ENVIRONMENTAL TEAMWORK_____________________________________________
Department of Conservation (California Geological Survey)
California Rocks! Explore and learn about our state's geology with help from our geologists who will present a
variety of rocks, minerals, & products they are use in. Demonstrations using the "Make-A-Quake" machine, mini
tsunami tank, liquefaction box, and erupting volcano will educate students about our states earthquake, volcano,
& tsunami hazards!

Department of Conservation (Office of Mine Reclamation)

The Science of Mines - Collect soil samples for analysis, identify different types of rocks from mines, but look out
for about 47,000 abandoned mines in California and identify hazards and wildlife from our mine model.

Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment

Pig Lungs, Wheel of Science Trivia and More! Get an up-close view and touch healthy and unhealthy pig lungs
for a hands-on experience of how airborne pollutants damage lungs. Learn about air contaminants that pose a
threat to our lungs and learn about ways we can all reduce air pollution. Challenge your science knowledge at the
Wheel of Science to win a prize. Make a pledge to take action to reduce your carbon footprint at the coloring
station.

WATER AND WILDLIFE

California Coastal Commission (Public Education)
Did you know that there are different types of plastic and that some of them SINK and some FLOAT in water? If
plastic waste finds its way to our ocean, different marine species will be impacted based on where the plastic ends
up in the WATER COLUMN. Lets investigate!

Department of Fish & Wildlife (Mobile Vet Lab)

Animal Rescue! Take a tour and learn how injured and ill wildlife are helped in this state of the art, moving
veterinary laboratory on wheels.

Department of Fish & Wildlife (Office of Communications, Education & Outreach)

Californias Natural Diversity: No Place like home! California has both more plants and animals than any other state
in the United States and more species that live only in California and nowhere else on earth. Through a fun,
interactive activity, students will learn that California wildlife comes in all shapes and sizes and lives in a variety of
habitats.

Department of Fish & Wildlife (Office of Spill Prevention & Response)

Come learn about sea birds and sea otters in this interactive display of marine specimens and pelts.

State Lands Commission (Marine Facilities Division)

Protect California! See how state scientists protect California's resources and public lands and waterways.

FISHING IN THE CITY

_______

Department of Fish & Wildlife

The Touch, the Feel of Aquatic Science Specimens! Cast Away while visiting Fishing in the City where there will be
casting instructions, fishing displays and hands on specimens.

PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT_______________________________________________

Air Resources Board
Air Quality Quandary Use a State Scientist Day Ozone map and determine the Air Quality for the day by using the
Air Quality Index (AQI)! See and touch the technology that controls smog forming evaporative emissions at your
local gas station. Learn about climate change and how your everyday activities impact the air quality and the
environment.

Department of Food and Agriculture (Pesticide Regulation)

Identify endangered species, investigate pesticides and the protective measures that the state takes with them.

State Water Resources Control Board (Office of Public Participation)

Dr. Neptune & Madame Eeliza Sharkesian, Ph. SEA- Water World Science Show (SWRCB) (10:30-11 am) Dr.
Neptune & Madame Eeliza (Environmental Scientists) will fascinate and engage students and parents with a fun 25
minute interactive science show. Enthusiastic students volunteers will manipulate water molecules in all three
states: solid, liquid & gas! Every child will have fun exploring the many water uses in California, while discovering
the dangers of drought and low water supply. Students will discover how clouds are formed and how to clean
water! Dr. Neptune & Madame Eeliza will be giving a special gift to each Water Conservation Hero who is willing
to take the Water Conservation Oath.
Prize Wheel (State Water Board) - Water is all around us in rivers, lakes and streams, but what do we really know
about water? The Water Wheel is a chance for children to test their knowledge of our water resources. What
percent of wildlife near cities depend on local rivers and streams for food and habitat? What percent of your brain
is water? This is a fun and educational activity. Parents can test their knowledge too!
Meet the Bag Monster Straight from the Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch comes the Bag Monster, the monster is
comprised of five hundred single-use plastic bags, the kind we all receive when we go shopping. Many of these
bags become litter and end up in our oceans as marine debris. Also, plastic bags are commonly mistaken for food
or prey by seabirds, marine mammals, fish and sea turtles. Hear what the scientists have to say about the impact
of these plastic bags on our oceans, rivers and lakes. Is there a bag monster in your house?

SCIENCE ROCKS!

_____________

Department of Parks & Rec (Cultural Resources Division)

Obsidian! Come find out what it is, where it is from, and why it ROCKS! Many prehistoric tools are made from
obsidian, knowing the source material and where the artifact was placed stratigraphically allows archaeologists to
scientifically understand when tools were made. Come check out the artifacts and see how stratigraphy happens.

Department of Parks & Recreation (Natural Resources)

Exotic weeds in state parks affect natural habitat and wildlife, learn how! Learn what fun it is to be an Ecologist!
The State Parks exhibit will highlight Californias diversity and her state parks, and showcase the work conducted
by State Park ecologists to protect the natural resources and biodiversity of the state. Interactive displays will
include invasive exotic weeds that threaten native biodiversity, tools used for monitoring wildlife and vegetation
such as wildlife traps and measuring devices, and recordings of bird and frog calls. Two live desert tortoises to
touch will illustrate the importance of protecting native wildlife.

Department of Public Health (Food, Drug, and Radiation Safety)

Learn how to read the nutrition fact labels as a tool for making smart and healthy food choices. Learn how to
differentiate plastic containers according to the recycle codes.

SCIENTIFIC DETECTIVES____________________________________________________
Department of Public Health (Radiologic Health Branch)
ON Hand: Small sources of naturally occurring and man-made radioactive materials, with radiation detection
instrumentation. Volunteers will demonstrate the A.L.A.R.A. Principle used to maintain occupational exposures "as
low as reasonably achievable" by the use of time (limits), distance (inverse square law) and shielding materials
(paper, plastic and metal).

Department of Public Health (Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Branch)

Lead Detectives - beware of the villainous "Predator Lead"! Learn where this Predator lurks and what you can do to
stop lead exposure.

Women in Mining
Rocks and minerals in toothpaste! Vitamins too? Learn how rocks and minerals are used in everyday life and keep
us healthy.

NOT-SO-CREEPY CRAWLIES
Department of Conservation (Division of Oil, Gas, & Geothermal Resources)

core and petroleum samples.

Department of Food & Agriculture (Plant Health & Pest Prevention Services)
Invaders? Learn about invasive species by identifying animal skulls, pelts and preserved specimens - learn why its
important to protect our native plants and animals.

Department of Food & Agriculture (Plant Pest Diagnostics)

Bugs? Beetles? Flies? Predators? The Entomology Lab will be displaying drawers of cool, flashy insects.
Microscopes will aid students to see what some of them look like up close. Some live insects will also be on
display.

Department of Food & Agriculture (Plant Pest Diagnostics Nematology)

Nematodes! What are they? How do they impact our food? Learn what a nematode is, why they are important,
and what happens to our food. Plus how nematodes attack plants, spread from plant to plant, and are detected
and regulated by the scientists.

Department of Resources, Recycling, and Recovery (Office of Public Affairs)
