PART B: ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS


I.

READING COMPREHENSION

1. Read a sentence with one space and choose (tick or circle) one word or
phrase from the alternatives given that best fills in the space.
2. Read a text and do one of the following activities:
a. Answer the questions which are given below it.
b. Choose the answers (A, B, C, D) which you think fits the question best
according to the text.

c. Choose from the list of summary sentences given to match with of the
paragraphs of the text (There is one extra sentence which you do not need to
use).
d. Choose from the list of sentences/paragraphs given the most suitable
sentence/paragraph to put into each space. In the case of sentence insertion,
there is one extra sentence, which you do not need to use.
e. Insert one word which best fits each space in the text.

II.

WRITING

1. Sentence correction
- Read a sentence and identify the word/phrase which is not acceptable in some
way, then write the correction.
Example: Diamnonds are graded according to weigh, color, and cut.

b. Read a sentence or a text carefully. Some of the sentences/lines are correct


and some have a word which is not needed. If a sentence/line is correct, put a
tick (v) and if a sentence/line has a word which is not needed, write the word
that should be removed by the number.
Examples:
.....Before... 1. This years annual local festival was one of the best weve ever
had before.
...........v.......2. Almost everyone who lives in the town either took part in it or
watched it.
2. Sentence building and Paraphrasing

a. Use the words given to complete the second sentence so that it has a similar
meaning to the first one. Keep the given word unchanged (or change the form of
the word if needed).
Example: Your car really needs a wash. (washed)
You really must get/have your car washed soon.
b. Make one complex sentence from each group of sentences.
Example: Who is your audience? Make a note of that.
Make a note of who your audience is.
c. Use your own words to make the second sentence so that it has a similar
meaning to the first one.
Example: I fastened her in my heart.
I never forgot her / I kept her memory in my heart.
3. Summarizing
a. Summarise a text by using the underlined words in it.
b. Summarise a text by using one sentence or a number of sentences (in your
own words).
4. Composition writing
a. Use the words given to write a paragraph about a topic.
b. Write a 200-word composition on a topic.

III.

TRANSLATION (English-Vietnamese/Vietnamese-English)

1. Translate from one language into the other the underlined parts/sentences
of a text (a newspaper article or a book extract)
2. Translate a whole text from one language into the other language.
