Pipeline pigging is the method of using a device that goes through a pipeline to aid in
cleaning, inspection or dimensioning. The devices that move through the pipelines are generally
called "pigs." There are several types of pigs to name a few; foam pigs, wire brush pigs, bidirectional pigs, etc.
Cleaning a pipeline by pigging is important as soon as construction of a pipeline has been
completed. A pig is first used to remove debris left over after construction such as lunch boxes,
tools, dead animals, and many other items that might have got stuck in a pipe. Pigging is also an
important maintenance procedure for keeping pipelines from corroding, or cracking and to detect
any problems present on the inside of a pipeline.
Pipeline gauging uses bi-directional pig with a gauge plate attached on it. This plate will
verify if a pipeline is shaped correctly. Damaged or abnormal bend of the plate after the process
signifies that the pipeline has damaged.

knowledge of the pipeline, meticulous planning and management. Pigging is a critical process in

aggressive enough, or even deposits such as wax have been too hard to remove or indeed laid down
in between pig runs, false assumptions of cleanliness can be made which will later cause problems
when running intelligent pigs
