Maybe a teams lack of

becomes apparent and they
are unable to sustain a winning streak. Or its possible
that the veteran players on

their responsibilities and
the program as a whole
suffers as a result.

progresses. The Hillbillies
are playing at its best with
the
playoffs
quickly
approaching, having won
nine of their first 11 games.
While there are many
contributing factors to the
Hillbillies success, at the
top of the list is the dedication and maturity displayed
by the captains on the team
Olivia Feiger, Paige Ferrell
and Caroline Chivily, all of
whom are members of the
senior class.
Angela Salisbury, the
head coach for Verona,
feels that the trio was the
correct selections for such

important roles because of

the commitment they have
shown to the program over
the past several years.
They each came into
the season with three years
of varsity softball experience, Salisbury said.
They always lead by
example, both during the
school day and on the softball field. All three are
admired and respected by
their teammates.
Salisbury mentioned
some of the significant statistics that the captains
have produced through the
first three weeks of AprilChivily a .481 batting
average, Feiger a .467 batting average and Ferrell a
6-2 pitching record with a
2.042 earned run average.
They have improved in
all areas of softball but
have also improved as
leaders, Salisbury said.
[They have] gained confidence and are the gobetween for coaches to
players.
All three seniors are

They push their teammates to do their best, stay
focused and put the team
ahead of the individual,
Salisbury said.
After losing the opening
game of the regular season
to Cedar Grove, the
Hillbillies responded by
reeling off four consecutive wins by an average of
just over eight runs per
game. After a one-run loss
to Caldwell, Verona went
on a five-game winning
streak to conclude the
month of April, this time
by an average of six runs

the
Hillbillies advanced to the

where they were defeated
in the opening round by

Verona is scheduled to
complete the regular season with a road game at
Morris Catholic on Wed.,
May 13. The cutoff date
for teams to qualify for the

Sectional
Tournaments was May 9
and the bracket seedings
take place on May 12.

Master Storyteller/Rabbi To Present

Two-Part Series

abbi Mark Biller,

spiritual leader of
Congregation Beth
Ahm in Verona, will lead a
provocative, free, two-part
series titled "The Modern
Employment Test: And
Judaism Is the Applicant,"
on Tues., June 9 and June

Library
in
Whippany. The series is
coordinated by National
Council of Jewish Women,
West Morris Section's Our
Jewish World, chaired by
Ellen Nesson and Melanie
Levitan,

Imagine Judaism itself
applying for a job. The rabbi
will touch on a variety of
issues relating to this scenario such as how does
Judaism fit into the corporate culture; how to characterize the Torah's personality
type, rigid, open-ended or

flexible, Outgoing or innerdirected; how well does

Judaism help us handle the
tasks of modern living?
"Come explore this
unusual perspective, share
your own views, and
become familiar with some
pivotal biblical texts touching on these questions," says
Biller.
Biller's third year participating in the Our Jewish
World lecture series, he is a
master storyteller, thoroughly enjoys teaching these
classes and brings a fresh,
bright outlook to Judaism's
traditional texts.
Biller specializes in
counseling Jews of all ritual
levels looking to find meaning in both modern life and
rich Jewish traditions. The
spiritual leader of synagogues in his native Canada,
as well as in Alabama, New

Verona Schools Visit The Renaissance

.N. Brown and Laning Elementary students were treated to an indoor performance of Renaissance Revisited as part of
the Renaissance Faire festivities at F.N.
Browns auditorium on Thurs., April 16. The
story is about a modern day girl getting lost in
time and having an adventure as she gets back
to the present.
The Medieval theme was tied in with this
years book, Kenny and The Dragon (by Tony
DiTerlizzi) for One District, One Book-a program which all Verona Elementary students
read a chapter every night and participated in a
daily blog. The Renaissance Faire was also
performed at Forest Elementary with
Brookdale Elementary school present on Fri.,
April 17.
One District, One Book was made possible
through the generous efforts of Corisa Walker
and Katey McAuliffe, Verona elementary
media specialists, on receiving the largest grant
awarded
by the VFEE (Verona Foundation for
Silly Swordsmen- Lords of Adventure, a comedic swordsman duo, gave a

Local Woman Wins Big On Wheel Of Fortune

By Anastasia Marchese
ots of people enjoy watching "Wheel of Fortune"
on television and imagining what it would be like
to walk away the big winner. Now, Lisa Joseph of
West Orange doesn't have to imagine anymore.
Last December she flew out to California where the
show is filmed in studio. The air date was Feb. 24 of this
year and millions of people watched as she wheeled her
way to the bonus round and then won it.
This 26-year-old hadn't planned on doing this, it started out as kind of a whim.
"Well first I just signed up online, the Wheel Watchers
Club. Then I got this random email telling me that they
were having auditions in New York and asking if I'd want
to try out," said Lisa. She decided to go for it. First she had
to send in a one minute audition video online. Then she
received a live audition in NYC. When asked what the
auditions were like she said "You do a couple of rounds
like it would be on the show. They are looking to see if
you watch the show and know the rules. Since I watch the
show, it was pretty easy for me."
Lisa also does acting on the side, between her other two
jobs, so that helped her to be comfortable and at ease. She
has a very friendly and likable demeanor which must have
come through at the tryouts, because a little while later she
received an email and a letter asking her to be on the show.

She couldn't do her original show date however

because it conflicted with a local stage production that she
was appearing in, so they rescheduled her for Dec. 19.
Since it was so near to Christmas it was hard to find someone to travel with her, so Lisa decided to go out to
California by herself. She wasn't set on winning.
"To get on the show was a blessing," she said. "I just
wanted not to embarrass my mother and to win just one
puzzle. It was an amazing, amazing experience. Pat and
Vanna are great." They gave them pep talks between the
rounds so during those commercial breaks, the contestants
don't just stand around looking awkward.
"I didn't do anything crazy to prepare," said Lisa. She
read articles by former contestants, played an app on her
phone and watched the show every night. "I am a bartender at the Outback, and everyone knew that at 7:30
p.m. every TV was turned to the show," she remembers,
laughing.
She had hopes to get a puzzle in the Food and Drink
category, knowing she would be able to ace a puzzle in her
profession. Not only is she a bartender, but she is also an
events coordinator for pharmaceutical companies. It
ended up being a puzzle in the Food and Drink category
which she won for $36,000 that put her into the Bonus
round.

Local Woman Wins Big...

continued from page 5

For her bonus round she had some help
from an article that she read shortly before
she appeared on the show. This article suggested picking letters "that I never would
have thought to pick." she remembers. If
she hadn't read that article and taken the
advice, she thinks she might not have won
the bonus round.
All in all she finished the night with
more than $72,000 in cash prizes, a trip to
Portugal, and a $1,000 gift card for
Travelsmith.
It takes a while to receive the prizes, so

Lisa is planning wisely how to spend her

winnings.
Some of her prize money she wants to
donate to HUSU (Help Us Save Us) a
charitable organization that works in Haiti.
Her family roots are in Haiti and she wants
to give back out of her unexpected gains.
As a result of winning, she will now not
only be giving money, but going to Haiti
herself as a volunteer.
For now she is still working and acting,
making plans for the future and looking
forward to taking her mom to Portugal
sometime soon.

Taste Buds Bloom With Variety Offered At Farmers Markets

selection of annuals and perennials to plant. Spring offerings turn to summer offerings delivering a wide variety of
flavorful, colorful sweet fruits and ample vegetables.
Summer farmers markets are a great way to spend a
weekend afternoon or lazy evening after a day at work.
Summer is when produce such as tomatoes, sweet corn and
cucumbers are grown and enjoyed in abundance. As the
summer ends, fall is a beautiful time of year. The
air is crisp and local farm stands are brimming with
autumn goodies from pumpkins to root vegetables, cider,
hay rides and corn mazes. Hearty prepared meals, holiday
pies, hand knit sweaters and seasonal wreaths are alongside
mums, corn stalks and hay barrels used to decorate our
homes.
As the winter approaches, dont discount the selection at
your local outdoor markets. Beets, broccoli, brussel sprouts,
cabbage and cauliflower are grown most of the year, even
through November and December. Its a great time to stock
up on homemade jams, jellies and local honey. Think gift
giving for the holidays. Most farmers markets stay open
until December and will additionally offer fresh cut greenery and Christmas trees.
Most fruits and vegetables travel 1500-2500 miles to
land in the grocery store. If each consumer ate just one meal
a week using local products, we would save 1.1 million barrels of oil each year. Visits to local farmers markets are
increasing for a variety of reasons- its healthier, its impor-

armers markets provide visitors with a window to see
into the world of the people and places that grow our
farm foods, baked goods, artisans chesses, local
honey and hand crafted products.
Once considered more of a novelty, farmers markets
today provide consumers with an alternative to traditional
grocery markets, specialty food stores and unique gift
shops. Visitors to local farmers markets can purchase locally grown and made items all with the convenience of one
stop shopping.
Different farmers, bakers, craftsmen and unique shop
owners come together in an outdoor market that showcases
everything local and homemade, handmade and locally
grown.
Farmers markets expose consumers to different seasonal foods and products. They offer more than typical supermarket or gift shop products and often include herbs, plants,
cut flowers, eggs, homemade specialty items such as jam
and jelly, baked items and local honey. Farmers markets
generally open in the spring and stay opened until the holidays. Each season brings new offerings.
When farmers markets open in the spring, they provide
consumers with fresh, locally grown produce, homemade
baked goods, prepared meals, soups and hand crafted items
that many have anticipated all winter. Their garden offerings are plentiful providing consumers with an exceptional

tant to support local growers and its better for our environment. Stop by and explore your local outdoor market today,
you may be surprised what you find and what you learn.

Environmentally Sensible Treatment for Termites

ermite Treatments are one of the most regulated

areas of pest control in New Jersey. The reason is
simple- the toxicity of the chemicals used in this
type of pest control treatment.
One of the traditional methods for treatment of subterranean termites is to dig a six-inch by six-inch trench
around the foundation of the home. This is kind of like a
mote around the castle. A chemical solution is mixed
usually on site of "water and termiticide." The solution is
poured into the newly dug trench and allowed to soak
into the ground.
The process is actually a protective chemical barrier.
The chemicals used in this application are known as "termiticides. A typical single family home can easily
require 100 to 150 gallons of a mixed termiticide and
water solution.
When treating for termites by NJ State Regulations
the entire perimeter of the home has to be done, meaning
treatment is supposed to surround all sides of the home's
foundation.
In some of the treatments, where there is a solid
ground surface and the termite solution cannot penetrate
the ground, holes are drilled every 12 inches. The home's
foundation, front stoop, concrete walkways, patios or
slabs are drilled and the chemical solution is inserted

into the holes. The holes are then plugged and sealed
with new concrete.
Termiticides are designed with agents allowing them
to bond with the soil and remain intact. The potency
could remain in the ground for seven to ten years or
longer. One of the concerns with this type of treatment is
that the barrier needs to be continuous surrounding the
foundation to be effective. Any break in this barrier and
termites may infiltrate the structure. A termite only needs
an opening of 1/32 of an inch in mortar or concrete to
enter a structure.
Another concern is the toxicity of the chemicals.
Termite treatments on properties with wells or cisterns
have a specific set of regulations and rules due to the toxicity of these treatments. The other thing is that these
chemical treatments do not address the termite colony,
therefore, may not be affected.
We use a better way to address "Termites and their
Colonies" without the heavy toxicity of the traditional
methods of trenching and mixing termiticide.
Our treatment is a "Termite Baiting System". We lure
the termites to our in-ground bait stations with a wood
by-product that attracts the termites and then treat that
area with a chemical as needed.
The first step is to install our baiting stations around

the perimeter of the home. We then monitor eachbaited

station on a regular/periodic schedule throughout the
year. At some point, the termites will find our bait. It
may be a few weeks or months, but they do eventually
find it.
Once the baited station(s) indicate that there is an
active presence of live termites we swap our initial Bait
Cartridge and install new bait that is actually a low dose
termite chemical, which has less of an impact on the
ground. This bait is brought back to the colony and
shared with the nest mates.
Instead of using the traditional method as discussed
above and contaminating the entire perimeter of the
home, we take an approach to termite treatment that is
"environmentally sensible".
Registered under the Reduced Risk Pesticide
Initiative with the EPA, the active ingredient is "hexaflumuron," that is the actual termite treatment and bait. This
is scientifically developed bait with an insect growth
regulator (IGR), which prohibits successful molting and
development of termites.
These systems can remain in place for an indefinite
amount of time for continued protection.

be commended, he added.
Charity, philanthropy and doing for
others are the things that both Harold and
Nomi Colton-Max have committed to
doing every day of their lives and these are
strong principles within the Jewish com-

haq loves everyone and is a wonderful family dog.

He is losing his home because his family is no
longer able to care for him and he needs a new home
urgently. Shaq is a very healthy 11 years old, loves all people and children and is very submissive with other dogs.
Like all beagles Shaq's favorite activity is walking outside
and smelling all the good things there are to smell, especially in spring. Shaq is hoping more than anything to find
a new home where he can go for walks and be loved and
be a part of a family once again. Shaq is extremely polite,
knows basic commands, and is a real love bug. He is smart
and curious and would be happiest in a family where he
would not be alone all day. He is losing a bit of his hearing. Shaq is vaccinated and neutered. If interested in Shaq,
contact the Pet Adoption League at www.palpets.org, call
973-584-0095 or email us at info@palpets.org.
