Good management
Once, there was an erudite philosopher-professor in a reputed
university. All sorts of people from various parts used to approach him
for answers on all kinds of questions on topics like the meaning of life,
life after death and so on and so forth.
When the professor got retired from the university after a long stint of
distinguished service, he returned to his native village and
settled down there. He thought he should not idle away his
time. Therefore, he decided to keep himself engaged by
doing some farming which he knew during his childhood.
Accordingly, he prepared a piece of his farmland for
cultivation. He irrigated the land, manured it and kept it
ready for sowing. The next day, he came out to the farm with
a basket full of sprouted seeds and started sowing the
seeds. As he proceeded forward, he noticed a flock of birds
from wilderness settling down and picking up the sprouted
seeds one by one and devouring it. By the time, he
completed his sowing from one end to the other end, he could see that
all the sprouted seeds were eaten away by the birds. The professor
went back home dejected by his experience as a farmer.
The next day, he came out with another basket of sprouted seeds and
began the sowing. This time, more birds landed on the field and started
feeding on the seeds leaving nothing behind. The professor went back
home thoughtful of what he should do to overcome the challenging
situation.
The third day, he came out to the field again with sprouted seeds and
began broadcasting it as usual. The birds, as can be expected, landed
in the field and completely consumed the seeds. The professor was
totally confused and mentally depressed. That night, he could not get
sleep. He kept thinking of a practical solution to the problem. Next day
morning, he went out in search of one of his childhood colleagues
who was engaged in farming, in the same village. He narrated his
experiences to the farmer colleague and sought his help. The villager
pacified him and promised all possible help.
The next day morning, the farmer friend went out
to the field with a basket full of small pebbles
appearing exactly like seeds and began sowing
them in the field. The birds came down with lot of
expectations and picked up the pebbles one by one and
found it unsuitable for consumption and left the field one
by one. The next day, again, the farmer repeated the
same operation in the field. Less number of birds came
this time and soon left the field. The third day, the same
process was repeated and none of the birds turned up.
The fourth day, in succession, the farmer friend came out with a
basket of real sprouted seeds and broadcasted it from one end
to the other end of the field. There was no attack from the birds
this time. The seeds gradually gave roots and shoots and began
to grow.
Practical wisdom is more important in managing situations whether
it is in agriculture, industry or in business management. Good
management requires good common sense.
