Dr. William E. Evans (Karim)
Thanks Danny. Hello class my name is Dr. William E. Evans, I was the most recent CEO of St. Jude and
it has been an honor to hold this positon for the last 10 years. I will be talking today about the challenges
we have faced as a company and also the success weve had throughout the years that we have been in
operation.
Slide 9 Challenges
As you can imagine, being a non-profit company we solely rely heavily on pubic donations, almost
70% worth. Only 13% comes from insurance and 12% from government grants.
Just as a side note.. The 13% & 12% St. Jude receives is vastly different than most other hospitals who
generate more than 90% of their revenue from insurance recoveries and other sources.
Running a hospital is not cheap either; our estimated operating expenses are about 2 million dollars
EACH DAY.

We also have challenges medically,

Kids who go to St. Jude suffer from catastrophic illnesses and many of the treatment protocols require
care that can last for years.
Ex: the protocol to treat acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common form of childhood cancer,
takes 3 year+ is more than $500,000 in expenses.
Slide 10 Success in Numbers
St. Jude currently has 6 affiliate hospitals:
1.The St. Jude Midwest Affiliate in Peoria, Illinois
2.LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, Louisiana
3.Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana
4.The St. Jude Tri-Cities Affiliate in Johnson City, Tennessee
5.Huntsville Womens and Childrens Hospital in Huntsville, Alabama
6.St. Johns Hospital in Springfield, Missouri
Just to name a few..
Additionally, St. Jude continues to define the forefront of clinical care and research by aligning with two
Southern California institutions: Rady Childrens Hospital, San Diego; and the University of
California, San Diego (UCSD).
Why is this imporatant? This unique alliance is designed to benefit both patient care and research
efforts. Also, this will allow the combination of resources and expertise to pursue clinical trials as
well as basic and transactional research.
Slide 11 What were doing right
Quality before growth is very important: David L. McKee, our fundraising icon, has pursued steady
growth in hospitals fundraising approaches while focusing on St Judes financial needs.
These needs were fulfilled with planning:
St. Jude long-range plans for 5 years but finishes them in 2-3 years, always setting the bar high.
I am about to show you a short clip of St Jude and some of the wonderful childrens faces we have
brought smiles to.
2 min video.

Slide 12 Milestones
To further describe the success we have had, here are a list of milestones behind me we have
accomplished over the years.
-The hospital has played a pivotal role in pushing U.S. pediatric cancer survival rates from 20 to 80
percent overall, and is the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer
Center devoted to children.
-We have been mentioned in many magazines as the best company to work for, but how do we achieve
this year after year? Whats the secret?
Slide 13 Employees
Employees! They are the heart of the organization. These employees have been dedicated to take care of
these children and give them hope to live a better life.
Jobs are available for different talents: hospital, fundraising, faculty, nursing, postdoctoral research,
and clinical fellowship positions.
Employees get 70 hours of training each year, and partial tuition reimbursements towards
undergraduate and advanced degree programs.
Slide 14 Benefits

Also in 2011, for the sixth consecutive year, St. Jude is named as one of the top 10 institutions in the
annual "Best Places to Work in Academia" list by The Scientist magazine
Conclusion
In conclusion, St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital has changed the way the world treats
childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. No family ever pays St. Jude for the care their
child receives and, for every child treated here, thousands more have been saved worldwide
through St. Jude discoveries. If you wish to donate to this cause you can visit stjude.org or following
us on facebook.com/stjude and twitter.com/stjude.
