convergenceinmeasure,smoothconvergence,orconvergenceoncompactsubsets,arenotcapturedbyanorm
topology,andsoitisusefultohaveamoregeneraltheoryoftopologicalvectorspacesthatcontainsthese
modes.Anotherreason(ofparticularimportanceinPDE)isthatthenormtopologyoninfinitedimensional
spacesissostrongthatveryfewsetsarecompactorprecompactinthesetopologies,makingitdifficultto
applycompactnessmethodsinthesetopologies.Instead,oneoftenfirstworksinaweakertopology,inwhich
compactnessiseasiertoestablish,andthensomehowupgradesanyweaklyconvergentsequencesobtainedvia
compactnesstostrongermodesofconvergence(oralternatively,oneabandonsstrongconvergenceandexploits
theweakconvergencedirectly).Twobasicweaktopologiesforthispurposearetheweaktopologyonanormed
vectorspace ,andtheweak*topologyonadualvectorspace .Compactnessinthelattertopologyis
usuallyobtainedfromtheBanachAlaoglutheorem(anditssequentialcounterpart),whichwillbeaquick

Thestrongandweaktopologiesonnormedvectorspacesalsohaveanaloguesforthespace
