FIRST QUARTER GSW @ MEM GAME 3

Courtney Lee playing with confidence right off the bat. Initiating offense against Stephen Curry.
Memphis comes out trapping liberally against Klay Thompson on the PnR.
Klay comes out firing, no confidence problems to start.
Draymond Green starts out on Marc Gasol, Andrew Bogut on Zach Randolph.
Curry and Green run their first PnR against Randolph. This will not become a trend.
Harrison Barnes starts off aggressive, matched up against Lee to a GSW advantage.
Curry moved off of Lee and onto Tony Allen for a possession. Curry goes back to Lee when
Leandro Barbosa enters the game. Barbosa immediately torched for a Mike Conley three.
Iguodala enters the game and Z-Bo gets to hide on him defensively. (GSW lineup is Barbosa,
Curry, Iguodala, Barnes, Festus Ezeli). Barnes is covering Z-Bo to a MEM advantage.
Lee has a great first quarter. Aggressive and attacking when initiating against Curry, providing
good D on Curry when matched up against him.
Barbosa has a rough first quarter in all respects.

SECOND QUARTER GSW @ MEM GAME 3

Harrison Barnes starts off on Kosta Koufos defensively in the small lineup.
Warriors offense has lost flow from end of Q1 to beginning of Q2.
GSW transition D springs a leak (Livingston)
Klay Thompson the primary scorer on the floor with Stephen Curry out, GSW makes no attempt
to get him the ball in offensively deficient lineup.
Warriors call timeout and get Klay a look the next time down for a contested long two (miss).
Andre Iguodala providing nothing on offense.
Warriors turn to Andrew Bogut in the post against Koufos, but he cant get a good look.
Koufos gets O-REB over Draymond Green, the first of many problems for GSW with their small
lineup.
Beno Udrih has been allowed to play without penalty on defense because GSW hasnt attacked
him.
Curry moved onto Tony Allen, loses D-REB.
Marc Gasol dices up Bogut in the post, gets him again on a drive, third time he draws a foul.
Warriors allow Vince Carter to outwork them down low for O-REB/putback.
GSW has the matchup they want with Steph against Beno, but rather than letting him work in
isolation where he can clearly win they bring screens and crowd the action.
Warriors look shook by the crowd for the first time.
Heady timeout by Dave Joerger with the game getting real loose and the Grizzlies up 11 points.
The crowd was into it but those are the situations the Warriors thrive on.
Draymond Green caught ballwatching on his help duties allows wide open Jeff Green three.
Klay continues to show smart aggression coming off a sloppy Warriors offensive set.
Warriors pressing in transition on a Klay missed three, bothered by incredible Tony Allen hustle.
Bogut and Klay are soft on a PnR trap, allow easy bucket for Gasol on the roll.
Memphis has officially decided to pound the ball down low.
Klay extra attention on the dig for said interior play leaves Conley wide open for a three.
Harrison Barnes makes a crowd silencing shot backing up Mike Conley after a switch.
Joerger mixing up his coverage on Curry by moving Tony Allen onto him temporarily.

Gasol starts in on Draymond with two makes.

Memphis hard traps on PnR have good timing and are working.
Grizzlies go back to Lee against Curry to initiate offense.
Warriors showing more signs of bad body language. Heads and eyes pointed to the ground.
Harrison Barnes covering Randolph again in the small lineup. Z-Bo pushing him around.
More hard traps from Memphis working on Curry.
Tony Allen makes a superstar play on defense against Klay with a steal.
Now Andre Iguodala gets the assignment on Z-Bo, commences getting pushed around.
First team defense chant one of the cooler chants Ive heard. Chaotic, guttural, perfect for
Memphis.

THIRD QUARTER GSW @ MEM GAME 3

Steve Kerr tells Heather Cox that theyll start doubling the post.
Klay Thompson with another tough jumper against Tony Allen.
More Marc Gasol tearing into Draymond Green.
I may be wrong but I believe this is the first time weve seen a GSW PnR versus Zach Randolph
since the first quarter.
GSW gives Harrison Barnes a possession on Mike Conley defensively.
Conley is a warrior.
Tony Allen shaking screens when running through the gauntlet to cover Klay like hes a wide
receiver shedding press coverage.
Golden State gets cute running a Steph PnR targeting Z-Bo, but the real action is a Klay baseline
sprint. They should have been doing the former all game long.
Courtney Lee is so confident that hes taking ill-advised PUJITs in a 4-on-1. He steps right back
into another shot the next time down, which is the type of confidence MEM needs out of him.
Warriors start to get their transition game going. Unfortunately for them it only lasts for a few
minutes.
Grizzlies ball movement is at peak levels and it comes against a stretch of solid Warriors
defense.
Conley playing at a high level, sees a switch leaving Klay to battle Gasol for positioning on the Oglass and takes a quick shot. Gasol boards and gets fouled.
Memphis offense continues to be crisp.
Harrison Barnes gets two straight demerits on defense, one for turning his head and another for
a bad double-team.
Warriors have no control of the tempo of this game. Stephen Currys fingerprints are not all over
it.
Klay gets his fourth PF with 6:00 to play. Covering Mike Conley has taken its toll and Conley got
him on the speed move toward the baseline.
Warriors switching on DEF not good enough to contain the roll guy. Fundamental problem.
Courtney Lee giving Mike Conley a breather by covering Steph. Conley gets Leandro Barbosa.
Jeff Green has been both bad and good in this game so far, mediocre.
The Festus Ezeli on Zach Randolph experiment begins, and Z-Bo promptly starts creating points
out of it.
Barbosa looks to be the worst player on the floor tonight.
Lee continues to initiate offense against Curry, giving Conley additional rest.

Saw another glimpse of a GSW PnR against Randolph. Theyve completely forgotten it.
Kosta Koufos continues his strong game.
Iguodala back in and Randolph immediately goes to hide on him defensively.
Back to Z-Bo versus Ezeli. Memphis loves this. GSW running Ezeli at center, Barnes at PF
(covering Jeff Green), Iguodala (covering Koufos), Barbosa and Curry. That Iguodala, a so-called
premier defender, is covering an offensive placeholder was curious.
With Steph on the floor and cooled off, the Warriors decide to go into Ezeli vs. Koufos. Very
curious.
Now Z-Bo goes back to work on Ezeli and that will become a theme. Randolph blows by him
right away.
Golden State still not making the Grizzlies pay for having Beno Udrihs lacking defense on the
floor.
GSW goes back to Ezeli against Koufos again for another misguided possession.
Barbosa commits a terrible foul while in the bonus.
Memphis tries a possession with Jeff Green covering Curry, which they can do because they hid
Udrih on Iguodala.

FOURTH QUARTER GSW @ MEM GAME 3

Kosta Koufos continues to play well.

Zach Randolph now breaking in Marreese Speights.
Iguodala wont attack Vince Carter on offense, but he does draw a shooting foul on VC later.
Speights was up and down in his limited minutes before his calf injury.
Tony Allen with another amazing steal, followed by a nice block from Klay Thompson on the
other end, all while avoiding an early fifth foul.
Memphis second unit looks like it can get bogged down offensively at any time.
Curry and the Warriors still letting Udrih off the hook. Udrih would finish the game at +12.
Marc Gasol shows first signs of fatigue, settling for a fadeaway against Draymond Green. (miss)
Koufos playing next to Gasol, finds himself covering Harrison Barnes. Barnes misses an open
three due to the mismatch, but this is exploitable if Memphis continues the same substitution
pattern.
Klay chokes two free throws his first signs of diming on the night.
Gasol cant beat Draymond again more signs of slowing down late.
Vince Carter has been a mess for most of the night.
Conley looks like he tweaked his groin, stays in the game. Injury unclear.
Finally, Steph gets back to attacking Randolph in the pick-and-roll. Klay hits a three.
Warriors getting punished for going small with Draymond, Barnes and Iggy against Gasol and
Randolph.
Tony Allen with a veteran accidental bump of Andre Iguodala while hes taking free throws. He
hits 1-of-2 only because MEM got a lane violation.
Harrison Barnes is back to covering Randolph. He does a good job, but this is a matchup that the
Grizzlies like.
The Warriors have chilled the tiniest bit on bad shots and turnovers since the first half, at least
through the four-minute mark.
Barnes shows good explosion and confidence dunking over Gasol on a bang-bang play.

Wondering why Courtney Lee isnt in the game instead of Jeff Green, who is covering impotent
Andre Iguodala.
Gasol continuing to fade energy-wise.
4:04 mark Iguodala now covering Tony Allen, who is typically the guy teams hide their bad
defenders on.
Curry gets his first fourth quarter point on a free throw at the 3:36 mark. Draymond Green gets
hit with a lane violation to wipe out his second.
Grizzlies go back to Z-Bo versus Barnes, GSW doubles and Z-Bo has an unforced turnover.
Iguodala enjoys one of his 2-3 good plays on the night pushing for a transition assist.
Barnes now gets a shot at Marc Gasol, plays good defense, but Iguodala (covering/sagging off
Tony Allen) gets beat when he turns his head against the Allen cut. When Stephen Curry
completely falls asleep on Courtney Lee, Lee buries a three to put the penultimate nail in the
coffin. Barnes actually managed to challenge the Lee three and was everywhere on the play.
Coming out of the timeout, Curry passes up an open three to pass to Iguodala for a long two
(miss).
Grizzles go back into Randolph vs. Barnes and Barnes does an okay job, but the advantage is still
there when GSW doubles him. Gasol and Memphis get lucky when he hits a bank shot step-back
in the resulting scramble.
Gasol gets his sixth foul when he wearily closes out on Iguodala, who converts the And-1.
88-93: Randolph back up against Barnes, doubled and Lee misses a somewhat open three on the
kickout. Draymond gets the board and pushes in transition, trying for the coast to coast but he
gets stripped on the live-ball turnover. Tony Allen lays it in on the other side.
Whoomp there it is.
1:09: Still just one point for Curry.
Conley hits a crowd pleasing layup to end the night.
Curry gets token foul shots, missed the first one when the ref said he wasnt ready, made the redo, then missed the second foul shot to cap off a miserable night.

TAKEAWAYS

Really Bad Turnover Count

o Draymond 2, Klay 2, Curry 4
Bad Shot Count
o Curry at least 7, Klay 1, Draymond 2 (both in Q4)
Courtney Lee is giving Memphis tremendous flexibility by covering Curry well from time to time,
and hes showing the aggressiveness they need him to show on the offensive end.
The Grizzlies are trapping the pick and roll with Curry or Klay with great efficiency. Theyre
mixing it up and everybody else is on a line while they do that on the fly.
Golden State cannot continue to play small against the Grizzlies. Even if we expect Draymond to
find a higher gear on defense, and note that Barnes was indeed impressive at times, the strategy
plays into what Memphis does well. It has also led to a lot of small advantages on 50-50 balls
and in some cases it has afforded Memphis some prime matchups. The Grizzlies had a +14
advantage on points in the paint and much of the Grizzlies offense was predicated on their size
advantage.

The Warriors blew it by not attacking Randolph on the pick-and-roll. This one is self
explanatory.
Hiding Curry on Tony Allen is going to result in a rebounding advantage and get him tangled up
down low.
On that note, the Grizzlies did so much more than Ive seen all series in the knock Steph Curry
around department.
Andre Iguodala was dead weight last night. He was the guy Memphis hid their bad defenders on
and defensively he was matched up with lesser offensive players. The defense doesnt respect
his offensive game. He had about 2-3 good plays and was otherwise invisible and/or getting
beat.
Leandro Barbosa absolutely sunk the Warriors last night and was the worst player on the court
by far. As a bonus, the Grizzlies would rest Mike Conley on him and stick Courtney Lee on Curry.
Shaun Livingston didnt add much pop to the Warriors attack and the Warriors may want to
consider dropping Barbosa from the rotation outright.
Draymond Green got a flack for being out of control on offense last night and it was really just
two bad shots in the fourth quarter. Id be more concerned with his lack of mojo on the
defensive end and the fact he might have to pick up more slack than he can handle on offense.
Klay got back on track in the confidence department outside of two critical missed freebies. He
made a bunch of tough shots and had to chase Mike Conley around all night. Hes not quite the
offender that Steph is right now on the decision-making, but like Steph he has brought some
bad habits into the postseason with the degree of difficulty shots.
Steve Kerr has not been impressive in this round. More on that later.
Steph Currys struggles are rooted in the best-case scenario defense that Memphis brings, but
the Warriors need to slow down and get the matchups they want. Curry was rushed, targeting
the wrong weaknesses of the Grizz, and sometimes totally passed over for lesser options. When
things got out of reach, he showed a second straight games worth of underconfident misses.
He even gave the rock up in a critical spot so Iguodala could chuck up a long two. The lack of
discipline in the Warriors system right now and the Grizzlies dominance in the paint have made
Curry inefficient, sloppy and mortal. The Warriors correctly want to run the Grizzlies bigs up and
down the floor and also get easier looks against a good defense, but they need to walk before
they run and take the Beno Udrih matchup when they can get it.
Speaking of which, the Warriors need to hand the ball to Steph and get out of the way when
Udrih is in the game. When they actually did try to attack this, they brought a screener and that
just created traffic.
Kosta Koufos gave some great minutes tonight.
Speaking of big guys, Andrew Bogut needs to play a lot more.
Bogut couldnt cover Zach Randolph, either. To sum it up, neither of the Warriors starting bigs
could cover the Grizzlies starting bigs at all last night.
Tony Allen is a monster. The First Team Defense chant has so much potential.

The Warriors looked visibly shaken as early as the second quarter. Eyes darting to the ground,
heads down, the whole bit. Inexperience was laughed off as recently as after Game 1. Its
showing all the way around the room.
Kerr had no control over the tenor of this game. Playing small isnt ridiculous but its not
working. Having Festus Ezeli on the floor was a huge mistake, and I didnt think he played all that
bad. The Grizzlies just relentlessly attacked him with Zach Randolph and thats an unfair cover
for him. Then they went to him for two plays on offense while Curry stood and watched.
The Warriors defense wasnt great. Too many pointless switches, unpolished double teams, soft
traps. It didnt help that they were faced with mismatches much of the night.
On the other side, Dave Joerger mixed up his coverage on Curry nicely, has seemingly pushed all
the right buttons.
The Grizzlies offense was humming even if the numbers dont jump off the page. They showed a
lot of precision with their game plan and their sets were crisp. Mike Conley, tough guy of the
year, is a big part of that obviously.
Jeff Green didnt kill Memphis and he even had a few nice plays. Not great, but good enough.
The Marreese Speights injury could bring David Lee into the fold. Or not. Lee is not the answer
unless scoring becomes a critical issue. The only thing that matters is that GSW pumps up
Boguts minutes and uses Ezeli when Gasol is on the floor, rather than when Randolph is playing
center.
Golden State has to get more aggressive against the Grizzlies second unit, particularly when
Udrih is on the floor. Making sure Steph and/or Klay is on the floor during those minutes seems
like it would be easy to swing even if you had to stagger from the normal rotation pattern.
Gasol continues to slow during the fourth quarters of games. I wouldnt be shocked to learn of
some sort of injury but for now well just call it mileage.
Harrison Barnes needs more minutes and more touches. Andre Iguodalas minutes would be the
first candidate to take from.
Golden State needs Draymond and Bogut in against Gasol and Randolph when it matter most,
and especially in crunch time. They are both natural covers at their respective positions but for
whatever reason GSW isnt seeing things that way.
The Warriors can still make the correct adjustments and turn dominant in an instant. They dont
have unlimited lives here. If Kerr is too rigid or the team doesnt kick their bad habits habits
developed when they beat up on bad teams, then any bit of bad luck could send them to a
series loss. Kerr has been a guy to make adjustments so far, so Im not thinking about changing
my Warriors pick.
