In the year 1980, Candis E. Krummel (the co-founder of the

Association) had the idea to preserve the art of weaving. She
asked me, Do you want to work with textiles? From that
point, the idea grew, and together we began to plan how to
preserve our heritage, our culture, and the art of backstrap
weaving, before it all disappeared.
To this end, we brought together artisans from the
community. Elena Sojuel Mendoza was one of the pioneers,
and worked hard to make the first prototypes of our products.
At first, we were faced with many difficulties. When the
political unrest began, we could not hold association
meetings because if we did, we would be accused of
planning illegal activities and plotting against the military
stationed in town.
Despite these hardships, the Association continued to move
forward supporting artisans in times of adversity. Today, we
are able to work in peace. I have dedicated 35 years to the
Association to date, and I am very proud to see the advances
that we have achieved in the past year. Now we have a
strong internet presence and we are attracting clients from
many countries. I feel very satisfied that we can support our
artisans in many ways, such as through our sustainable
cookstove project, which has grown significantly in 2014. My
goal for the future is that the Association continues to grow
and to support the artisans of Santiago Atitln.

Desde el ao 1980 le ocurri a Candis E. Krummel (la cofundadora de la Asociacin) la idea de preservar el arte de
tejer. Me pregunt, Quieres trabajar con textiles? Desde ah
la idea creci, y juntos empezamos a planificar como preservar
el patrimonio, la cultura, y el arte de tejer antes de que todo
desapareciera.
As reunimos a las artesanas. Elena Sojuel Mendoza era una de
las pioneras, y trabaj duro para hacer las primeras muestras
de nuestros productos. Al principio, nos enfrentaron muchas
dificultades. Cuando surgieron problemas polticos, no nos
podamos hacer reuniones de trabajo porque se acusaban de
que estaba discutiendo temas en contra del derecho y en
contra de los ejrcitos vigilando en el pueblo.
A pesar de las dificultades, la Asociacin segua adelante,
apoyando a las artesanas en tiempos de adversidad. Hoy
estamos trabajando con tranquilidad. Yo he dedicado 35 aos
a la Asociacin hasta la fecha, y me siento muy orgullosa ver
los avances que hemos logrado el ao pasado. Ahora,
tenemos una presencia fuerte en el internet y estamos
captando clientes de muchos pases. Me siento satisfecho de
que ofrecemos apoyo a las asociadas, como el programa de
estufas sostenibles, que ha crecido muchsimo en el ao 2014.
Mi meta es hacer crecer la Asociacin y seguir apoyando a los
artesanos de Santiago Atitln.

What We Do | Lo Que Hacemos

The Cojolya Association of Maya Women Weavers is a
nonprofit association in the Lake Atitln town of Santiago.
For 30 years Cojolya has been dedicated to preserving
the ancient Mayan art of backstrap-loom weaving as a
viable economic enterprise for women who weave. Using
traditional techniques and designs, woven textiles are
made into designer fashion accessories. Cojolya provides
its producers with materials, training, design services, and
access to an international market of buyers. A proud
member of the World Fair Trade Organization, Cojolya
ensures that all its weavers earn a fair living wage on par
with entry-level professionals in Santiago Atitln. Cojolya is
dedicated to preserving the art of backstrap weaving
and to empowering our weavers and the community of
Santiago Atitln. Furthermore, we place carbon-reducing
ONIL cookstoves in the homes of our weavers and
community
members,
replacing
unhealthy
and
potentially dangerous open kitchen hearths and reducing
rates of deforestation.

La Asociacin Cojolya de Tejedoras Mayas es una

asociacin sin fines de lucro ubicada en el pueblo de
Santiago en las orillas del Lago Atitln. Por 30 aos,
Cojolya se ha dedicado a preservar el arte antiguo de
tejer en telar de cintura como un trabajo viable para las
tejedoras. Usando tcnicas y diseos tradicionales, las
telas se convierten en accesorios de moda. Cojolya
proporciona a sus productores materia prima,

The Cojolya Association seeks to preserve the Mayan art of backstrap

weaving as a viable enterprise, to empower our producers by providing them
with an independent income source and professional development training,
and to contribute to community health and development through our social
programs. For many artisans and their families, Cojolya has not only provided an
income source but has also allowed artisans to hone their craft and expand
their business opportunities through our professional development program. As
master weaver Mara Sosof Ixbaln relates, I now operate a small textile shop in
my home. The Association taught me how to manage my money, how to use it
well instead of spending it. Weaver and warper Andrea Mesa Sisay adds, The
trainings have helped us a lot, and it was thanks to these trainings that I learned
the warping process.
In addition to providing our weavers with a steady income source and
technical training, we also seek to provide our artisans with opportunities for
enrichment and personal development. For example, on December 9th, 2014,
the Cojolya Association culminated several months of fundraising in a successful
trip to the Ixchel Museum of Indigenous Textiles in Guatemala City, so that our
artisans could see how their textile tradition is esteemed the world over.
Donations to Cojolya go toward an emergency fund for Association families
in need of assistance. Families facing difficult circumstances, from an
unexpected medical bill to a hurricane, know they can count on Cojolya for
support.

Sicay Mesa agrega, Las capacitaciones nos han orientado mucho, y fue
gracias a estas capacitaciones aprend a como urdir los hilos.
Adems de proporcionarles a nuestros artesanos una fuente de ingresos y

darles
oportunidades
para
enriquecimiento y desarrollo personal. Por ejemplo, el 9 de diciembre de 2014
la Asociacin Cojolya culmin una campaa exitosa de recaudacin de

New Workshop|Nueva Bodega: Cojolya is growing! In addition to our existing workshop, office,
shop, and museum, we are now proud renters of a second storefront that will serve as storage for our
raw materials, a product photography studio, and a sewing workshop. Cojolya va creciendo!

New Staff | Nuevo Personal: In 2014, we welcomed Cline Gaiardo, Katie Sullivan, and Miguel Ca
Ajuchan to the Association. In addition, we began a partnership with Princeton in Latin America,
which connects U.S. recent graduates with nonprofit organizations in Latin America for yearlong

During 2014, the number of Tzutujil Maya artisans earning a fair living
wage through membership in the Cojolya Association has grown from
30 artisans at the end of 2013 to 39 artisans at the end of 2014. Durante

In 2013, we jointly paid our artisans a total of Q54,177.70 over the

course of the year. This quantity more than doubled in 2014, when
we paid out a total of Q119,997.78 to our artisans. En el ao 2013,

Cojolya Social installed 160 ONIL sustainable cookstoves in 2013 in

order to reduce smoke inhalation within households and deforestation
around Lake Atitln. In 2014, we nearly doubled this quantity, installing
a total of 266 stoves. En 2013, Cojolya Social instal 160 estufas

With the support of FUNDAP, we held 2 professional development

training sessions for our artisans in 2013. In 2014, we were able to hold
10 sessions, two of which taught technical sewing and dyeing skills and
eight of which focused on business and communication skills. Con el

Growth Opportunities

Over the course of 2014, the Cojolya Association has
demonstrated significant growth across its program
areas. However, we have identified areas in which
we can grow even stronger during the coming year.
In our 2013 Annual Report, we discussed the findings
of a complete socioeconomic study of our artisan
households, conducted by Jos Agustn Chivili of
FUNDAP for the Cojolya Association. By offering eight
additional trainings per year, we have fulfilled last
years stated need for additional technical skills
development. However, we have noted that a core
group of artisans tend to participate consistently in
our trainings, whereas another subset of our weavers
do not routinely take advantage of the professional
development opportunities we offer.

crecimiento significativo entre todas sus reas
programticas. Sin embargo, hemos identificado

Our goal, therefore, for 2015 is to better publicize the

trainings that we offer and to Increase participation
in trainings to the point that all of our members are
regularly participating. In addition, we plan to build
upon our exploration of new funding opportunities, as
our recent growth makes supporting all of our
programs on the sales of our fair trade products
alone less feasible. In 2014, we used the online
crowdfunding platform Indiegogo to raise more than
$1,000 to take our weavers on an enriching holiday
trip to the Ixchel Museum of Indigenous Textiles. In
2015, we plan to expand our funding through
crowdfunding as well as by applying for grant
funding from outside sources. By diversifying our
income stream beyond sales revenue, we hope to
provide even more resources and opportunities for
our artisans and community.

Sustainable Cookstove Project

Proyecto Estufas Sostenibles
Cojolya places the well-being, health, and
economic and personal development of its members
first and foremost. Since 2003, Cojolya Socials ONIL
stove project has improved the health of Lake Atitln
communities, one family at a time. We purchase
ONIL stoves from HELPS International Guatemala and
install them in the homes of our artisans and
community members, thereby reducing the burns
and pulmonary health problems that result from
cooking over an open fire. Furthermore, since ONIL
stoves use 70% less firewood than the traditional
three-stone hearth, they also reduce rates of
deforestation of our mountainsides and reduce
household energy expenditures. In 2014, we installed
266 ONIL stoves, a 60% increase from 2013, bringing
us to a total of 1,151 stoves in the Lake Atitln basin.
We have also educated all recipients on the stoves
proper use. Due to increased community demand
for stove installations, our installer and environmental
educator have had to become more efficient and
create an installation plan to handle the growing
waiting list. The months with the most installations
were March, April, July, and September, with 32, 32,
36, and 30 installations, respectively, while November
and December were our slowest installation months.
We also hired Manuel Ca Ajuchan, a new stove
installer, who has proven very capable of installing
stoves in both Santiago Atitln and Panajachel. Our
stoves are subsidized by private donations as well as
generous support from Journey Latin America and
the Healing the Rainbow Foundation.

Cojolya valora el bienestar, la salud, y el desarrollo

econmico y personal de nuestros asociados sobre

Education and Training

Educacin y Capacitacin
This year, with the generous support of FUNDAP
(Fundacin para el Desarrollo), we were able to
offer our artisans a total of ten professional
development training sessions. Two of our trainings
focused on technical skills. The first technical
training taught our weavers the jaspe, or ikat, dye
process that is commonly practiced in Santiago
Atitln. Since jaspe dyers are relatively few and the
process is intricate, jaspe pieces fetch a high price.
Learning the jaspe process, therefore, is a way for
the weavers to diversify their skills and increase
their income. We received a generous donation of
three industrial sewing machines from FUNDAP this
summer, so our second technical training focused
on sewing machine skills. Though the focus of this
training was making our tailors feel comfortable
working on the new industrial machines, several of
our weavers signed up for the training as well,
even though sewing is typically a profession held
by men in Santiago Atitln. The eight remaining
professional development sessions we held in 2014
focused on business and communications skills. In
order to strengthen the group identity of the
Cojolya Associations artisans, we spent one
training session discussing the responsibilities and
privileges that come with being a part of an
Association.

telas jaspeadas se venden a precios altos. Por eso,
aprender el proceso de jaspe es una manera en que
las tejedoras pueden diversificar sus habilidades y

Volunteers and Staff

Voluntarios y Personal
This year, we welcomed three new full-time staff members to the
Cojolya Association: Manuel Ca Ajuchan, our Cojolya Social
stove installer; Katie Sullivan, our Princeton in Latin America fellow;
and Cline Gaiardo, our volunteer textile designer. They are all
excited to contribute to the growth and expansion of the Cojolya
Association.
We also greatly appreciate the assistance of our volunteers, who
donate their time and talents in order to help advance the goals
of the Association. Lia De Biasi, hailing from the United States, spent
three weeks with us in June sharing her knowledge of marketing
and social media and creating a yearly social media plan. Chris
Rose, also from the United States, assisted us during the fall with
reorganizing our online shop listings and providing technical
support for our website. Finally, Karin Bergstresser, a former Cojolya
staffer from Sweden, lent us support throughout the year by
revising publications and sharing her considerable knowledge of
fair trade marketing techniques. Many thanks to all of our
wonderful volunteers!

Durante el ao pasado, dimos la bienvenida a tres empleados

nuevos a tiempo completo en la Asociacin Cojolya: Manuel Ca
Ajuchan, nuestro instalador de estufas sostenibles; Katie Sullivan,
nuestra socia de Princeton in Latin America; y Cline Gaiardo,
nuestra diseadora voluntaria de textiles. Todos ellos se sientan
felices de contribuir al crecimiento y la expansin de la Asociacin
Cojolya.
De manera adicional, agradecemos mucho el apoyo de nuestros
voluntarios, que han donado su tiempo y sus talentos para que la
Asociacin siga adelante. Lia De Biasi, de los Estados Unidos, pas
tres semanas con nosotros en el mes de junio para compartir su
conocimiento sobre marketing y medios sociales. Adems, ella
crey un plan anual de medios sociales para la Asociacin. Chris
