Transformative

Things which characterize TQM in the classroom..

The Student as Co-Manager of the teaching/learning process

Faculty & students should discuss mutual objectives.

teacher should review and develop class consensus on the knowledge, know-how, wisdom
and character traits, expected to be developed

Important tasks of a teacher is to provide a basis for internal motivation towards a

subject.(SCANS report).

The USe of Internal Motivators Rather than External MotivatorsSome examples of unhealthy external motivators
a) Competitions for prizes
b) Grading students "on the curve".
c) Threats regarding poor performance.

d) Special honors for good performance.

e) Segregation of students into different classes by "ability"

f) Criticism without appreciation of accomplishment.
The cooperative spirit can be quickly destroyed if the students are set to competing for
grades.

A powerful stimulant to internal motivation is to be part of a team in which each

member of the team relies on the output of the other team members

Primarily uses quality tools to improve student

instruction, many also find value in applying the
tools to behavioral issues.

long-running issue of school bullies

bullies making recess miserable for classmates

have addressed this topic using the plan, do,

study, act (PDSA) cycle

How they used quality tools:

Creating an affinity diagram to analyze the situation

Post-it notes to rank order concerns

quick look at the number of Post-its attached to each area of concern

spot the main issues associated with bullying

create fishbone diagrams around various stakeholder groups, such as

bullies, students who are bullied, and playground supervisors.

create action plans with interventions to address the behavioral problems

bringing in a social worker who guided the students through various roleplaying activities aimed at reducing the bullying behavior.
