Tacoma Rainiers (12-17) at Fresno Grizzlies (15-13)

LHP Mike Montgomery (2-2, 3.14) vs. LHP Tommy Shirley (3-0, 3.26)

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Tacoma dropped the first

game of a four-game series with the Fresno Grizzlies
4-0. It was the first time this year the Rainiers
offense has been shutout, as the lineup went a
combined 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
Tacoma starting pitcher Forrest Snow held Fresno
to just one run on three hits in his 5.0 innings of
work. Ketel Marte and James Jones both checked
in with hits, extending their hitting streaks to 14 and
13 games, resectively.
BOUNCE BACK: Last night the Rainiers suffered
their first shutout since August 25, 2014 when they
lost 8-0 at Iowa. It was the first time they had been
shutout by Fresno since April 21, 2012 and the first
time they had been shutout in Chukchansi Park
since April 12, 2008. Last year, the Rainiers went
4-1 following their five shutout losses, out-scoring
their opponents 20-13 and scoring an average of
4.0 runs per game.
TONIGHTS
STARTERS:
Rainiers
starting
pitcher Mike Montgomery has made two career
starts against the Grizzlies, including one start in
Chukchansi Park in 2012. He has a career record of
1-0 with a 6.00 ERA (8ERx12.0IP) and 10 strikeouts
against Fresno. Montgomerys WHIP of 1.01 is the
fifth lowest mark in the PCL, while his opponent
batting average of .223 (23x103) is the third best
mark in the league among qualified starting
pitchers. In his one road start in Fresno he went 6.0
innings and allowed three runs on eight hits with
four strikeouts.
Grizzlies starting pitcher Tommy Shirley has made
one career appearance against the Rainiers, which
came in relief during Fresnos trip to Tacoma earlier
this month. Shirley tossed 1.0 inning of one-hit relief
on May 3. Shirley faces a Tacoma lineup that hits
left-handed hitters with a .309 (106x343) batting
average, compared to a .252 (169x671) against
righties. Shirley has a 3-0 record with a 2.87 ERA
(5ERx15.2IP) as a starter this year.
GOING STREAKING: Infielder Ketel Marte extended
his hitting streak to 14 games by collecting one hit
last night against Fresno. His 14-game streak is the
longest on the team this season and the longest
active streak in the PCL. He his now hitting .407
(24x59) with nine runs, four doubles, and six RBI
during that stretch - his .407 average is the third
best mark in the league since April 24. Marte is one
game shy of breaking his career-high hitting streak
of 14 games that came June 7-26 of 2013. Marte is
also the only Tacoma player, and one of only three
players in the league, to have played in each of his
clubs first 29 games this year.
RAINIERS VS. FRE:

2014: (10-6)

CONSISTENCY IS KEY: Outfielder James Jones

has recorded at least one hit in every game this year
that he has recorded an at-bat. He is now hitting
.308 (16x52) with 13 runs, two triples, and six stolen
bases. His 13-game hitting streak is the second
longest of his career - Jones has notched two 14game hitting streaks in his career, most recently from
May 9-24 of last year with Seattle.
WORKING FOR THE WEEKEND: This year, the
Rainiers have posted a record of 3-1 on Saturdays,
and have gone 9-5 from Thursday to Saturday. From
Sunday to Wednesday, Tacoma has gone 3-12.
RUNNING WILD: The Rainiers 41 stolen bases lead
the Pacific Coast League, putting them on pace
for 203 stolen bases through 144 regular season
games - Ketel Martes 11 swipes are second in the
league. Tacomas base runners have stolen bases
successfully 78.8% of the time this year, the fourth
best mark in the league.
The Rainiers have not led the league in stolen bases
once since 2005, but 194 stolen bases would have
been the best mark in eight of the last 10 seasons.
Only one team has racked up more than 200 stolen
bases since 2005, when Fresno stole 209 in 2011.
PRODUCTION UP TOP: Over the last six games,
James Jones and Ketel Marte have hit .362 (21x58)
with 10 runs and six RBI from the top two spots in
the batting order. Through 29 games, the top two
members of the Rainiers lineup have combined to hit
.330 (76x230).
CONNECTIONS: Rainiers manager Pat Listach
served as the first base coach for the Houston Astros
during the 2014 season. Eight current members of
the Grizzlies played for Houston last year: Jake
Buchanan, Darin Downs, Brett Oberholtzer, Max
Stassi, Matt Dominguez, Jon Singleton, Alex Presley,
and Domingo Santana.
