Transforming lives with the love of God in Jesus Christ

Nativitys vestry had a terrific retreat on Saturday, May 9, to discuss the vision and
mission of our congregation. In eight short years, our church has grown from zero
to a large and healthy parish with a beautiful building and over 200 people in
attendance on an average Sunday. Its a great place to be!
In talking together about the priorities for the church in the year and years ahead,
the vestry discerned some large goals for the parish, in three broad areas:
Grow the Parish by 50% by 2020.

Create a marketing plan and expand our reach in the community;

Continue to improve and expand newcomer welcoming and integration,
including ways to identify the spiritual gifts of newcomers and invite them into ministry, and
expanding the Shepherd program;
Continue exploring our congregations unique call from God through our Raising the Roof
leadership process, begun last year;
Broaden our donor base and make a financial plan for the future.

Develop and Strengthen the Nativity Community.

Strengthen inreach and develop opportunities for community social interaction, with more
events like the ADVENTure event, dinners in peoples homes, etc.
Expand adult Christian formation opportunities, especially small group and Bible study
opportunities.
Develop lay leadership and participation, including a Ministry Council and lay leadership
training.
Strengthen emotional relationships in the congregation.
Improve communications.
Evaluate our current schedule of service times for the best fit for our parish.

Increase Ministries with Families, Children, and Younger Adults.

Develop community social events for families and younger adults.

Create an after-school or preschool program for Fall 2016, including providing an outdoor
space for children to play.
Consider how to strengthen attendance in childrens Christian formation programs.

Over the next few months, the vestry will be working to implement these goals and make our Church of the
Nativity an even stronger and better congregation, serving Christ and the world, than it is today. Please let me
or any vestry member know if you have suggestions or would like to help!

Small Groups Coming SoonLiving the Resurrected Life

Gods ultimate way of connecting with us is through relationship. In Christ God
has broken through the barriers that exist between creation and Creator as well
as between us and each other. Christs new commandment to the disciples was
this: "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so
you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my
disciples, if you love one another." It is clear that people will know we are
Christ-followers when we love each other the way Jesus does. One way of
learning how to do this is through Small Group gatherings.
Small Groups are a way of building relationships in intentional loving community that help us grow in Christ. It
is a step up from the large Sunday worship gathering to a smaller, closer body of people of similar age or
interests. Ultimately, small groups are a way of living out our purpose, both as individuals and as a collective
group of believersto be the church.
Nativity is preparing an ongoing Small Group Ministry for commencement in the Fall. We need hosts, leaders
and participants. Hosts provide the physical space, facilitators guide and direct the conversation of the
curriculum, and participants are those who gather to study and learn together. The curriculum will be a 7-week
Bible-based study called The
Resurrected Life: Making All
Things New. It is a bible study
which helps us live the new life
God promises us by guiding us in
experiencing it.
If you are drawn toward this
ministry as host, facilitator or
participant please contact Dr.
Wayne
waynewhitney@thenativity.net.
Training sessions for hosts and
facilitators will be over the
Summer.
You can be a part of building up
the body of Christ in nourishing
loving relationship by participation
in a Small Group.

A note from our Music Director

Basso, Claire and Steve Smith, Destiny and

Jeremy Spencer-Treinen.

Don't miss the most

exciting choral event of this
season! On Sunday May
24th at 4 p.m. our Adult
Choir is going to perform
their favorite music
selections. Come join us to
sing tunes by ABBA, Queen,
Leonard Cohen, Jackson 5,
James Taylor, Sting, The
Beatles, and others.
May is always a great month to reflect on the
accomplishments of the music ministry. Our
Adult Choir is taking a summer break in June,
and thus it is good to sum up what they
accomplished this year. They performed pieces
by classical composers like C. Franck, G.F.
Handel, R. Vaughan Williams, J.S. Bach, Ch.
Gounod, C. Saint-Sans, P. I. Tchaikovsky, J.
Stainer and W.A. Mozart, as well as a variety of
pieces from the contemporary Christian and
Gospel repertoire. They invested a lot of time
and work to learn all this music, progressed a lot,
and will continue to explore the vast choral
repertoire next season.
The Adult Choir members this season:
Brenda Burke, Cindy Cohen, Mary Dexter, Joyce
Ditzler, Mark Dobbins, Michael Frongillo,
Cathie Gauntt, Jeff Jameson, Pat Jones, Mark
Miller, Martha Miller, Polly Miller, Mary Ann
and Paul Rank, Suzanne Rovani, Brenda Russell-

Some of our favorite guest musicians came

back this year to bring high quality instrumental
music: volinist Dagmara Suchon Hobbs,
saxophonists Shea Marshall, Ryan Bledsoe,
Julian Peterson, clarinetists Tim Haas and Josh
Bennet, and trumpet player Tim McCarthy. Our
very special Nativity musicians are Ann Phillips,
who regularly plays the Native American Flute
during the Communion time at our 9.30 a.m.
services, and Alastair Longley-Cook who plays
his guitars on Sundays, and leads a Gospel music
sing-along at the Vi Silverstone once a month.
We are very fortunate to have two leading
singers: mezzosoprano Suzanne Rovani and
tenor Michael Frongillo. They have been a
tremendous asset to our choir - their expertise,
talents and wonderful voices made our choir
sound more beautiful. Unfortunately Suzanne is
leaving us this year - she is moving to Chicago
for good. She is one of the best singers I had an
opportunity to work with, and thus this is a sad
news for us. Suzanne is making an important
step in her career this way, and we wish her all
the best! We will miss her terribly. Her last
Sunday will be May 24th, so please take time to
wish her all the best on her leave and thank her
for the wonderful music she brought to us.

Fun Choir Concert on Sunday, May 24th at 4 p.m.

Don't miss the most exciting choral event of this season! On Sunday May 24th at
4 p.m. our Adult Choir is going to perform their favorite music selections. Come
join us to sing tunes by ABBA, Queen, Leonard Cohen, Jackson 5, James Taylor,

Our Music Director Performing In Poland This Summer

This summer I am going to Poland to play a few recitals and record an album of classical music on a newly
restored organ from 1719. This recording will be a collection of my favorite pieces of organ repertoire by
composers that lived and worked around the time and geographical area in which this organ was made, and which
you often hear me play in our church: Bach, Buxtehude, Mendelssohn, etc. Since recording an album requires
resources I created a "kickstarter campaign" to help finance it. Check out the video and all the details here: https://
www.kickstarter.com/projects/310771236/1719-hildebrandt-organ-recording I hope you will get as excited about
this project as I am!

New Al-Anon Family Group Meetings coming to Nativity!

Al-Anon is a group of caring individuals who share their experiences, strength and hope with others who are
affected and seeking help with problems connected to their alcoholic loved ones. Al-Anon's sole purpose is to help
anyone whose life is or has been adversely affected by a friend or family member's drinking. Weekly meetings
will be starting at Nativity in June, so please spread the word to our Community. Further details to come!

Outreach Updates
Mission Trip to Navajoland, By Bill Worthington

On April 23rd a group of seven volunteers went to Navajoland to build a wheelchair ramp for Tyanna, a young girl on
the Reservation. We left Phoenix with some trepidation as the weather forecast said up to a 60% chance of rain. After
the five-hour drive north, we immediately took advantage of the clear skies and got started putting up skirting around
their trailer and laying out the deck and ramp. We worked for a few hours and as we were leaving Henry, Tyannas
grandfather, joked he was going to do a rain dance; we all responded rather loudlynoooo! He sat and chuckled as
we left. We returned home for a hearty chili dinner cooked by Tom Bleasdale. Being the caring guy he is, he made
both hot and wussy versions of his famous chili.
The next day we were at the work site at 8 am (7 am Phoenix time) and got right to it. At lunch we had a deserved
break and enjoyed delicious chicken parm. and salad made by Cotty Peabody. And of course the sweet-tooths werent
forgotten on this trip; we had homemade brownies and Maryanns yummy chocolate biscotti.
Our final workday we woke to cloudy skies that didnt look promising; all day we were checking the skies above.
Rita and Henry, Tyannas grandparents, invited us to their octagon for a lunch of Navajo tacos to say thank you for our
hard work. As the group arrived, Rita was still making the fry bread and everyone enjoyed watching this tradition.
The tacos were tasty and fresh and the meal was shared with the whole family: Rita and Henry, their daughter Leecita
and her children, Tykrell, Rendell aka Bubba and Tyanna. Tyanna wheeled around the octagon helping to make and
serve lunch; she is a bright and happy girl who loves school and taking care of her two younger brothers. Each day
Rita and Henry and one of the boys would visit, watch us work on the project or lend a helping hand. It gave us a
little time to learn about the family; Henry shared how
happy he was that soon all of his 9 kids would be living in
Az. and Rita shared how happy she was that both she and
Leecita had found jobs at Gouldings Lodge.
The project was completed around 4 pm on Saturday. We
had built a 6 ft. deck, 24 ft. ramp and stairs all with
handrails; it was exactly what the family needed. With
hugs and handshakes we said goodbye to the family and
as we drove away the skies opened up with a burst of rain.
We then went to tour St. Marys of the Moonlight
Episcopal Church, which is nearby. We also toured the
Hogan, which has been on the church property since
1962. Once we arrived back at the hotel the winds
whipped up and it started to rain. It rained off and on all
night and we had periods of rain the whole way home, but
we were blessed with dry skies on our workdays and that
made our whole trip perfect. It was a great trip with lots
of laughter and sore muscles, plus the extra special bonus
of helping make a young girls life on the Reservation a
little easier. Nativitys Outreach fund, generous Nativity
Angels plus volunteers: Paul Jensen, Mary Ann and
Paul Rank, Bill Worthington (all from Nativity), Stephen
and Matthew Cates and Patti Worthington made this
project possible.

Navajoland, By Paul Rank

Monument Valley is a marvelous collection of natural rock formations on
the border of Utah and Arizona located within the Navajo Reservation.
Their natural beauty is something to behold, especially as the sun casts
changing shadows throughout the day.
Mary Ann and I had the pleasure of being in the midst of this beauty as
we joined a Nativity mission team to the Navajoland Area Mission of the
Episcopal Church. In contrast to the outstanding hotel The View which
overlooks the valley, our task was to build a ramp for Tyanna, a young girl
who is paralyzed below her waist, so that she could have easy access to
her home, which by the way had no running water or electricity and was
reached by traveling a few miles on a road that would make any washboard proud. We were all happy to hear that Tyanna
was overjoyed with the results and was maneuvering up and down the ramp in her wheelchair without any problems,
except for her younger brother who also thinks it is a cool place to ride his bike.
In gratitude for our efforts, we were treated to homemade Navajo fry bread tacos for Saturday lunch. They were
great!
Tyanna and her family are members of St. Marys of the Moonlight Episcopal church. The church had made our
team aware of her need. This is a continuation of the partnership between Nativity and St. Marys and also part of a larger
endeavor of The Episcopal Church to support the Navajo people. It was interesting to find out that a number of parishes
from my previous diocese in southern Ohio have been sending mission teams to not only Navajoland, but to St. Marys of
the Moonlight.
Since I have been retired, I have gone on numerous mission trips to Appalachia, Honduras, and now Navajoland.
For me it is a way of affirming my baptismal covenant to seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as
yourself. Certainly these
experiences have
opened my eyes to the
dire poverty that far too
many people live in
throughout the world.
But they have also
showed me that true
happiness is not based
on financial wealth but
on the willingness to let
Gods love act within
you. I have seen this in
the families of
Appalachia, in the
children and staff of a
school and orphanage in
Honduras, in the church
family of St. Marys of
the Moonlight, and in
all the mission teams
that have ventured out
of their comfort zone.

Participate in a Painting Ministry with our Sister Church!

There's a great service opportunity for all on Saturday, May 23, at our sister church, Iglesia Santa Maria, in west
Phoenix. They own a small house across the street from the church that they have fixed up to use as a ministry center
and after-school tutoring center for neighborhood children. The last step in the fix-up process is to paint the outside of
the house. This is Nativity's opportunity to do some great service work side-by-side with our brothers and sisters in
Christ! Join these great people and your Nativity friends on Saturday, May 23. Wear old clothes and closed-toe shoes.
Equipment will be provided! Meet at Nativity at 7 a.m., and we'll drive over together, or meet anytime during the day
at the church, 6501 North 39th Avenue, Phoenix, 85019. For more information, please contact Don Balint at

Santa Maria Food Bank Welcomes Volunteers

Our sister church, Santa Maria Phoenix, runs a food bank for the community the third Saturday of each month.
Volunteers are always welcome to organize and give away food. Please contact Don for the next work date. Arrive
by 9 am and report to Rev. Carmen to get your assignment. The church is at 6533 W. 39th Ave, Phoenix 85019. It's a
fun and rewarding ministry! For more information, please contact Don Balint at dhbalint1@cox.net.

Serving Others, Giving of Yourself

The Church of the Nativity Outreach Committee has defined its mission "To inspire and equip every member of
Nativity to participate in ministries that touch those in need. To be successful we need you to join us. We need
people with communication and marketing skills to get the word out about the ministries we are involved in. We
need people with ideas for forums that would be valuable to our community and to help organize them. And we also
would encourage any parishioner interested in outreach to join us. The committees next meeting is on Tuesday
June 2 at 6:15pm in the parish hall. If you are interested, give Sarah Banks a call (480-204-1732) or just show up.

Kids Carnival A Success

Save the Familys Abused Womens Shelter was full of
activity on Saturday, April 18th. There were babies, toddlers
and teens that enjoyed games, prizes and cupcakes. The big
hits were the egg hunt for the little ones, the water balloon
toss for the older kids and loved by all, the face painting by
Nancy Bleasdale. There were smiles all aroundvolunteers,
moms and kids alike. Tami, the director at the shelter, said
our carnival was her all-time favorite event, because it was
laid-back fun and we all just enjoyed each others company.
She said everyone there is looking forward to another event
in the fall. We are planning another carnival sometime
around Halloween, more details to follow. Again thanks to
those who helped make this a successful event. Everyone
who attended is eager to do it again and we hope next time
that you will join us.
The group pictures was all the volunteers we took with us to
help at the carnival--we did have some non-Nativity people
with us. And the other is during the carnival.

Nativity Outreach Updates

Mothers Day Purse Project

WOW!!! Nativity outdid itselfour first
annual Mothers Day Purse Project was a
huge success. It was an amazing
outpouring of love for deserving moms at
Save the Familys Domestic Violence
Shelter and their transitional center in
Mesa. You donated over 170 purses and
enough stuffers to fill over 100 bags. The
volunteers were careful to make the
stuffers for the 14 moms at the DV shelter
extra special. They received full-sized
shampoo, conditioner, lotion, body gel
and deodorant. The moms also received a bag filled with smaller goodies, two scarves, plus a necklace, bracelet and
earrings. The 100+ bags were stuffed with a goody bag of travel-sized items, a scarf and one piece of jewelry. These bags
were delivered for the transitional program and were given to current residents and recent graduates. The staff also selected
purses to keep in their Reward Closet; when ladies have gotten their first job or a promotion they will receive a new purse.
Thank you all for your help and your wonderful donations. This project has been an overwhelming success and obviously,
one that has touched all of Nativity. We feel it is extra special and is a project that will definitely happen every year, so let
the collecting begin!!!

Purse Project Party

On Saturday, May 9th, volunteers from Nativity and others went to the Domestic
Violence shelter for the purse party and cookout. We set up 50 purses for the kids in a
separate room, plus gift bags filled with stuffers, makeup bags and wallets. Each set of
kids would come in, one family at a time, and choose a purse and scarves for their
mom. While each family was choosing, the rest of the kids were making Mothers Day
cards and tissue paper flowers for their moms. One teenage girl was so overwhelmed
that she had to control her tears as she was selecting a purse. It was a very moving day
for the volunteers.
Once selection was done, we had a great lunch of hamburgers and hotdogs grilled by
Chefs Tom Bleasdale and Bob Ringdahl. Dessert was an ice cream cone with a choice
of four flavors. All the kids and moms enjoyed their meals.
Our plan was to have the kids take their gift bags home and give the presents to their
moms on Mothers Day morning, but the kids didnt want to wait, they were way too
excited. We were so glad that the kids didnt listen to us, because we got the reward of
seeing the moms open their gifts too. Each family took time looking at all of the

surprises in the bags and kids put the jewelry on their moms. After some time the
moms got up and modeled their purses and scarves for each other and shared their
excitement over how each set of kids made the perfect choice for their mom.
On a sad note, Tami, the director, shared with us that one mom had just been told her
breast cancer had returned, stage 4 and incurable. She has a 14-year-old daughter and a
10-year-old son who captured all of our hearts when we were there for the kids
carnival; he is the sweetest boy. We made sure that they got to choose a purse first and
they took extra time when selecting the scarves. At the end of the party as we were
leaving, the daughter was wrapping a scarf around her moms head to show her how
perfect it would be for when she loses her hair from the chemo and radiation
treatments. It was a blessing that we could help make this Mothers Day extra special
for this family.
It was a fun and heart-warming day. We all felt very blessed to be there for such a joyous celebration. Thank you to
everyone who made this day possible.

P.S. For those of you who would like to help the mom battling breast cancer. Her daughter will be 15 in November and
she would like to have a small quinceanera for her. We will be helping with the party and need volunteers, plus financial
assistance. If you are interested in helping, please contact Barbara Worthington 480-575-7830 bandb718@msn.com

$35 fee for 9:00-12:00 VBS
$130 fee for before and after care 7:30 - 6:00
Join us this year at G-Force VBS where kids will explore
how to put their faith into action. In this mission-focused
program, kids will experience Gods unstoppable love and discover how to fuel up and move in and through life with God. We will
watch the G-Force meter climb illustrating how God is at work around the world and how Gods people are on the move.
The whole camp is inspired and based on the Bible verse Acts 17:28a, "In God we live, move and have our being." A life with God is
one of movement!
To Register, please go to nativityscottsdale.org pull down the "gather" tab and go to the "forms" section, or use the form below.
There are TWO forms - one for VBS registration and one for Before and after care with VBS! I also have hard copies of the
registration forms. See me for one on Sunday! Please remember that your spot is not secured until you also pay for it.

Sunday School is on hiatus for the summer months. Remember that Children's Chapel
during the 9;30 am service continues during the summer!
Be watching for
new children's
bags to be
used during
services.
These bags
are important,
not only to
keep wiggly
children less
restless, but
also because it helps them learn
what we are doing in service. Many wiggly
children actually learn better and listen
better to what is going on in church if their
hands are busy! We will be stuffing these
bags with crayons or washable markers and
children's activity pages that follow the
lectionary. Thank you to Lani Sambach for
offering to maintain these bags! Thank you
to Steve Smith for designing the art work!

Thank you to everyone who supported

the youth group in their fundraising
efforts this year. We raised enough
that all the youth group members
who want to go on Mission Trip
can! Thank you especially to our
Mission Trip Angels who
matched all our fundraising
efforts in 2015!

Youth group meetings on Sundays will be on hiatus during the summer months! Stay
active by going to Chapel Rock (go to Chapelrock.net to register for Week 1 - June 7 18 and be sure to write in that you want to be in a cabin with kids from Nativity!) Week
- June 14 - 20 will be very fun too if you can't join the whole group on week 1.
Remember to turn in all your registration forms for Mission Trip. I must have those
ASAP if you are going to attend!
The youth Group will be collecting School supplies during the month of June to take as a
"community gift" for the group we will be serving at our Mission Trip. If you'd like to
participate, please put back packs, note book paper, pencils, pens, notebooks and binders
in the box you will find in the parish hall!

Youth group
members
interested in
helping with VBS
and who will be in
town the week of
July 20 - 24 please
contact me asap so
we can talk about
your role! It is a
great way to help
the church and
interact with the
younger members
as well as get
service credits!

We are so excited to announce Dylan

Montanez and Darylle Garcia have graciously joined
out youth group leadership team! I know that the
youth group kids feel so special to have them join our
dedicated group of leaders (Drake
