Planting Reimbursement
Reimbursements will be processed on a first come first served basis, dependant upon when approved
“paid” receipts are received by the City Engineer’s office, until budgeted funds are expended for the
calendar year. Reimbursement requests must be in the City Engineer’s office no later than forty five days
from the date of planting. Reimbursement will be made for up to 3/4 (three quarters) of the purchase price
of the tree, up to a maximum of $75 (seventy five dollars) per tree. The cost may include planting expenses
charged by the seller. Reimbursement will be made for no more than three boulevard trees per property
owner per calendar year unless the property has multiple street frontage (such as a corner lot), in which case
the limit of reimbursement is for six boulevard trees per calendar year.
Program Requirements:
Obtain a permit from the City Engineer’s office, located at 100 North Broadway to remove any tree
from the boulevard. All guidelines and rules contained in the “City of New Ulm Boulevard, Tree and
Shrub Policy” must be adhered to. Minimum tree size eligible for reimbursement is eight (8) feet tall.
Larger trees are encouraged. Reimbursement requests must be accompanied by the paid original bill of sale
from a MN State Department of Agriculture licensed supplier or nursery specifying: (a) number of trees
purchased, (b) tree species, (c) cost per tree, (d) size of trees. Additionally, a written one (1) year growing
guarantee must be secured from the supplier or nursery for each tree and submitted with the reimbursement
request.
Only deciduous trees are to be planted on boulevards. To be eligible for reimbursement, trees must be on the
list of approved species in the current “City of New Ulm Boulevard, Tree and Shrub Policy”. Low
growing or multi-trunk varieties of deciduous trees, or any species of fir or pine do not qualify for
reimbursement.
Tree locations – only trees planted within the public right-of-way qualify for City reimbursement; in the
absence of sidewalks, trees cannot be planted in locations reserved for future sidewalks. It is the
responsibility of the property owner to properly care for and maintain boulevard trees.
Claims are normally considered by the City Council at the first meeting of each month. Claims must be submitted at
least six working days prior to this meeting or the claims will be considered the following month.
