Executive Summary
The use of cellular mobile phone has increased dramatically in the last few
years. The rapid growth in the use of cellular mobile phone has attracted the
attention of many service providers to start their operations in Quetta city.
In order to operate in the competitive environment, these service providers
have introduced various service packages to increase their market share.
The objective of this research article was to provide with a comprehensive
analysis of the cellular mobile phone users market and to envisage the
behavior of mobile users preferences for various service packages and
companies. The analysis of the users preferences about the various
characteristics of cellular mobile phones reveals that they assign highest
priority to instant connectivity and low call rates. The analysis is an
important guide for the future planning of the existing and new aspirant
cellular service providers to better understand the users behavior and their
preferences.
Currently operating mobile networks in Pakistan includes Mobilink which
works under the GSM technology with 900/1800 bandwidth. The company is
planning to upgrade the network to UMTS 3G/HSPA 3.5G. Mobilink is a
subsidiary of Orascom Telecom and the company claims to have 30.75
million active customers across country. UMTS is the Universal Mobile
Telecommunications System and is the third generation technology that is
used in the GSM based standards.
UMTS has several benefits including the fast data transfer rate as it allows
up to 45Mbit/S. Mobilink has also launched its sub network named Mobilink
Infinity which is currently operating only in Karachi and has over twenty
thousand customers at the moment. Mobilink Infinity is only available for
billing customers as it operates at the WiMax 802.16e based network
technology. Warid is the second largest mobile provider operating across the
country with a total subscriber base of 20.10 million.

Introduction
Primary Data
Cell phones now allow easier texting, Web surfing, GPS navigation, and
social networking while keeping up with their day job--voice calling. Smart
phones such as the iPhone and Android-based models are leading the
charge. Thanks to their advanced operating systems, they can run all types
of applications, from Twitter to games, restaurant guides, shopping
assistants, and more.
Their cameras are getting better, too. The newest smart phones typically
come with 8-, or higher-megapixel cameras with advanced controls and the
ability to take HD videos. And unlike most stand-alone cameras, they
provide a multitude of ways to share their content via Facebook, YouTube, email and a new host of Internet-based "cloud" services. The data networks
they run on are getting faster, too, enabling them to download and upload
large files in less time, provide a better Web-browsing experience, and
perform new tricks such as stream high-definition videos, and support video
chats via front-facing cameras. Conventional cell phones aren't gathering
dust, though.
Many of the newest models have large displays, keyboards, and Internet
capabilities. Their e-mail and applications aren't as robust as a smart
phone's, but they're less complicated to use. And there still are phones with
fewer bells and whistles for users with more straightforward needs.
The distinction between prepaid and postpaid plans might be disintegrating.
Prepaid plans traditionally have been the best option for customers who
value flexibility and want to avoid long-term contracts, but they typically
involved paying up front for the phone, with a substandard selection of
devices that were often far from the cutting edge.
Now major carriers are offering plans for the latest and greatest phones that
decouple the cost of the device from the cost of the service. The plans vary
greatly and change often, but the basic deal is essentially this: Pay full price
for the phone up front, or pay monthly installments over time until it is paid
offwhich often amounts to an interest-free loan on your device. Once the
phone is paid off, you only pay for service.
Carriers that focus on prepaid service, such as TracFone, Straight Talk, and
Net10, still rate quite high in our customer satisfaction survey, with high
scores for value. And many of these carriers now offer hot phones such as
the Apple iPhone 6, or allow you to use your own phoneprovided it's
compatible with their network.
Carriers such as Republic and Ting are using new strategies to keep costs
down and simplify service options. Republic combines Wi-Fi and cellular
service, automatically routing calls over your home Wi-Fi network, then
handing off to the cellular network when you're out of range of a hot spot.
Ting has perhaps the simplest plan of allyou pay a monthly fee for each
device on the plan, then you are billed at the end of the month for the voice
minutes and data that you use. The less you use, the less you pay. Both
carriers scored high in our Ratings.
Our survey found that most respondents (73 percent) still have traditional
(postpaid) plans, with the rest of respondents split fairly evenly between
traditional no-contract plans and prepaid plans.
On the whole, we found that customers with traditional no-contract plans
were the most satisfied.
InstaPhone:
InstaPhone is the first cellular service provider company which started its
operations in Pakistan. 4 It was established in 1990 and started its
operations on September 1990 from Islamabad and Karachi, with its head
office in Islamabad, and gradually extended its operations in different cities
of Pakistan. Currently, InstaPhone is providing its services in 185 cities of
Pakistan.
It aims to further extend its network coverage in other cities of Pakistan with
CDMA Technology. From the inception, InstaPhone network had been using
Analog Mobile Phone System (AMPS) Technology but, with the advancement
in technology it converted its networks to D-MPS Technology which is also
referred to as Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) Technology. InstaPhone
started its operations in Quetta on October 1991.
Zong(Paktel):
Mobilink:
Mobilink aims to gradually increase WAP and internet services to other cities
of Pakistan as well. Mobilink is providing roaming services at national and
international level but receiving no roaming charges at national level.
Mobilink is facing tough competition from its counterparts these days.
Keeping in view the market competition, Mobilink has always tried to set up
unbeatable rates with quality services for its customers under different
packages.

Secondary Data
The recent statistics of May, 2008, for the number of subscribers of each
cellular network in Pakistan is given bellow in a descending order
The sample selected for the study was surveyed through questionnaire. The
respondents surveyed were asked to mention the mobile connection they
were using for the first time and the mobile connection they are using
currently. Their responses are given in the table below.
The table above shows that many respondents have abandoned the use of
mobile connections of InstaPhone and Paktel while Mobilink also lost some of
its customers to other networks such as Ufone, Telenor and AlWarid over
time.
Al-Warid according to the survey has gained the greatest number of
customers, while Telenor is the second that gained greater number of
customers. When the respondents were asked whether they are satisfied
with their current network connection, 72% of them said they are satisfied
while only 28% of them said they are not satisfied with their current network
connection.
The users were asked to rank their preferences in order of priority of the
following characteristics of cellular network connection. Their responses are
summarized in the following table.
The figures in the above table shows that users assign highest priority to the
instant connectivity and low call rates. But they assign least priority to the
internet connection. This may be because of the difficulty, cost and the low
tendency for using internet on mobile phones. The users are almost neutral
about the accessibility and voice quality.
While there is tendency of low priority for the low SMS rates because very
few people use SMS. Taken together as a whole, the data above reveals that
instant connectivity is the users first priority, low call rates at second, voice
quality at third accessibility at fourth, low SMS calls at fifth and internet
connection at sixth preference respectively.
The data above gives an insight to the cellular mobile phone service
providers to gauge the preferences of users and to devise their strategies
accordingly.
Conclusion
The use of cellular mobile phone service is growing rapidly. The service
providers are trying to attract more customers and capture high share in the
growing market. But as the competition is becoming stiffer and stiffer among
various service providers, and the market is becoming saturated, new and
customer oriented strategies are required to sustain the market share.
The Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) technology is now out dated and
the Global System for Mobile communication (GSM), which is Sim based
technology, is gaining popularity among users because of its advantages.
GSM, Sim based technology is easily installable and widely available in the
ordinary shops. It can also store contact numbers with huge storage
capacity.
When introducing new packages, the service providers need to impose low
activation charges. The cellular mobile phone users are highly sensitive to
the connectivity problem. It is therefore suggested that these cellular
networks must improve their communication servers.
Similarly, the customers give value to those packages which are low in costs.
Many customers do not use the new and customized packages due to the
problem of communicating those packages in English. It is again suggested
that these packages must be communicated in simple way so that the
customers can understand them.
Pakistan is a developing country facing so many hurdles through its way.
There are few areas where our nation has progressed at a very fast speed
and cell phone industry is one of them. Cell phone networks in Pakistan are
very advance and it is only because of the vast subscriber base that new
companies are coming in every day.
Recommendations
Before you buy a phone, consider the service provider. (See our Ratings of
service providers, available to subscribers.) Service providers determine
which phone models work on their networks. So when you're replacing your
phone, use this cell phone guide to help you decide whether you'll stay with
your current cellular service carrier or switch to a new one. Major carriers
rely heavily on two incompatible digital networks.
Sprint and Verizon networks use mainly Code Division Multiple Access
(CDMA) technology, while AT&T and T-Mobile use Global System for Mobile
communication (GSM) technology. All of those carriers also support highspeed data networks. The network plays a big part in the capabilities your
phone will have and, to some extent, its performance.
When you're ready to buy a phone, you'll first have to decide which of the
two types, conventional cell or smart, meets your needs and budget. Choose
a conventional model if you mainly need voice and text-messaging
capability, and perhaps a music player and camera. Smart phones, with their
advanced operating systems, larger displays, QWERTY keyboards, and other
computer-like features, are a better choice for people who need frequent
access to multiple e-mail accounts, a sophisticated organizer for
appointments and contacts, the ability to open Office documents, and
Internet-based services.
