failuresbeforetheyhappenandcorrectthecausesoffailureswhichhavehappenedandperiodically
reviewingperformancewithaviewtoupdatinggoalsandobjectivesandamendingthemanagement
systeminordertomeetthem.

AuditablestandardssuchasISO9001:2008areprescriptive,thatistheyprescribecertainstandardsthat
mustbemetinordertocomplywiththestandardandallowcertification.Theseprescribedstandards
includedocumentingprocessesandproceduresandmaintainingrecordstodemonstratethecorrect
operationofthesystem,includingauditfindings,investigationsintofailuresofthesystem,corrective
andpreventiveactions,andevidenceofcompetenceofemployeestocarryouttheirtasks.
Havingprescriptivestandardsallowsthesystemtobeauditedeffectivelybothinternallybypeople
familiarwiththesystemandexternallybypeoplewhoarenotfamiliarwiththespecificsofthesystem
butexperiencedintherequirementsofthestandard.
Thismodelofstandardhasbeenadaptedandextendedtoprovideauditablemanagementsystem
standardsforvariousotherareasofbusinessincludingenvironmentalmanagement(ISO14001)and
health&safetymanagement(OHSAS18001).
