SEEN IN THE NOVEL THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS (1826) AND FILM THE
LAST OF MOHICANS (1992)

Abstract
Novel and film are often have close relationship to one another. Usually in making film, a director
will automatically refers to the released novel that has been published. A novel which has good
reputation and possess some appreciation from society will add more attractiveness toward the
director in order to make it into film soon. Therefore, there is no doubt if there are so many classic
novels like the one of William Shakespeares masterpiece that interest people the most. A well-known
American author named James Fennimore Cooper that successfully create his own masterpiece
entitled The Last of The Mohicans is the other cloning of Shakespeare. His novel had already
become the most popular novel in the 18th century. That was become the main background of a wellknown director named Michael Mann to film that was adapted from novel. Played by Danniel DayLewis and Madeleine Stowe, the film version of The Last of The Mohicans was sucessfully
achieved many appreciation from different kind of awards. The value contained in the both film and
novel was sucessfully attract peoples attention to feel the exitement to see the film that has been
released in September, 1992. Although it is a classic film, it is worth it to be seen because the
audience could feel the exitement rather than just read from the novel version. All in all, the author of
this article try to deliver some points and messages contained in the novel and film in order to make
the readers learn more through this film not only from the surface but also until deep inside.

Abstrak
Novel dan film seringkali memiliki korelasi yang dekat. Biasanya, dalam pembuatan sebuah film
seorang sutradara akan sering mengacu kepada novel yang sudah ada sebelumnya. Sebuah novel yang
memiliki reputasi yang bagus ditambah dengan beberapa penghargaan yang berhasil didapat
menambah ketertarikan seorang sutradara untuk segera membuat versi film dari novel tersebut. Oleh
karena itu, tidak dipungkiri lagi banyak novel klasik seperti mahakarya William Shakespeare sering
diminati para pembuat film. Tidak terkecuali mahakarya seorang penulis era tahun 1800 yaitu James
Fennimore Cooper dengan novel berjudul The Last of The Mohicans yang berhasil menjadi novel
paling populer di jamannya. Hal ini menjadi latar belakang sutradara ternama Michael Mann untuk
segera memfilmkannya. Dengan diperankan oleh seorang aktor kenamaan bernama Danniel DayLewis dan Madeleine Stowe, versi film dari The Last of The Mohicans berhasil meraih banyak
penghargaan dari ajang penghargaan yang berbeda-beda. Nilai-nilai yang terkandung di dalam novel
maupun film telah sukses menarik minat masyarakat luas untuk ikut berbondong-bondong melihat
film yang telah dirilis pada bulan September tahun 1992 ini.
