Fauquier County 4-H Show & Sale
History of the Fauquier County Show and Sale

In 1960, Mr. Donald Allen, Mr. Jack Kinzer, and Mr. Henry Sanders decided to promote
agriculture with the youth in the area. After talking with the Virginia Cooperative Extension
personnel, it was decided they would sponsor a beef show. In the beginning the Show and Sale
program was held at the Fauquier Livestock Exchange on Old Stockyard Road in Marshall, VA.
As agriculture interests were growing among the youth, sheep and hogs were added shortly
thereafter. Goats were just added to the Show and Sale in 2013.

In 1962, when the Fauquier Livestock Exchange was moved to its new location on the
corner of Rt 55 and Zulla Road, the Show and Sale program moved right along with it. After the
tragic fire in September 2010, the Show and Sale moved to the Fauquier County Fairgrounds
where it is held today.

In 1999, Mr. Howard Grove of Highwater Farm in Bealeton, VA donated the first animal
for the scholarship program. Raffle tickets were sold, and the winner received a steer, and the
monies collected were the beginning of the Fauquier County 4-H Livestock Scholarship
Program. Starting in 2000, it became known as the Scholarship Hog. For many years the Grove
family donated and raised a hog for the scholarship program. Over the last few years, a
graduating senior has taken on the responsibility of donating and raising a hog. The idea
behind this program was to provide the graduating youth of the Fauquier County Show and Sale
monies to continue their education beyond 4-H. For the past fourteen years, this program has
been alive and well helping many graduating youth. When Ms. Susan P. Rucker passed away in
2006, the scholarship was renamed the Susan P. Rucker Scholarship to honor the service she
had given to the youth of the Show and Sale. Ms. Rucker had served as a Show and Sale
Manager for over ten years providing tremendous support to the youth in 4-H. Today, the
scholarship hog proceeds benefit all graduating youth of the Fauquier County 4-H Show and
Sale program who have been active for the past three consecutive years.

Fauquier County 4-H Show and Sale is one of the oldest Show and Sale events in the
state of Virginia. Many of the 4-H participating today are multi-generation participants. What
the founding fathers started over 55 years ago has been and will be greatly appreciated by past,
present, and future exhibitors.

Dear Parents and Supporters,
Its my pleasure to welcome you to the 56th annual Fauquier County 4-H Show and Sale.
I would like to personally thank all of you for supporting myself and my fellow 4-Hers as we end
another great year of hard work and dedication to our projects. I would also like to give a big
thanks to the Fauquier County Fair for letting us use their facilities and working with us as we
plan this event. I know each 4-H member has dedicated many hours of work and sweat into these
quality market animals, but we all know we would not be where we are without our parents.
Without the support from family we would not be able to accomplish what you see today.
As the chairman of the Fauquier County Show and Sale I have finally seen really what it
takes to put this event on. At this time I would like to introduce the 2014-2015 Show and Sale
Committee, Vice Chairman Miranda Payne, Secretary Kenny Linton, Kyla Kunkel and Marissa
Kunkel. As well I would like to introduce to you our advisors that guided us through our
planning; Extension Agents Tim Mize and Lenah Nguyen, Andy Butler, and Kraig Smith. I want
to thank you each for making this another successful year, along with thanking our 4-H leaders
that helped us at meetings by giving us advice to raise these healthy market animals.
This program has taught me many life skills that I will use as I build my future. Being in
4-H for the past years, I have taken away numerous lessons and skills that have helped shaped
me into the person I am today. I have learned how to keep records, manage my finances, and
most importantly communicate with my fellow 4-Hers and supporters. As I leave this barn
tonight as a graduating senior, I will cherish all the fun times I have had spending working with
my steers and hogs, but I believe that I will miss being with my friends the most.
Thank you all again for your never ending support that you have given to me and my
fellow friends. On behalf of the Fauquier County Show and Sale we can say that we have yet
again put another great year in the books.

Best All-Around Beef Contest

The Best All-Around Beef Contest identifies the market beef project that best represents the
overall goals of the cattle industry. This contest combines carcass scores, live evaluation, and
performance (average daily gain and weight per day of age). Carcass evaluation counts 50% and
the combined average score for the performance and live evaluation will count 50%.

Nancy Colwell Memorial Rate of Gain Contest
Nancy Colwell was a 4-H Leader who started the Rate of Gain Contest in the 1980s. She felt
that it was important for the youth to learn how much their steers were gaining and how much
they were feeding their animals. Nancy passed away in the fall of 1993. It is only fitting to
continue this contest in her memory since she felt it was an important part of the learning
process of raising animals.

Special Awards

Handled by Extension Animal Scientist at Virginia Tech

Virginia Pork Industry Association will award a silver tray to the sweepstakes winner in the
junior market hog shows. The winner is to be selected by the total number of points
accumulated in the show for placing in the single classes, pen classes, and fitting/showing
classes by the following point system: 1st = 5 points, 2nd = 4 points, 3rd = 3 points. In case of a
tie, the tying exhibitor placing highest in the fitting and showing class will receive the award.
