This weeks Parsha, (a double

parsha) Acharei Mot- Kedoshim,
discusses the death of Arons
sons, the Yom Kippur Service,
holiness, parents, Shabbat, and
idols. As a part of the Yom
Kippur service, the Kohen
Gadol took some of the bulls
and goats blood and placed the
mixture on the horns all around
the Mizbeach. The Kohen Gadol
particularly rejoiced when this
service was done. For seven days
before Yom Kippur, the Kohen
Gadol would separate from his
household and dwell alone, and
on Yom Kippur a special oering
was brought for Klal Yisrael and
one for the Kohen Gadol
himself. The goat oering would
be for the community and the
bull would be for the Kohen
Gadol. But, he was troubled by
the fact that he would not be
included with the community.
Nevertheless, when he reached
the part of the service when the
blood of his oering would be
mixed with the blood of the
community oering, the Kohen

Gadol was once again reunited

with Bnei Yisrael, and so he was
filled with joy. To feel empathy
for anothers experience reflects
tremendous sensitivity, and often
greatness.
What this means to us is that
what we accomplish in Bnei
Akiva as a group represents our
commitment to Torah and all it
stands for. We have done a lot
together this year and should
feel proud of the dierence that
we have made in the
community.

History: 18 Iyar
In the weeks between Pesach and
Shavuot, a plague decimated 24,000
students of the great sage Rabbi Akiva-a result, says the Talmud, of the fact that
they "did not respect one another." The
plague's cessation on Iyar 18the 33rd
day of the Omer Count or "Lag
BaOmeris one of the reasons that the
day is celebrated each year.
Interestingly enough, on the same
Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai ("Rashbi"),
who was a leading disciple of Rabbi
Akiva, died many years after the
plague. On the day of his passing,
Rabbi Shimon gathered his disciples
and revealed many of the deepest
secrets of the divine wisdom, and
instructed them to mark the date as
"the day of my joy."
