Apiary Inspectors of America, 2014

Investigation of Environmental Exposures of Honey Bees to Pesticides

Author: AIA Resolutions Committee

The Apiary Inspectors of America (AIA} exists for the purpose of protecting the health and welfare of honey bee
colonies in the United States. There is continued concern among beekeepers, researchers and the general
public regarding potential impacts of pesticides on honey bee health.
Be it resolved that the AIA, at its annual meeting on January 11, 2014 requests that the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) conduct monitoring for the presence and levels of pesticides, including neonicotinoids,
in water sources, vegetation and other identified potential routes of exposure to honey bees.
Be it further resolved that this environmental monitoring should be done through regulatory agencies at the
federal or state level.
Be it further resolved that the EPA consult with State Apiarists or apiculturists in an advisory role in determining
the potential routes of exposure of honey bees to pesticides.

Administrator Gina McCarthy

Secretary Tom Vilsack
U.S. Department of Agriculture
1400 Independence Ave., S.W.

Dear Administrator McCarthy and Secretary Vilsack,
Thank you for continuing to communicate and work collaboratively with Vermont as we
restore the health of one of our State's most valuable natural resources. Vermont land owners,
businesses and municipalities at the local and state level are committed to restoring the health of
Lake Champlain. We appreciate the partnership efforts in developing the Proposal for a Clean
Lake Champlain. Support from the EPA and the USDA remains critical.
As you read in our previously submitted Proposal, Vermont is determined to address
water quality through ongoing partnerships and implementation of creative approaches. In order
to have a strategic, comprehensive and efficient plan of action it is critical to solicit a myriad of
resources including staff, financing and technical assistance from the EPA, USDA, as well as
other federal entities such as the Economic Development Administration, the Army Corp of
Engineers, the Federal Highway Administration, and the Federal Emergency Management
Administration.
As the state of Vermont works to revise the Proposal, we would like the EPA's and
USDA 's support in garnering these commitments from other federal agencies and entities. We
believe it is important to engage all stakeholders in water quality restoration and planning in
order to devise as strong and comprehensive a strategy for Lake Champlain's TMDL as might be
possible.
The state will continue to revise the Proposal, dedicating resources and technical
expertise while communicating the sense of urgency amongst our partners. We recognize the
critical relationship between agriculture and water quality, historically and into the future, and
thus hope you will encourage these partnerships. I look forward to continuing this discussion
about enhanced resources from the EPA and the USDA to help the state of Vermont reach its
water quality goals.
Sincerely,
Chuck Ross
