...as Wheels & Wings Airshow hosts

the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds Flight
Demonstration team.
he Millville Army Air Field Museum (MAAFM), in conjunction with David Schultz Airshows, LLC, will host
the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds Flight Demonstration
Team at the 2015 Wheels & Wings Millville Airshow this
Saturday and Sunday, May 9 and 10, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Millville, New Jersey, is one of just two sites in the midAtlantic area where the Thunderbirds will perform in 2015.
The USAF Thunderbirds consist of six air combat F-16
Fighting Falcon jets, flown by Americas finest pilots, and are
coming to the Millville Airshow from their headquarters at
Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. They delight audiences with
their gravity-defying loops and rolls performed in tight formation at hundreds of miles per hour! The flying unit, officially
known as the U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, performed its first public flyover of 2015 at the opening of Super
Bowl XLIX in Phoenix, Arizona, on February 1.
The USAF Thunderbirds, who performed at Millville
Airport in 2004 and earlier in 2002, will return to headline
an extensive display of performers including military aircraft, historic warbirds, and exciting aerobatic performances.
The Museum is honored to have been chosen to host
the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds at Millville Airport, one of
just 35 performance sites nationwide and the only location
in the New Jersey, Pennsylvania or Delaware region in
2015, said Chuck Wyble, MAAFM president. .
Millville Airport has the unique history of being
Americas First Defense Airport, continued Wyble, and
through the dedicated efforts of a volunteer committee
headed up by Lisa Jester, airshow director, along with many
community-minded individuals, the Millville Airshow has
grown to achieve the highest status of military recognition in
the country by being chosen as a jet team show site.
It is a great honor to welcome the US Air Force
Thunderbirds back to the City of Millville, said Mayor
Michael Santiago. The Thunderbird pilots in their F-16 jets

Seven ribbon cuttings celebrated

last Thursday. { BY RUSSELL SWANSON }
ibbon-cuttings are a vital part in the life of a
vibrant downtown. The opening of a new
business is like a new member of a family. A
ribbon-cutting welcomes that member to the family.
Its a celebration of a downtowns success and
ongoing vibrancy, as well as a strong show of support for that business by the City officials and the
community at large.
We, in Main Street Vineland, made it a policy over
the years to not miss a beat in welcoming each new
business with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Businesses
have been opening fast and furious, however, and we
had to play catch-up to keep up with them. So, we
celebrated our successes with seven ribbon-cuttings last Thursdayobvious proof that downtown
Vineland is alive and well and open for business.
We started at 11 a.m. at Michelles Kitchen and
Catering Service at 632 E. Landis Avenue (pictured
above). We then crossed the street for five ribboncuttings in Landis MarketPlace, at 631 E. Landis
Avenue. We started downstairs with Stoltzfus BBQ &
Poultry and SunRise Bakery, and then moved upstairs
for Jazzy Original Designs, Vibrante Hair And Beauty,
and Stuff-ums. Moving back outside, we proceeded to

BUSINESSES
(Continued from cover)
D and Grant Plaza, 619 E. Landis Ave.
Joining us for the celebrations were
Mayor Ruben Bermudez and his wife,
Vineland Economic Development Director
Sandy Forosisky, Greater Vineland Chamber
of Commerce Executive Director Dawn
Hunter, Main Street Vineland Board of
Directors Chairperson Louise Bertacchi and
Economic Restructuring Team Chairperson
Jane Jannarone, Landis MarketPlace
Manager Robert Scarpa, and others. Of
course, friends, relatives, and other supporters of the business owners also were on hand
for the ceremony and the photos. I want to
thank all of them for their participation.
I wanted this to make a strong statement
about the vibrancy of our downtownbusiness owners who believe in our downtown
and who help to make up the tremendous
variety of businesses we have. Well certainly
have more ribbon-cuttings coming up and
youll be reading about them.
The ribbon-cuttings, however, are only
the beginning. Make sure to patronize these
businesses. Let them know that youre glad
theyre there to serve you. We want to not
only celebrate grand openings but business
anniversaries as well, and your support is the
way to make that happen.
I want to thank everyone who helped out
at Spring Clean-Up and Planting Days over

the last two Saturdays. We had a nice contingency from the Police Athletic Leagues Girls
in Action group to clean and to plant, as well
as from Vineland High Schools SHAPE Club
on Planting Day. This was in addition to a
strong group of volunteers who contributed
to making our downtown look nice. This also
is a beginning. Were joining in an Adopt-aBlock program and plan to be out the third
Saturday of each month focusing in on areas
throughout our downtown. Were always
looking for additional volunteers and groups
to help out. The more we have, the more we
can do to help instill Vineland Pride! If
youre interested, call or e-mail me.
I also want to thank all those who helped
to make our Cinco de Mayo Multicultural
Festival last Sunday a success. It wouldnt have
happened without the hard work and steadfast
support of event organizers Jos Martinez of
Las Lomas Fresh Mexican Grille in Landis
MarketPlace and designer Jerry Lukas. I also
want to thank the major sponsorsMain
Pharmacy and radio sponsor WMVB 1440
AM-La Brava. Of course, I want to thank the
other sponsors, vendors, and volunteers who
helped make the day so fun. Just as important,
however, I want to thank everyone who came
out to enjoy it. You turned it from an event on
a piece of paper to a fun happening. I

Proud to Call
You Mom

Happy Mother's Day

to our mom, Anna
Corrado Magazzu
Trapani!
You have been a wonderful role model to
your two children and
your five grandchildren.
Your love for your family
is expressed in numerous ways, and we appreciate the sacrifices you have made
through the years. So many Italian family dinners you have cooked for us for
decades, encouraging togetherness and
family values which you hope to pass
on. Although you still wish to do everything exactly as you did when you were
a young wife, we are also happy that
you now give in to our wishes to celebrate some family holidays on us.
Your grandchildren express amazement at your continued high energy
level and zest for life.
Of course, they were not here 40
years ago when you faced deadly illness
in the face, and triumphed in the end.
You then spent decades volunteering

your time and energy organizing large fundraising events

for the local chapter of the
American Cancer Society, in
addition to also visiting
many cancer-stricken
patients in your "Reach to
Recovery" program, which
you helped create, to offer
them encouragement against
tough odds, and sadly only
some of them survived.
A highlight of my life was
accompanying you and Dad
on several trips to see our
cousins in Italy, on both sides of the
family, and watch you enjoy their kind
hospitality, watching you pitch in even
while a guest, and witnessing your
enjoyment of hearing the Italian conversation and merriment which prompted
many invitations for return visits.
Outside of your family, you also have
an extended family of friends. Some of
them who are younger consider themselves to be like an honorary daughter
or son. We are all proud to call you
"Mom."
Love, your son, Michael

Dear Nana,
YOU ROCK! We all love you and appreciate
you.
Love,

MOTHERS DAY: SUNDAY, MAY 10

Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient
Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in
honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and
Cybele, but the clearest modern precedent
for Mothers Day is the early Christian festival known as Mothering Sunday. Once a
major tradition in the United Kingdom and
parts of Europe, this celebration fell on the
fourth Sunday in Lent and was originally
seen as a time when the faithful would
return to their mother churchthe main
church in the vicinity of their homefor a
special service. Over time the Mothering
Sunday tradition shifted into a more secular holiday, and children would present

tokens of appreciation. This custom eventually faded in popularity before merging
with the American Mothers Day in the
1930s and 1940s.
The roots of the modern American
Mothers Day date back to the 19th century.
In the years before the Civil War (1861-65),
Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia helped
start Mothers Day Work Clubs to teach
local women how to properly care for their
children. These clubs later became a unifying force in a region of the country still
divided over the Civil War. In 1868, Jarvis
organized Mothers Friendship Day, at
which mothers gathered with former
Union and Confederate soldiers to promote
reconciliation.
Another precursor to Mothers Day
came from the abolitionist and suffragette
Julia Ward Howe. In 1870 Howe wrote the
Mothers Day Proclamation, a call to
action that asked mothers to unite in promoting world peace. In 1873 Howe campaigned for a Mothers Peace Day to be

Jarvis conceived of Mothers Day as a way

of honoring the sacrifices mothers made
for their children. After gaining financial
backing from a Philadelphia department
store owner named John Wanamaker, in
May 1908 she organized the first official
Mothers Day celebration at a Methodist
church in Grafton, West Virginia. That
same day also saw thousands of people
attend a Mothers Day event at one of
Wanamakers retail stores in Philadelphia.
Following the success of her first
Mothers Day, Jarviswho remained
unmarried and childless her whole life
resolved to see her holiday added to the
national calendar. Arguing that American
holidays were biased toward male achievements, she started a massive letter writing
campaign to newspapers and prominent
politicians urging the adoption of a special
day honoring motherhood. By 1912 many
states, towns and churches had adopted
Mothers Day as an annual holiday, and
Jarvis had established the Mothers Day
International Association to help promote
her cause. Her persistence paid off in 1914
when President Woodrow Wilson signed a
measure officially establishing the second
Sunday in May as Mothers Day.

Anna Jarvis had originally conceived of

Mothers Day as a day of personal celebration between mothers and families. Her
version of the day involved wearing a white
carnation as a badge and visiting ones
mother or attending church services. But
once Mothers Day became a national holiday, it was not long before florists, card
companies and other merchants capitalized on its popularity.
While Jarvis had initially worked with
the floral industry to help raise Mothers
Days profile, by 1920 she had become disgusted with how the holiday had been
commercialized. She outwardly denounced
the transformation and urged people to
stop buying Mothers Day flowers, cards
and candies. Jarvis eventually resorted to
an open campaign against Mothers Day
profiteers, speaking out against confectioners, florists and even charities. She also
launched countless lawsuits against groups
that had used the name Mothers Day,
eventually spending most of her personal
wealth in legal fees. By the time of her
death in 1948 Jarvis had disowned the holiday altogether, and even actively lobbied
the government to see it removed from the
American calendar. I

There you are with your May Day flowers!
I made a May Day basket for you so many years
ago in school, placed it at the front door, then rang
the doorbell and hid until you opened the door to
your surprise.
Im so glad I am still making May Day bouquets
for you, as we just celebrated your 91st birthday on

You are an example to me every day as I raise
your three grandkids. Happy Mothers Day!

he 172 Vineland women who

cast votes in the 1868 presidential election werent immediate
heroes in the eyes of their fellow residents. But their actions that
November 3, two months after activists
Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady
Stanton visited here, have since become
legendary.
Elizabeth A. Kingsburys account of
that day offers us the best view of the
event. After she and John and Portia Gage
arrived at the election hall, they were surprised by the lack of animosity. As time
passed, Kingsbury notes, there came
more men and women into the hall. Quite
a number of the latter presented their
notes at the table where those of men
were received, where they were rejected
with politeness, and then taken to the
other side of the platform and deposited
in our box. Shall I describe this box,
twelve inches long and six wide, and originally a grape-box? Very significant of
Vineland.
Soon there came to the aid of Mrs.
Gage and myself a blooming and beautiful
young lady, Estelle Thomson, who, with
much grace and dignity, sat there
throughout the day, recording the names
of the voters. It would have done you
good to have witnessed the scene.
Margaret Pryorsat there in her nice
Quaker bonnet by the side of Miss
Thomson a great part of the day.
While the womens votes in Vineland
that day werent included in the final
count, the results indicate that Grant
received 164 votes, his Democratic opponent, Horatio Seymour, received only 4
votes, Elizabeth Cady Stanton 2 votes,
and candidates identified as Fremont and
Mrs. Governor Harvey of Wisconsin 1
vote apiece.
Anthony acknowledged the event in a
letter 10 days later: Vineland women did
splendidly on Election Day and will no
doubt continue to do the same.
The female vote in Vineland was mirrored in North Jersey that fall by Lucy
Stone, another leader of the American
Equal Rights Association who had
appeared in Vineland the previous year.
The November 12 edition of The
Revolution reported that, according to the
Newark Daily Advertiser, Mrs. Hannah

Blackwell, a highly esteemed elderly lady,

long resident in Roseville, and Mrs. Lucy
Stone, her daughter-in-law, both of them
property-holders and tax-payers in the
county, appeared at the polls in Roseville
Park and offered their votes.
The judges of election were divided
as to the propriety of receiving the votes
of the ladies, one of them stating that he
was in favor of doing so, the two others
objecting on the ground of the illegality.
The ladies stated that they had taken
advice of eminent lawyers, and were satisfied that in New Jersey, women were
legally entitled to vote, from the fact that
the old constitution of the State conferred suffrage upon all inhabitants
worth $250. Under that constitution
women did in fact vote until, in 1807, by
an arbitrary act of the legislature, women
were excluded from the polls. The new
constitution, adopted in 1844, was
framed by a convention and adopted by a
constituency, from both of which women
were unconstitutionally excluded, so that
they have never been allowed to vote
upon the question of their own disfranchisement.
Its possible the true inspiration
behind so many New Jersey women voting in November 1868 lies in an incident
that occurred in Vineland earlier that
year. When a temperance vote was placed
before residents in the spring, the
Vineland Weekly reported that the election
had included the appearance of a woman
at the polls. Having provided herself with
a ballot, she marched up to the rostrum
and tendered it to the chairman of the
board of registry. The veteran politician,
John Kandle, covered with blushes, was
obliged to inform the lady that no one
could vote unless his name was registered. She acquiesced in the decision very
readily, saying she only wished to test a
principle, and retired very quietly from
the hall. According to The Elizabeth
Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony
Papers Project at Rutgers University, the
sole Vineland woman attempting to cast a
vote on March 1, 1868 was Portia Gage.
Gage wrote that it wasnt until an 1873
election that our claim to vote seemed to
most of the voters to be a just one. I

force, the flux, karma, kismet or whatever

you choose to call it had me just a little
unsettled.
I kind of knew that something wasnt
just exactly right in my little world.
And that turned out to be a good thing
because I wasnt caught completely off
guard by the results of my check-up.
Let me make one thing perfectly clear:
The scariest thing you can hear isnt that
you have cancer, its that your cancer has
returned.
I have since had surgery and am in treatment once again. Hopefully it wont interfere with my writing.
But the real point is: Listen to what the
world is telling you.
Know the warning signs and have the
check-ups you are supposed to have.
Remember, were all in this together and
I really would miss having you as a reader.

Some quick thoughts on whats going on

in the world and Vineland.
I see Vinelands City Council has figured out a way to dodge the mayor and
proceed with Phase 2 of its plan to renovate
the southeast corner of East and Landis
(catty-corner from Phase 1The Landis
Theater) with senior citizen housing.
Forget the fact that Phase 1 was a failure
for a second (as the council members
apparently did) and ask yourself: Would I
put my parent(s) in that location?
If your answer is yes, then shame on
you.
There has been a certain inevitability
to the unrest and civil disorder that is popping up all around the country.
Nobody condones the police brutality
that seems to spark these incidents, but for
there to be order there has to be law.
In every single one of these instances,
the whole thing could have been avoided if
the victims had simply complied with the
instructions given to them by the police.
Things could have been sorted out and
complaints filed later.
I certainly dont believe every cop is a
good person and a hero but they do have a
very, very stressful job. I

f youre wondering why I havent

had a column in a while, its simply
because Ive had other, more pressing concerns.
May the force be with you.
Whatever you call it: the force, karma,
kismet, the flux or coincidence; it all pretty
much adds up to the same thing.
Its that unseen thread that seems to tie
everything together in ways that defy
description and strain understanding.
Sometimes its as simple as a Jeopardy
answer that sticks in your mind and then
pops up again during a television show
three hours later.
Coincidence?
Sometimes its a little harder to simply
dismiss as coincidence. For instance: I was
doing the Sunday crossword and one of the
questions was Who posed the riddle,
What do a desk and a raven have in common?
I didnt have a clue, but eventually figured it out by filling in some of the other
blanks: The Mad Hatter from Alice in
Wonderland.
Much later that same day I was reading
a new author, John Fowler (an Englishman
who writes a detective series about odd
crimes) and came across the exact same
question.
Coincidence?
The day before I was listening to Pearl
Giordanos radio show and she mentioned
visiting a mutual friend who had moved
away years ago and whom I hadnt thought
of in years.
That evening that same person was sitting at my table at a parish dinner dance.
Coincidence?
Point is, stuff like that happens all the
time to just about everybody and, while it
doesnt have any cosmic significance, it
should serve as a constant reminder that
we are all in this together.
The weekend those aforementioned
incidents occurred was just prior to my
quarterly doctors appointment.
Id been in treatment for close to two
years but, as I said, hadnt had any symptoms for almost a year.
He was, I had been fairly certain, going
to tell me my cancer had been in remission
for one year.
But that weekends brushes with the

Career Fair Reaches 3,000

CHAMBER EVENTS
Registration required for all GVCC
meetings/events. Call 691-7400.

GVCC hosted the April 24 event at Vineland High; Rental Country sponsored.

pproximately 3,000 Vineland

High School students gained
valuable knowledge about
employment opportunities in the greater
Vineland area at an all-day Career Day
on April 24.
According to Cindy Veale, District
School-to-Career/Transition Coordinator,
the event allowed students to learn
about many of the industries, educational facilities, employment opportunities
and general career paths our community
can provide.
The Greater Vineland Chamber of
Commerce served as host for the event
with Rental Country as sponsor.
The Chamber and 25 community part-

ners participated in the event, managing

tables and relaying information to
engaged and interested students. Among
those in attendance were: the American
Cancer Society, ARC International, Army,
Bennigan's Restaurant, Chemglass Life
Sciences, Comcast, Cumberland County
College, Cumberland County Technical
Education Center, Cumberland County
One Stop Center, Family Medical
Equipment, Gallagher Bollinger
Insurance, Inspira Health Network,
Mariano Agency, Merrill Lynch,
Newfield National Bank, SNJ Today, Sun
Bank, TD Bank, Thomas Heist Insurance,
Vineland Fire Department, Vineland
Ministerium, Vineland Municipal
Utilities, Vineland Police Department
and the YMCA.
An important part of the GVCC
strategic plan is to strengthen our community partnerships, said Dawn
Hunter, Executive Director of the GVCC.
This is a wonderful example of how
these partnerships can work, and what
we can accomplish together to help our
students and future workforce.
It was also a first for the students
who participate in the Life Skills Caf,

he April GVCC
luncheon was held
on Thursday, April
16, at Hampton Inn. The
topic of discussion was
A Healthier Vineland,
with guest speakers from
the YMCA of Vineland and
City of Vineland Health
Department.

as they catered their first-ever event.

The life skills program teaches schoolto-work skills by having the students
actually deal with real customers, real
money and real on-the-job scenarios.
The students catering the event showcased their talents in food preparation
and arrangement.
The GVCC was extremely proud to
partner with the Vineland Public School
System in hosting this Career Day, said
Hunter. It's very important to make
students aware of local businesses and
organizations and do whatever we can
to help them because they are our future
workforce and adult citizens of this
community.

David Calderetti, of
the YMCA (pictured
right), described how
Cumberland County
ranks poorly on lists
having to do with
health and well being,
and that Vineland is
home to almost 40
percent of all residents
of the county. Emma Lopez from the Health Department
(pictured left), gave background on funding and initiatives that have allowed the two organizations to partner
for the benefit of Vineland residents.

Inspira Earns ACR Lung

Cancer Screening Center
Designation
Inspira Medical Center Vineland was
recently designated a Lung Cancer
Screening Center by the American College
of Radiology (ACR). The ACR Lung
Cancer Screening Center designation is a
voluntary program that recognizes facilities that have committed to practice safe,
effective diagnostic care for individuals
at the highest risk for lung cancer.
We are very proud to be recognized
by the American College of Radiology
with this prestigious designation, said
Michelle Marshall, assistant vice president of Oncology and Womens Services
at Inspira. Our network offers community members coordinated lung cancer
screenings at our medical centers in
Vineland and Woodbury. We also provide the community with access to certified tobacco treatment counselors who
are available to help people quit smoking once and for all.
In order to receive this elite distinction, facilities must be accredited by the
ACR in computed tomography (CT) in
the chest module, as well as undergo a
rigorous assessment of its lung cancer
screening protocol and infrastructure.
Also required are procedures in place for
follow-up patient care, such as counseling and smoking cessation programs.
Lung cancer screening with low-dose
CT scans, and appropriate follow-up
care, has been proven to significantly
reduce deaths caused by lung cancer.
Lung cancer is the nations leading cancer killertaking the lives of more people each year than breast, colon and
prostate cancers combined.
Inspira Health Networks lung cancer
screening program in Vineland and
Woodbury is recognized as a Lung
Cancer Screening Center of Excellence by
the Lung Cancer Alliance. Community
members who are interested in lung cancer screening, whether it is for them or
for a loved one, are encouraged to contact Sandra Murray at (856) 641-8670.

GREEN CORNER
Featuring Our Green Members!
This month: DAN AYARS LANDSCAPING, LLC
Landscaping is green.
Installation of trees, shrubs, and flowers contribute to the overall health of the environment, personal health and wellness, and help
to beautify our surroundings.
Consider installing a beautiful, decorative,
self-sustaining, ecosystem, fish pond or
waterfall in your yard.
We can help customers with drainage issues
to reduce runoff and erosion which is a major
pollution factor.
Pest problems plague many homeowners. Using either an Integrated Pest
Management (IPM) and/or organic
plan of attack, weeds, insects, and
disease problems can be controlled
or eliminated with minimal environmental impact.
LED technology has provided an
excellent alternative to power-hungry landscape lighting fixtures.
Lights provide beauty and security to
any property and can be done with
minimal power usage.
There are numerous permeable (allows
water to penetrate) options available for driveways, patios, sidewalks, pool
decks, etc. These allow water to penetrate deep into the ground rather than
running off and causing problems.
Rain barrels and other water collection systems are available to collect
rainwater and store rainwater for later use in irrigation, water features, or as
gray water in the household (flushing toilets, etc).
There are several fake grass options available that look virtually identical to
real turf with almost zero maintenance and no water or fertilizer.

TESTIMONIAL OF THE MONTH

I have been a member of the Chamber through various
businesses for over 20 years. The membership luncheons are
always well planned and informative and offer a great way to
stay connected to the local business community. The Meet n
Greets offer a wonderful networking opportunity in a relaxed,
informal setting and the results from advertising in News and
Views have been impressive. I would highly recommend
Chamber membership to any new business coming to the area
as well as to the already established businesses that have
not yet committed. Remember, Think globally, but act locally.
