A partner with successful companies

MGS Manufacturing evolves to meet businesses production needs
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
MGS Manufacturing might not be household name, but the companys customers
produce products that are in almost every
household or workplace.
"The most successful companies in the
world partner with MGS Mfg. Group," the
company states on its website. "The MGS
Mfg. Group is dedicated to servicing the
plastics industry through its core competencies: engineering, design, product and
process development, tooling, injection molding, automation systems, turnkey manufacturing cells and multishot technologies. With
over 30 years of experience, MGS has
developed a reputation for providing innovative manufacturing solutions."
The company is located at W188
N11707 Maple Road. John Berg, director of
marketing for MGS, explained that the companys customers are often large brand-owning
OEMs
(Original
Equipment
Manufacturers) who need precision plastic
parts, injection molds, automation systems
and other custom equipment necessary for
their manufacturing process.
"They're the ones who come up with a
product idea. We work with them to develop
the most advantageous way to make that
product," Berg said.
Berg explained how the company manufactures components that are used in areas
such as hand held electronic devices, medical devices, automobiles, and consumer
products. Berg noted that MGS has made
parts for products ranging from violin bows
to hot tubs. MGS had $179 million in sales
in 2014 and has over 1,400 employees at
seven operations in Wisconsin, two locations
in Illinois and one location each in New
York, Mexico and Ireland.
Company founder Mark G. Sellers was
a journeyman toolmaker who served a fiveyear apprentice at a local mold maker and
then started his own business Moldmakers
Incorporated in Milwaukee. That led to
leasing space in the village of Butler before
later moving to a facility in Menomonee

Falls.
"It started as a tool shop and within the
space of the first 10 years Mark began
expanding the facility and adding more
capabilities," Berg explained. The company
added engineering and design capabilities,
bringing on employees who were accomplished mold designers and who assist customers with product design-for-manufacturer.
By the early 1990s, Moldmakers began
investing in injection molding machines to
test the molds in-house, going away from
leasing machine time at local molders. "As
our shop continued to grow and develop
increasingly sophisticated tooling systems,
our customers required more and more of
that service," Berg said.
Sellers also invested in expansion of inhouse machining processes, from additional
wet and dry surface grinders to CNC horizontal and vertical machining centers to wire
and sinker electronic discharge machining.
MGS then began developing sophisticated
automated systems combining machining
and computerized measurement with robotic
integration to speed up the process.
Within the next few years, Moldmakers
began building sophisticated, multiple material molds that were used in industries such
as telecommunications and electronics.
Berg said early customers were from a
wide variety of industries that included construction, automotive, electronic, and other
traditional industrial-style businesses. During
those years, many of the customers were
from the Germantown and Menomonee
Falls industrial parks and the Southeastern
Wisconsin area. As the company continued
to increase capabilities and capacities, that
attracted customers from the computers, high
end electronics systems and telecommunications markets. Motorola was a natural customer of Moldmakers.
By 1996, the company moved to its current location in Germantown, while still having a facility in Menomonee Falls and other
additional spaces in Germantown.
What comes from the injection molds are
products that are likely in many households
or businesses. "One or more of these prod-

ucts at some stage is going to be part of your
life - in your home as part of your electrical
and heating systems, the caps on the containers you open, in the power tool or hand
tool you use, in your automobile, in your doctors or dentists office." Berg said, as he
pointed to a table with several dozen part
samples.
Hewlett-Packard, Hospira, Honeywell,

Delphi Automotive, Abbott Laboratories and

Paslode are among the company's customers, as MGS molds parts, builds tooling
systems and creates custom machinery they
use to manufacture the millions and millions
of products they annually sell.
"Our components are relatively small.
Most everything we create you can hold in
your hand," Berg said.

I think there is no higher calling than to

be a teacher. Some mistakenly think that if
youre smart in a subject, you can teach.
While deep content knowledge helps a
good teacher be better, teaching is a complex task. Successful teachers like to work
with kids. They have an understanding of
child development and learning styles as
well as classroom management. They know
how to develop lessons for todays classrooms that offer multiple ways for students to
show their learning. From writing stories, to
putting together multi-media projects, to dramatic reenactments teachers meet kids
where they are and move them ahead to
reach academic goals.
But, its not just academics. Our teachers
also are there, alongside parents and family

members, helping children become better citizens; people who are ready to become the
doctors and medical professionals, civic and
business leaders, inventors and entrepreneurs, carpenters and welders, and yes,
teachers for tomorrow.
You cant sugar coat it. Being a teacher
in Wisconsin has been pretty tough these
past few years. Take-home pay has been cut.
The decades-old system that provided them a
voice in their work environment has been
torn apart. Too many have retired or left the
profession. Teachers have faced lots of
change and new demands on their time.
And, the political backdrop in Madison has
been exceedingly difficult. Its no wonder
research indicates that fewer high school

Froedtert makes list of top health systems

As a member of the Froedtert &
Medical College of Wisconsin health network, Community Memorial Hospital is
included on a list recognizing the top 20
medium size health systems in the nation.
The Froedtert & MCW health network is the
only Milwaukee health system to make the
list and one of just four in Wisconsin. The list
was compiled by Truven Health Analytics,
an independent firm that evaluates hospitals
and health systems.
Community Memorial, Froedtert
Hospital in Wauwatosa, and St. Josephs
Hospital in West Bend are the Froedtert &
MCW health networks three hospitals.
According to Truven, health systems on
the list generally outperformed their peers
in a variety of important measures, includ-

ing higher survival rates, fewer errors, and

lower costs.
Being recognized by this highly credible group affirms the value our health care
network brings to our patients and to our
community, said Catherine Jacobson, president and chief executive officer of
Froedtert Health.
Jacobson noted that in addition to
Froedtert & MCW, the top health systems
list includes Ministry Health Care and SSM
Health Care. All three are members of
Integrated Health Network, a clinically integrated group of major Wisconsin health
systems working to improve care.
The Truven study analyzed data from
341 health systems and their 2,812 associated hospitals to identify those that achieve

superior performance based on a composite score of nine measures of care quality,

patient perception of care, cost per episode
of illness and operational efficiency.
Truven divided the top systems into
three comparison groups based on total
operating expenses of the member hospitals. The Froedtert & MCW health network
is in the medium size health system category, which includes health systems with total
annual operating expenses in the $750 million-$1.5 billion range.
In March, Froedtert Hospital was
named to Truven Healths annual 100 Top
Hospitals list for the third consecutive year,
in the category of Major Teaching Hospital.
About the Froedtert & MCW Health
Network

The Froedtert & the Medical College of

Wisconsin regional health care network is
made up of Froedtert Hospital, Milwaukee;
Community
Memorial
Hospital,
Menomonee Falls; St. Josephs Hospital,
West Bend; and more than 25 primary and
specialty care health centers and clinics.
Joining the capabilities of an academic
medical center affiliated with the Medical
College of Wisconsin, the Froedtert & the
Medical College health network delivers
highly coordinated, cost-effective health
care to residents of southeastern Wisconsin
and beyond. The networks three hospitals
have 781 staffed beds, nearly 40,000
annual admissions and more than 900,000
annual outpatient visits. For more information, visit froedtert.com.

OFFICIAL NOTICE
TO GERMANTOWN
WATER UTILITY CUSTOMERS
The Germantown Water Utility will be performing its annual water main
flushing on April 13 through May 13, 2015. The flushing process
will be executed during the day between the hours of 9:00 AM and
3:00 PM. The water main flushing will remove most of the naturally
occurring minerals which are harmless, but at the same time may discolor the water. Should you observe Water Utility personnel working in your
neighborhood, please limit your usage of the water for 30 to 45 minutes
after the flushing has occurred, to insure the water is clear of
discoloration before it is drawn into your water system.
Should you find discoloration in your water system, please
do not wash clothes until the water has cleared.
Your help and cooperation in this program will benefit all of
the water utility customers.

During 1861 Mexico was ruled by the

president Benito Juarez. At this time the
country was passing by a very hard economic situation, 91% of federal income
was used to pay the external depth.
Therefore the president Benito Juarez
was trying to work out a financial agreement with the following countries:
England, Spain and France. Everything
went well, but the Conde Napoleon III
demanded this payment in full, with a
100% interest and also he had the intention to conquer Mexico.
At the present time France had the
most powerful and organized military.
Therefore Napoleon thought it would be
easier to conquer Mexico.
On May 5, 1862, the Mexican army

organized themselves to battle against

the French army, which was under the
leadership of General Charles Ferdinand
Latrille. The French army was defeated
by the Mexican Army. This act of bravery earned the respect of many European
countries, because the Mexican Army
was underestimated. As a result of the
battle, the French army had 476 deaths
and 520 injuries. The Mexican army had
83 deaths, 250 injuries and 12 missing
soldiers.
This is the true story behind Cinco De
Mayo, also known as La Batalla De
Puebla.

Relay for Life in Quarry

Communities area May 29
American Cancer Societys popular
fundraiser is a combined-community event
for Germantown, Lannon, Lisbon,
Menomonee Falls, Pewaukee, and Sussex
Relay for Life of Quarry Communities
(Germantown,
Lannon,
Lisbon,
Menomonee Falls, Pewaukee, and Sussex)
is still in need of teams, cancer survivors
and caregivers who want to have fun helping kick cancer to the curb May 29 from 6
p.m. to 9 a.m. (May 30) at Germantown
High School, W180 N11501 River Lane.
The more teams we have, the more
money we raise to fight cancer, said
Allison Klein, local American Cancer
Society representative. Teams are the
heart and soul of every Relay event.
Relay for Life of Quarry Communities is
a 15-hour, family-friendly fundraiser that
combines team participation in a walking
relay with music, entertainment, games,
food, a silent auction, and even camping.
Each team must have at least one walker on
the track at all times.
Teams of friends, teams of families, and
teams from area businesses, churches,
organizations, and schools solicit sponsors

and donations. Funds also are raised from

activities that occur throughout the event,
Klein said.
Because Relay For Life is such an inspirational occasion, we want as many cancer
survivors and caregivers as possible to participate, especially during the emotional
opening ceremonies when they take the celebratory first lap that kicks off the festivities, Klein said
Participants arent required to stay for
the duration of the relay, but many do.
A lot of teams set up camp around the
track and stick around for the camaraderie, Klein said. Some rest, and some
pull all-nighters and experience everything
that goes on.
Relay For Life is the American Cancer
Societys most popular and successful
fundraiser. About four million people participated in more than 6,000 Relay events
worldwide in 2014.

We want our community to be as

hope that the Free Workouts Saturdays will
show folks that exercise can be fun, said
Lisa Schmidt and Lynne McElfresh, owners

Dos and donts of kitchen remodeling

According to Remodeling magazine's
"2014 Cost vs. Value Report," a major
kitchen remodeling project should enable
homeowners to recoup 74.2 percent of
their initial investments. Kitchen renovations have long been a safe way to
improve the functionality and value of a
home. But not every kitchen project is a
guaranteed winner. Homeowners may
inadvertently make changes that end up
sticking out like a sore thumb rather than

improving the space. Take a look at these

kitchen remodeling dos and don'ts to
guide your next undertaking.
DO consider the way your kitchen will
look with the rest of the home. Keep architectural integrity in mind when designing
the space. A farmhouse sink and country
cabinets can look out of place in an ultramodern home.
DON'T overlook the importance of a
seasoned designer or architect. These
pros will know the tricks to maximizing
space and achieving the ideal layout of
appliances and may be able to recommend local contractors and vendors.
DO look beyond surface details to the
structural integrity of the design. The kitchen
should be functional, long-lasting and beautiful.
DON'T design just for today, but look
to the future as well. Unless you are willing
to spend $50,000 every five years, look
for styles and materials that will last for the
long haul. Older homeowners may want
to make adjustments now that address

potential mobility issues down the road.

DO work with what you have. A complete demolition and renovation is not
always necessary to achieve the desired
results. Only invest in major changes if
something is not working (such as having
to walk across the entire kitchen to access
the stove) or is unsafe. Otherwise, minor
upgrades may do the trick.
DON'T over-improve the space. A fully
equipped commercial kitchen may be
handy for a professional chef, but the
average person may not need an industrial hood and indoor pizza oven. When
you make excessive improvements, you
may not be able to recoup as much of the
money spent because your home will not
be on par with the values of homes in the
neighborhood. DO make sure you can
afford the project. Plan for some unexpected purchases and plan out the renovation according to your budget.
Skimping on materials or design because
of lack of money may leave you feeling
dissatisfied afterward.
