniversary of ny arrival in India will not be celebrated
but it will be remembered with thanksgiving on August 3rd.
