THE DTU COLLOQUIAL

AS every city, town or village has its conversational language, DTU has one of its
own, filled with several acronyms and slangs, each one of its kind.
Here is a sneak peak into the local lingo out here in DTU
1) GHISSU - The typical nerds who have an insatiable capacity of mugging and
grasping every single word uttered by the teacher or those preached by the
prescribed books. This is the species that shines on the result day and is on
high demand when exams are nearing.
2) DAY SKI An acronym for day scholars, forever cribbing species of their
travelling woes and for not getting to relish the hostel fun.
3) MECH-C - The Mechanical Canteenthe cheapest, biggest and the most
amazing of all. The most populated hall in the whole college on an average
day! Fully equipped with a 7.1 surround home theatre system.
4) ELEC-C - The Electrical Canteen. As the name suggests, its in the electrical
block. Smaller in comparison, but has it all!
5) NESKI - The Nescafe. Expensive, too good for your friends treat. Savouring
its coffee when it rains ( campus is at its best this time), the key to ultimate
feel.
6) MIC MAC - A small canteen on the way to the senior hostels. Also called as
night canteen( open till 3AM). Famous for paranthas, Chicken burger and
Masala Soda.
7) CC - The Computer Centre. Its inside the TnP( Training and Placement)
building. A good place for people to really study or research into something
over the internet. But all your favourite sites are blocked! And they dont read
ur external storage devices too!
8) MAGGI BABA - An aged person who is fondly called Maggi Baba serves
maggi and tea near the campus gate during the night. Available from 8 pm to
3 am. Beware that u dont break his tea cups!
9) BACK - Although heard during the entire season, but its iteration frequency
increases manifold during the exams time, when half of DTUs population
exclaim, Iss subject mein toh pakka back! .

CR - Acronym for the class representative ( just a more courteous
word for the class monitor at schools!). A CR is the one who organizes MASS
BUNKS..( ensuring that even the most determined ghissu is not attending the

class!), one who is the sole connection between the class students and the
teacher( in terms of assignment distribution, assignment submission, notes
distribution, etc), one who is responsible for all the madness done by his/her
class and the one who has an importance of electing the office bearers of the
college.

SPOT ROUND -The word may become famous in some classes when few students join the college late due to their admission in Spot Round!
These students may have to face some problem after the attendance when
the teacher goes away without taking their attendance, and they have to run
after them! Most of allthey feel they got less time for the preparation of
midsems due to their late admission! (Well, ask the others. Its the same
actually!!)

SOME TIPS AT HAND

Call your seniors by sir or Maam , unless they themselves ask you to
call them by name or didi/bhaiya.

Sector sola- satra, DC kalege, DC kalege!..Ina few weeks now, you

will be accustomed to these golden words from every grameen seva
driver who barks out every day at the top of his voice to every
passenger who steps down from those blessed stairs of Rithala Metro
station. You then sit in the overcrowded auto with over ten passengers
cramped inside savouring the outside environment that lies in the
background. You pass by a strange land, away from the hustle and
bustle of South Delhi, faraway from the posh Select City Walk or the
busy CP..

The beautiful OAT can be found crowded at any time of the year with
the students seated in large groups busy chit- chatting about the latest
gadget in town, that super-hit Hollywood flick, that cute guy in software
or that girl from ECE.( actually it will be A1, B5, A7, etc etc initially).
From a highly active dance, drama and singing society to exclusive
MUNing society, from the numerous NGOs and the elite car teams that
associate themselves with the college, to the thriving tech- societies
This college has it all!!! Make sure to join in the fun and bask in their
glory!!
