Tacoma Rainiers (18-23) at Iowa Cubs (19-20)

RHP Stephen Landazuri (0-0, 3.00) vs. RHP Carlos Pimentel (2-2, 3.62)

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Tacoma took advantage of

Iowa mistakes to win the series opener 5-3. 10 hits
from the Rainiers offense complimented 10 walks
issued by the Cubs pitching staff, leading to a win in
the Rainiers first taste of inter-conference play this
year. Tacoma starting pitcher Mike Montgomery
posted his sixth quality start of the season, going
6.0 innings while allowing three runs on seven hits.
Tony Zych, Kevin Gregg, and Dom Leone combined
to toss 3.0 innings of scoreless relief to hold the
Rainiers lead. Infielder Ketel Marte went 1-for-3 with
two runs, oen RBI, and two walks.

PITCHING AND DEFENSE: Over the last four games,

of which the Rainiers have won three, the pitching
staff has allowed an ERA of 2.00 (8ERx36IP) while the
defense has committed just two errors - the offense
was hitting just .228 (28x123) over that span.

TODAYS STARTERS: Rainiers starter Stephen

Landazuri is making just his second career Triple-A
start. In his first start, he held Las Vegas to two runs
on seven hits in 6.0 innings of work. In six starts
with Double-A Jackson, he limited right-handed
batters to a .212 (11x52) batting average with just
two extra base hits.

BALLING OUT: After drawing just four walks in his

first 152 at bats this season, Jesus Montero drew
three walks last night against Iowa. It was only the
third time in his career, and the first time since June
11, 2014 at Memphis, that he accomplished the feat.

Iowa starting pitcher Carlos Pimentel is making his

eighth appearance (seventh start) of the season,
and third career appearance against the Rainiers,
tonight. Pimentel has made two relief appearances
against Tacoma prior to this year, holding the
Rainiers scoreless on just two hits through 5.0
innings of work while striking out six. His home
ERA of 4.60 (8ERx15.2IP) is significantly higher than
his road ERA of 2.70 (5ERx16.2IP). Pimentel has
not allowed a single run in 16.2 innings of work in
May, going 2-0 in his three starts this month. He has
held right-handed batters to a .170 (9x53) batting
average, while lefties are hitting .246 (17x69). His
.213 (26x122) overall opponent batting average is
the lowest on the club among starting pitchers.
NOT SO GRAND: Tacoma is one of only five teams left
in the PCL who have not hit a grand slam this season.
The Rainiers last grand slam was hit on August 9,
2014 by Stefen Romero against Fresno. This season,
the Tacoma offense is hitting just .161 (5x31) with the
bases loaded, the lowest mark in the league.
EXTRA EFFORT: Rainiers batters have hit 110
extra base hits this year, placing them near the
middle of the league. However, only 30.1% of their
total hits this year have gone for extras, which is the
fourth worst mark in the league. Their 28 home runs
are tied for fifth most.

COLD BATS: Outside of infielder Ketel Marte and

Jesus Montero, who are hitting a combined .332
(105x316), the Rainiers offense is hitting just .241
(260x1080). As a team, Tacomas batting average of
.261 (365x1396) is the fifth worst in the league, and is
20 points lower than last years team average of .281.

NONE SHALL PASS: Rainiers catchers have

combined to throw out 39.5% of would-be base
stealers, the second best mark in the league. John
Hicks 39.3% caught stealing percentage is the third
best in the PCL.
NEVER NOT HOT: Ketel Marte has hit safely in nine
of his last 10 games, and in 35 of his 41 games this
season. In the last 10 contests, Marte is hitting .364
(12x33) with nine runs, seven RBI, and two home
runs. His home runs were the first two of the year,
and came on back-to-back nights. He is the only
player in the PCL to have played in 41 games this
year, and his 14 stolen bases are third in the league.
His 56 hits lead the league and are five more than
second place, while his .346 season batting avarege
is tied for the best in the PCL. Tacoma has not had
a player lead the PCL in average at the end of the
year since Troy Neel (.351) in 1992.
MOVEMENT: Fifteen players currently on the Rainiers
roster have been with the team since Opening Day,
and 18 of the players on the Opening Day roster
are currently with the club. Six players have earned
promotions from Tacoma to Seattle in 2015.

GRAND THEFT BASEBALL: The Rainiers 56 stolen

bases are the top mark in the Pacific Coast League,
and are eight more than second place Las Vegas.
Tacoma base runners have stolen bags with a
80.0% success rate, and already have over 52% of
last years 107 stolen bases.
