COURSE TITLE: Mechanics

PREREQUISITE: This is a calculus-based course, so we will be using basic
derivatives, and integration. Much of what we do depends only on extensive
use of algebra and trigonometry. Thus, you will need to know Algebra and
Trig like the back of your hand. You must know that cos 30 is 3/2 and
that sin 30

is

1/2

without turning on your calculator. You also must

know how to recognize and solve a quadratic equation.

COREQUISITE: MAT 131
REQUIRED MATERIALS:
1. Text: Physics for Scientist and Engineers with Modern Physics. 4th edition
by Douglas C. Giancoli
2. Scientific Calculator
Optional: Access to Masteringphysics [Course ID: IQBALPHYSICS131] if
you wish to submit homework via online instead of writing it on paper.
Welcome to Physics 131 Mechanics! I sincerely hope that you will enjoy this course
as you begin your study of Physics. I will try to make this semesters learning
process a two-way street. While you learn some interesting things about the
physical world around you, I will try to learn something interesting about you. Please
refer back to this syllabus for it has all the information concerning grading policy
and course content. Finally this is an insanely fast pace course, you will have to
devote a great deal of your time in order to do well.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: First part of a two-semester physics sequence for
physical-sciences or engineering majors who have a strong mathematics
background and are ready for a fast learning pace. It covers mechanics, wave
motion, kinetic theory, and thermodynamics. Calculus is used concurrently with its
development in MAT 131. The Laboratory component, PHY 133 (Lab 1), could be
taken concurrently. Not for credit in addition to PHY 121/123, PHY 125, or PHY 141.
This course has been designated as a High Demand/Controlled Access (HD/CA)
course. Students registering for HD/CA courses for the first time will have priority to
do so.

PHYSICS 131

Mechanics

Summer 2015 SBU

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Applying the basic kinematic equations to understand and predict the motion
of a body or system
Identifying and analyzing forces and torques acting on body or system
Using conservation laws for energy and/or linear/angular momentum to
predict and analyze the physical properties of a system
Applying knowledge of calculus to analyze and solve physics problems

Quizzes and Grading: There will be a total of four quizzes. That is it. The quizzes
are NOT cumulative, and there is NO final exam. THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UP
QUIZZES!! For each quiz, you are allowed to create and bring a formula sheet on
half a sheet of letter paper (yes front and back). You will be allowed to use your
calculator during the quiz, but you will not be allowed to use any other electronic
device (i.e. cell phone). If you must leave the room, you will be asked to leave your
cell phone in the room. The grading scale will be as follows:
Quiz 1
20%
Quiz 2
20%
Quiz 3
20%
Quiz 4
20%
Homework
20%
Total
100%
Your final course letter grade will be determined as follows:
[more about this
will be discussed during 1st
class session]
90 to 100%

80 to 89%

70 to 79%

51 to 69%

Under 51%

*No Curve*
Homework: Unfortunately since I made your homework a big chunk your grade, I
will be assigning a lot of homework problems. Homework is to be turned in on the
day of quizzes. Therefore, your first homework assignment is due on the day of your
first quiz, before you take the quiz. I WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY LATE HOMEWORK!
If you do not turn in homework on the due date, dont bother turning it into me.
**Homework Format** [Only for those who prefer not to use
Masteringphysics]

Summer 2015 SBU

Included in this syllabus is a section that shows you the format for the homework
problems. This will help you to be organized. Your homework must be in this format
or it may not be graded, it will be handed back to you and you will receive a zero for
that assignment.
