NORTHAMPTON, MASS. On Saturday, May 9, 2015 the City of
Northampton, Massachusetts will hold a ceremony to celebrate the restoration of the Knowledge Corridor rail line and the return of Amtrak service to our city. The ceremony will begin at 3:45 p.m., coinciding with the scheduled arrival of the northbound Vermonter train, and will be held at the new Northampton Station platform (off of Pleasant Street) next to the historic Union Station, now renovated as banquet, restaurant, and special event facility. Northampton Mayor David J. Narkewicz will read a proclamation declaring Northampton Train Day and the current owners of the Union Station building will offer a tour of the historic station building. More details about the ceremony and future Northampton train events to follow. The local celebration is part of the national Amtrak Train Days in which hundreds of communities throughout the country will be holding multiple events from now until November highlighting this years Amtrak theme Trains Matter. For example, according to the United States Department of Energy, rail contributes less per passenger mile to greenhouse gas emissions than either cars or airplanes. ###
