BRAE 213 students

You have been automatically enrolled in the
ENGR 213 PolyLearn page.

This course will be run from the ENGR 213 page,

but you will still get your grade for BRAE 213.

Course Syllabus

Course Description: The purpose of this course

is to develop students appreciation for the
biological sciences and the interplay between
biology and engineering. When possible, we will
revisit parts of the material that may be covered
in BIO 213. We will also be using some simple
tools and techniques common to all engineering
disciplines

12 years teaching

3rd year at Cal Poly

Research Interests

Cardiac electrophysiology and arrhythmias

Cardiovascular Disease

The leading cause of death for men & women

Accounts for one quarter of the deaths in the

United States each year (600,000+)

Care costs over $300 billion/ year (2% of GDP)

Half of CV-related. deaths are due to coronary

artery disease (CAD)

In the time it takes you to read this slide, there has

been one more heart attack in the U.S.

Cardiac arrhythmias:

Lead to most CV-related deaths by way of a lethal

arrhythmia (Sudden Cardiac Death)

Cause 850,000 hospitalizations per year

6 million in U.S. have atrial arrhythmias (2%)

25% of people will have atrial arrhythmia in their

lifetime

Bioengineering/Biomedical Engineering
Advances knowledge in engineering, biology,
and medicine

Improves human health through crossdisciplinary activities

Integrates the engineering sciences with the

biomedical sciences and clinical practice.

Examples of Bioengineering work:

designing and constructing cardiac
pacemakers, defibrillators, artificial
kidneys, blood oxygenators, hearts, blood
vessels, joints, arms, and legs.
designing computer systems to monitor
patients during surgery or to monitor
healthy persons in unusual environments
(e.g., astronauts in space or underwater
divers at great depth).

Examples of Bioengineering work:

designing and building sensors to
measure blood chemistry, such as
potassium, sodium, 02, CO2, and pH.
designing instruments and devices
for therapeutic uses, such as a laser
system for eye surgery or a device for
automated delivery of insulin.
