Eastern touts 50 years of Excellence in Education

High school hosts
semicentennial
celebration May 6
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
A little more than 50 years ago,
the land where Eastern Regional
High School now stands was 50
acres of oak and laurel trees.
The students of Voorhees,
Gibbsboro and Berlin townships
traveled to Overbrook, Edgewood,
Haddonfield or Collingswood to
go to high school, and the students and their parents were not
pleased.
Then things started to change.
In 1963, the county appointed a
special school board to look at the
issue. In 1964, high school plans
were developed, a bond referendum was approved by all three
communities, ground was broke,
and in September 1965, Eastern
Regional High School opened its
doors.
Now, 50 years later, that school,
which cost $1.7 million to construct and had a first-year student
body of 495 freshmen, sophomores and juniors, has grown to a
place with a yearly budget of
about $37 million and a little
more than 2,100 students grades
nine through 12.
That growth, along with the
students, teachers, administrative staff, faculty, BOE members

and everyone else who throughout the years have made Eastern
what it is today, were honored at
the Eastern Regional High School
50 year celebration on May 6.
The ceremony included remarks from Eastern Principal
Robert Tull Jr., Eastern BOE
President Robert DeCicco and
Eastern
Superintendent
Dr.
Harold Melleby Jr.
Also at the event were procla-

mations and resolutions presented by or on behalf of U.S. Congressman Donald Norcross, state
Sen. James Beach, Assembly
members Pamela Lampitt and
Adam
Taliaferro,
Voorhees
Mayor Michael Mignogna, Berlin
Mayor John Armano and Gibbsboro Mayor Edward Campbell.
During
remarks,
Melleby
thanked the Eastern student and
faculty alumni, community mem-

bers and elected officials for taking time from their busy schedules to join the school for the occasion.
Melleby spoke of how since
first becoming superintendent in
2005, hes often encountered colleagues and members of the education community who ask him
of Easterns many years of success.
Melleby said hes asked why

Eastern is annually ranked

among top academic schools in
the state, why Eastern students
achieve at such high levels, why
Eastern sports teams are so competitive, why voters approved
Eastern budgets so easily for so
many years and just what made
Eastern so special.

Voorhees Township BOE passes budget with increase at meeting

By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
The May 6 meeting of the
Voorhees Township Board of Education saw the public hearing

and unanimous adoption of the

2015-2016 school year budget.
With the total budget reaching
$54.05 million and the local tax
levy totaling $43.8 million, a
Voorhees resident with a home at

the average assessed value of

$255,500, will see a K-8 school tax
bill increase of $40.80 per year, or
$3.40 per month.
State aid in this years budget
remained flat at $5.53 million,
with federal aid rising slightly
from $17,077 in last years budget
to $21,227.
The budget also maintains all
existing programs while continuing to support the implementation of the Common Core State
Standards for curriculum, as well
as the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College
and Careers or PARCC examination process.
At the meeting, just some of
the district goals for the budget
were outlined as achieving high
academic standards, actively engaging family and community
members, ensuring business
practices are efficient, recruiting
and retaining high performing
staff members, ensuring student
safety and providing technology
resources and programs that reflect 21st century skills.
Voorhees Township School District Business Administrator
Frank T. DeBerardinis said the
district appreciated so many
good people doing so many good
things, for the schools in town.
Theres no doubt about it,
were a great district because we
have a great teaching staff here
and a great support staff, and we
do thank everyone, DeBerardinis said.
In other news:
During the personnel appointment portion of the meeting, the
board voted 6-3 in favor of approving the re-employment and employment contract of Assistant
Superintendent of Curriculum
Dr. Dianne Young.
Board
members
Richard
Horner, Denise Kirkland, Marissa
Levy, John Schmus, Richard Wojdon and board vice president Barbara Dunleavy voted yes, with
board members Bruce Karpf,
Amy Lynch and board president
Richard Nelson voting no.
Young spoke about the school
district recently being accepted

in our opinion

New Jersey needs a new deal

What we have going on now isnt working for our economy

he economy is brighter across

the nation, but somehow, here
in New Jersey, things are actually going in the opposite direction.
The Garden State had the sixth
highest unemployment rate in the nation in March. The states unemployment rate of 6.5 is a full point above
the nations 5.5 mark.
Since October, the economy has continued to improve in every state except
for seven, with New Jersey among that
poor performing group. Our states unemployment rate has actually increased since then!
Last weeks stats released by the U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics served as
more bad economic news for our state.
First, of course, came the announcement from Moodys Investors Service
that the company had downgraded
New Jerseys credit rating yet again,
for the ninth time during Gov.
Christies time in office, from A1 to A2

Your thoughts
How can New Jersey get out of the
economic funk it is in? Share your
thoughts on this, and other topics,

this time, citing a lack of improvement in the states weak financial position and recent pension-funding
shortfalls.
Christie is headed to court over the
pension fiasco, in which he proposes
to contribute $1.3 billion to pension
funds, less than half of what he promised to do when he signed a pension
overhaul bill in 2011. What comes of
the litigation, and how he or our next
governor fixes the pension system, is
anyones guess.
What should be clear to everyone,
though, is that we need a new deal.
FDR used a New Deal to get the country out of the Great Depression; New

Jersey needs a similar one to get it out

of the Great Recession that the rest of
the nation seems to have climbed out
of.
Where do we start? How about with
our roads.
If you drive around, youll find plenty of potholes, uneven pavement,
cracks and other landmines to navigate. Many small towns have difficulty
repairing it all on their own, and county and state governments often control
many of these roads.
So why not spend some money on
fixing the problem? Send some money
to local governments to get on street
repairs and improvements not just
massive construction efforts on highways.
Fixing our roads would improve the
quality of life for all of us in New Jersey, and it would also create plenty of
new jobs to help jumpstart our economy.

Illustrated library van garners NJLA attention Color-A-Thon is May 30

They say a picture is worth a
thousand words and that certainly is the case with the colorful illustration that adorns a Camden
County Library delivery van that
makes the rounds among the library systems eight branches
each day.
The New Jersey Library Association agreed the illustration is
worthy of notice after the library
had submitted photos of the van
for the associations 2015 Public
Relations Award that was announced at its annual conference
in Long Branch.
Each year, the NJLA seeks out
prime examples of PR work that
are judged on the effectiveness of
the message for a target audience,
originality, creativity of design
and aesthetic appeal.
Camden County Library System Director Linda Devlin decided to nominate the van for the
award earlier this year.
I think the van illustration is
a wonderful way to get the publics attention and advertise what
our libraries have to offer, De-

ple, Melleby said. Yes, it is an
old clich, but true. People do
make a difference. The people
gathered in this assembly tonight
represent the past and present,
people who are unable to be here
tonight, people who passed on, all
of these people are chiefly responsible for making Eastern the exemplary school that it is.
Melleby further praised the
people involved with Eastern
throughout the years, citing rich
tradition, active students, a dedicated professional staff, hardworking support staff, effective
leaders, involved parents and the
three communities that value education.
Last but not least, a board of
education made up of people
whose primary focus has always
been to do whats been best for

students, Melleby said.

With that, Melleby asked DeCicco to the podium for a special
plaque presentation honoring his
38 years of service on the Board of
Education, during which hes provided guidance to four of the districts five superintendents, and
served as president for 28 years.
Melleby described DeCicco as a
strong, effective leader with no
ego, which DeCicco exemplified
when he used his time to speak to
praise the board as a whole.
Im very pleased that the current nine-member board of education have a combined total of
170 years of service to this district, DeCicco said.
The night also included instrumental performances by current
students, a video presentation
outlining Easterns past, present
and future, and tours of the
school for those who had not been
to the building to see the major
additions made throughout the 50
years.

Dont go through this alone.

into the InnovateNJ cohort by the
state Department of Education
after members of the districts innovation committee applied for
the status through highlighting
the districts vision for instruction in the 21st century.
The InnovateNJ website describes the initiative as a way to
support innovation in schools
through participating members
meeting, collaborating and cultivating projects.
Their goal for us is to come together, as a cohort, collaborate on
special projectswe have the opportunity to collaborate with
other school districts that have
been through one-to-one technology programs for 10 years, versus
us where were just starting it
out, so we can hear about their
programs, learn from them,
Young said.
Young said she hopes the district can pursue a badging program in which teachers are able
to complete professional development online and earn a digital
badge to show what has been accomplished.
The board noted that Wojdon
had received an award from the
New Jersey School Board Association for 30 years of service on
the Voorhees Township BOE.
Wojdon said while his first
year on the board was actually
contentious due to the tough discussions taking place regarding
building schools and the costs
and difficulties associated with
such a process, the district eventually built what he believed to be
the foundation for the community.
Ive always said, the educational system is the foundation of
the community thats why
youre going to bring the right
people here, and the right people
have showed up here in Voorhees
Township, Wojdon said.
The next meeting of the
Voorhees Township BOE is
scheduled for June 15 at the district administration building.

CCPD marks two years of

operation

14 THE VOORHEES SUN MAY 1319, 2015

CALENDAR

By Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli, Jr.

This month, we
marked
two
years of progress
in Camden made
by the Camden
County
Police
Department.
This accomplishment was heralded
with
reduced crime,
neighborhood interaction and the return of
childrens laughter to the
streets of the city invincible.
Since 2013, the department
has made significant gains in
reducing the number of total
crime victims in the city and
bolstering public safety in all
21 neighborhoods. The reduction in crime has spanned all
categories including violent
crime, burglaries and overall
crime. Based upon those statistics individually violent
crime is down 28 percent from
2011 compared to 2014. In addition this year violent crime
has dropped another 18 percent from same time period in
2014. Year to date nonfatal
shootings and shootings by
homicide are both down almost 50 percent compared to
2014.
In the departments two
years of operation, the number one reason for this drop in
crime is the determination
and commitment of the 395
police officers who are assigned to the streets and sidewalks of Camden. The men
and women of the department have made a measureable statistical impact in the
community. There are 2,271
less crime victims than in
2011, 1,629 less than in 2012
and 815 in 2013, compared to
the first full year of operation
in 2014.
The residents I meet walking down the street or at our
community
engagement
events are pleased with the

work being done

in their neighborhoods.
The
law enforcement
agency is patrolling the alleyways, stairwells,
sidewalks
and
playground
to
provide the children of Camden
with a safe place
to play.
The Camden County Police
Department has focused on
community
engagement,
human contact and dialogue
that have led to a significant
reduction in nonviolent crime
from burglaries to theft. In addition, over the last 10 years
the average annual rate of
homicides is 48 per year in
the city. In its first full year of
operation the CCPD contracted that number to 33. The
department continues to reduce violent crime and shootings to further reduce the loss
of life within the city.
If you ride around the city
you can see the difference,
and that difference resides in
the children of Camden. Kids
are in the parks and playing
in the streets again, there is
an impact that is tangible to
the city and to our residents.
From reducing violent crime
in our neighborhoods to seeing police officers playing
with our youth and being positive role models, Im confident we will see even more
improvements in the coming
years.

Ashland Church set to host

free community picnic June 14
For those looking for something to do on Sunday, June 14,
Ashland Church is the place to be,
as it will hosting a community
picnic from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
at 33 East Evesham Road in
Voorhees.
The event will feature Games

Giant Hamster Balls, a
unique and exciting way to experience the thrill of 360-degree fun.
Whether standing up or sitting
down, the public can have a blast
rolling around on just about any
surface. For even more fun, add a
second hamster ball to create

competitions. Big enough (and

safe enough) for both kids and
adults.
The Foam Machine Party is
a wet and wild way to flop around
in foam with friends. The inflatable pit creates a giant sudsy sensation. It's good, clean fun for kids
and grown-ups of all ages, and
the foam is biodegradable as well.
The state-of-the-art Mobile
Game Theater is the star of every
party and guaranteed to amaze.
Imagine playing the hottest video
games like Guitar Hero and Madden Football on huge plasma
screens in a climate-controlled
gaming utopia. Now picture all of

that plus multi-player game play

and surround sound audio.
Other features of the day include volleyball, giant slip n
slides, and an art sale where proceeds will be donated to Ashlands Eagles Wings mission.
There is something fun for everyone.
A live radio show and band will
also entertain the crowd with
continuous music by various
artists.
Also, what is a picnic without
food, so come and enjoy the picnic
with burgers, hot dogs, baked
goods, ice cream, water ice and
more prepared by the Ashland
Church Congregation.
There is no charge for the
event; however, a monetary donation or non-perishable food item
for the Park Avenue Food Pantry
is much appreciated. Bring family, bring friends and dont forget
to bring a beach chair, blanket
and bathing suit for the kids.
