Parts of All of Us
Two of the characters named Sniff and Scurry are mice. They represent parts of us that are simple
and instinctive. Hem and Haw are the little people, representing those complex parts of us as
human beings. Sometimes we are like Sniff, who anticipates change early by sniffing it out, or
Scurry, who quickly scurries into action and adapts. Maybe we are more like Hem, who denies

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

gaan met zijn leven. Het leven van Christopher is namelijk al ingewikkeld
omdat hij autisme heeft. Hierdoor kan hij moeilijk contact leggen met
anderen, wordt hij agressief als hij aangeraakt wordt en vindt hij het moeilijk
om contact te houden met mensen. Daarentegen is hij wel weer hoogbegaafd
in wiskunde en wil hij op vijftienjarige leeftijd al het wiskunde examen op
VWO-niveau af gaan leggen.
In de straat is er echter iets vreemds gebeurd. Als Christopher s avonds over
straat loopt komt hij erachter dat de hond van mevrouw Shears, een vrouw
die in zijn straat woont, overleden is. Hij ligt op straat met een mes in zijn
lichaam. Onmiddellijk gaat Christopher naar de hond toe om hem te proberen
te verzorgen. Dit lukt alleen niet en mevrouw Shears heeft inmiddels de
politie ingelicht. De politie komt gelijk naar mevrouw Shears toe en vermoedt
dat Christopher de hond vermoord heeft. Hierdoor wordt hij meegenomen
naar het politiebureau waar hij verder verhoord moet worden.
Als Christopher in de cel zit, hoort hij ineens de stem van zijn vader. De vader
van Christopher komt hem halen omdat hij denkt dat Christopher onschuldig
is. Na allerlei gesprekken wordt hij uiteindelijk vrijgelaten. Maar wel met de
mededeling dat ze hem in de gaten gaan houden.
Omdat de dood van de hond van mevrouw Shears zoveel indruk gemaakt
heeft op Christopher, is hij vastberaden om de moordenaar te vinden. Beetje
bij beetje gaat hij de hele straat af om te vragen of zij wat met de dood van
de hond te maken hebben. Christopher komt helemaal niks verder, maar
omdat hij het zo een spannend onderzoek vindt besluit hij om toch door te
gaan.
Tegelijkertijd is Christopher bezig met het schrijven van een boek. Zijn boek
gaat over de zoektocht naar de moord op de hond en over zijn autisme.
Regelmatig praat hij met zijn vader hierover, die hem aanmoedigt om door te
gaan met het schrijven van het boek. Uiteindelijk vindt Christopher op een
dag, als zijn vader aan het werk is, schrikbarende brieven in de kast. Deze
brieven zijn namelijk geschreven door zijn eigen moeder.
De vader van Christopher heeft tegen Christopher gezegd dat zijn moeder
gestorven is aan een hartaanval. Nu Christopher deze brieven leest en leest
dat zijn moeder hem wil zien, weet hij dat zijn moeder nog in leven is. s
Avonds besluit hij om verhaal te gaan halen bij zijn vader, want nu hij weet
dat zijn moeder nog in leven is wil hij haar natuurlijk zien.

Uiteindelijk geeft de vader van Christopher toe dat hij gelogen heeft. De
moeder van Christopher scheen vreemd te gaan met meneer Schears en ze
zijn dan ook samen verhuisd naar Londen. De vader van Christopher vond dit
zo verschrikkelijk dat hij maar tegen zijn zoon gezegd heeft dat ze overleden
is. Daarna biecht hij nog iets op: hij heeft de hond van mevrouw Shears
doodgemaakt.
Dit nieuws is schokkend voor Christopher. Hij vertrouwt zijn vader niet meer
en besluit stiekem per trein naar zijn moeder in Londen te reizen. De
ontmoeting tussen hem en zijn moeder is emotioneel en meneer Shears, de
nieuwe man van de moeder van Christopher, heeft liever niet dat Christopher
daar in huis gaat wonen. Toch kiest de moeder van Christopher voor haar
