PROGRAM SPEAKER: Mark von Hoetzendorff

Dougherty Valley Rotary would like to thank Mark for giving an inspirational and unforgettable
presentation on his experiences in the Polio Plus Program in Africa!
Mark has spent over 25 years being part of Rotary International, during which he achieved many
things. Mark served as President of the San Ramon Rotary (1994-1995), District Governor
(2002-2003), an Instructor at PETS (President Elect Training), along with much more! Mark
has just returned in January from Mexico where he delivered 650 wheelchairs! Mark’s
presentation opened our eyes to the environment in Africa, and the existing and obvious need
for help and assistance in eradicating polio
among the youth. He also shared stories and
provided visuals, which allowed us to picture
and feel the bonds and relationships he built
with the people
there. Mark also
found his home
away from home
when Rotarians
in Africa
welcomed Mark
into their humble
abodes!

NEXT WEEK we will be holding our meeting at the San Ramon Community Center, and

lifetime opportunity! Social time will be at 5:15pm, and the meeting will begin at 5:40pm

DID YOU KNOW?

As of December 31, 2009, Rotarians have raised approximately $107 million for the $200
Million Challenge. These contributions will help Rotary raise $200 million to match $355
million in challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The resulting
$555 million will directly support immunization campaigns in developing countries, where polio
continues to infect and paralyze children, robbing them of their futures and compounding the
hardships faced by their families. (taken from the Rotary International website). Donate now at
http://rotary.org/en/ServiceAndFellowship/Polio/Announcements/Pages/10jan29_annc_polio
_contributions.aspx, and click the red “Donate Now” button.

FUN FACT
In the United States, 180 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually, making
Valentine’s Day the second-most popular greeting-card-giving occasion (following Christmas
with 1.8 billion cards exchanged annually in the US).
