Technical Description

ATMOS

General
The need for a light, long range, fast moving artillery has
been recognized for many years, especially in countries, in
which terrain conditions, roads, rails and bridges put
limitations to weight and size of traditional self propelled
artillery. Artillery units are called upon to engage a variety
of targets, gapping long ranges, expecting counter battery
fire within minutes of commencing fire. This induces the
artillery to change position often and therefore causes
large drop in towed guns availability and efficiency.
Towed artillery units have difficulties performing their
missions while under fire and their ability to move and
change positions, is relatively limited. In order to challenge
this situation and at the same time to fulfil the needs of
rapid deployment units for modern artillery support, the
Autonomous Truck-Mounted Ordnance System, ATMOS has
been introduced.

Page 27

Configuration
The proposed 155mm / 52 cal ATMOS Guns are self
propelled and self-contained artillery pieces, based on a
155 mm howitzer, mounted on adapted high mobility 6x6
or 8X8 truck truck chassis such as MAN 8x8. The 155 /52
cal guns achieve ranges of up to 41,000 meters with
suitable (ERFB-BB) ammunition and suitable propelling

charge. Due to the automatic loading system, the ATMOS is

operable by a crew of 5 people.
The basic configuration of the weapon, platform and
electronic suite is described below.

Operation
Gun Laying
With an integrated electronics suite the ATMOS system is
capable of fully automatic INS based laying system. Hence,
the deployment time is dramatically shortened raising the
effectiveness of a single artillery unit.

Loading System
The ATMOS is equipped with an automatic loading system,
provided for achieving high rate of fire with a crew of five
people.

Gun Assembly
Barrel
The ATMOS is equipped with a monoblock autofrettaged 52
calibre barrel, forged from high strength steel alloy with
excellent mechanical properties.
At the muzzle, the barrel carries the muzzle-brake, which
reduces the load on the trunnions when firing.
In addition the barrel is fitted with a fume extractor which
removes the gases from the firing chamber during the
opening of the breech and ejects them from the muzzle of
the barrel. This feature prevents the post fire gases from
entering the crew area thus helping to increase the firing
rate.

Page 28

Breech Block Mechanisms

Breech

and

The Breech, of horizontal wedge sliding type, opens

automatically after firing, and ejects the spent primer.

Obturation
The gun is equipped with a metal to metal obturation. The
sealing between barrel and breech block is achieved by a
set of steel rings being pressed face to face by the gas
pressure in the chamber (during firing).

Firing Mechanism and Safety

Firing mechanism, located in the breech, is designed to
eliminate undesired firing, if the breech is not completely
closed & locked, in addition to a manual safety lever.

Automatic Breech Opener

Spring loaded mechanism is responsible for Breech opening
after firing. The spring is energized with the recoil energy
and once the recoil is complete the stored energy is used
to slide the breech all the way to the right (open position)
where it is locked.

Page 29

Cradle
The Cradle, fitted to the saddle by the trunnions, carries
the recoiling part of the gun, and facilitates the elevation
and the depression. The barrel slides inside special slidebushing bearings installed in the cradle.
The cradle mounts several key mechanisms:

Recuperator cylinder - mounted on the top.

Recoil cylinder and the elevating mechanism hinge - at

the bottom.

The trunnions - at the rear on both sides.

Equilibrators' hinges at the front on both sides.

Recoil length cut-off gear - at the lower right at the

front end.

Recoil Mechanism
The Recoil mechanism comprises the following:

Recoil buffer + replenisher - of hydraulic type

Recoil length cut-off gear of mechanical type

Recuperator - of hydro pneumatic type.

Ammunition Loading System

The ATMOS is equipped with an automatic ammunition
loading system to cater for high rate of fire with when
operated with a crew of five people.

Aiming and sighting instruments

The ATMOS is equipped with an automatic Inertial
Navigation System (INS) based sighting and Laying System
achieving 1 mil accuracy in both axes.

Mount
The mount comprises the saddle, which carries the cradle
and the gun positioning mechanisms.

Saddle
The saddle is a welded construction bolted to the main
bearing's rotating part at the bottom. The cradle is installed
on the saddle.

2013 Elbit Systems Ltd.

This document contains Elbit Systems proprietary information

Page 30

Mechanism

Elevating

The elevating mechanism serves to control vertical

movement of the gun throughout its elevation range. The
mechanism is a hydraulic piston attached to the saddle on
one side and to the bottom (front) of the cradle on the

other.

Traversing Mechanism
The traversing mechanism, mounted on the front part of
the saddle moves the gun in azimuth. The mechanism
comprises two symmetric hydraulic pistons.
When slight aiming corrections required, or in case the
main power system fails, the elevating and traversing
systems can be operated by manual hydraulic pumps.

Equilibrators
Two equilibrators, energized by compressed gas, act as a
self adjusting force, balancing the barrel and thus allowing
easy aiming in elevation, both in powered and manual
modes.

Figure 16. ATMOS (For illustration only)

2013 Elbit Systems Ltd.

This document contains Elbit Systems proprietary information

Page 31

Platform
The proposed ATMOS can be based on any 6x6 or 8x8 high
mobility tactical truck preferred by the customer.

Spades
In operation, the ATMOS rests on hydraulic spades, which
support and stabilize the vehicle while firing. Spades are
lowered when the vehicle enters firing position. After the
fire mission is fulfilled, the spades are hydraulically raised
and the vehicle is ready to move.

Hydraulic Power
Hydraulic power operates the ammunition loading system,
traverses and elevates the gun, operates the howitzer
spades and crew platform actuators, and the rear crew
platform.

Electric power
The system electric power is drawn from the truck
alternator and main batteries. A built-in energy
management system ensures that the batteries never
overcharge or deplete.
For the electronics suite, two auxiliary batteries are added
for backup and sensitive electronics operation.

The electrical installations are secured against electronic

interference in accordance with MIL-STD-461E and MILSTD-1275B.
The ATMOS electrical power system is designed to always
provide the necessary starting power for the truck engine
and to support the computation and communication
capabilities without the use of an auxiliary engine.

Crew Cabin
The crew cabin is designed for a crew of 5 persons, a
driver, commander and four (4) additional crewmembers,
their personal equipment and small arms. The cabin is
equipped with an air conditioning system, capable of both
heating and cooling.

2013 Elbit Systems Ltd.

This document contains Elbit Systems proprietary information

Page 32

A machine gun (optional) can be mounted on top of the

cabin, as a secondary defence weapon.
Since the gun fires over the cabin, the cabin structure is
reinforced to withstand the compression/blast effects of the
155mm fire. The level of protection and armour can be
supplied to conform to level 2 protection against Grenade
and Blast Mine threats (M2) and level 2 protection against
Kinetic energy threats (K2), according to STANAG 4569Ed.
1.

Crew Platform
The system is equipped with a crew platform from which
the gun is operated by its crew. The platform is designed
for convenient operation at all firing angles.

Travel Lock
During transit the barrel is secured by a travel lock located
above and behind the crew cabin.
