INTRODUCTION
Drilling fluid formulation and properties play fundamental roles as drilling operation
proceed deeper into subsurface formation. It is to remove the drill cuttings from the borehole
whilst drilling and to prevent formation fluids from flowing into the borehole and lastly to
preserve the wellbore stability.
WBM is a more applicable and manageable mud to be used as to comply with the
environmental restrictions and economical aspects in comparison with other muds such as
SBM and OBM. It is said that drilling fluid performance will be reduced and varied
continuously corresponding to the composition present in the formation
1. CASE STUDY
Drilled Well Z is composed of unconsolidated shale formation at respective depth.
2. PROBLEM FACED
I.
Wellbore instability
a. - Largest source of lost time and trouble cost
b. - Transportation of cuttings to the surface cannot be operated smoothly
c. - Caused a disastrous change in the rheological properties of fluid
II.
Unbalanced pressure
a. Mud pressure exceeded the combination of pore pressure and swelling
pressure.
b. Cutting hydration and dispersion
c. Drop of level in mud returning to the surface
III.
Production of oil
a. The production of oil decreases from 50 bbl/day to 10 bbl/day
Participants are required to come out with a WBM with the best performance for the
above case study. The Mud Weight (MW) or Mud Density of the drilling fluid is 9.5ppg.
COMPETITION FORMAT
1. The purpose of this competition is to obtain the best mud composition based on the
given criteria and individual additives which can increase the mud efficiency that is
suitable to be used in drilling.
2. Each team will be allocated time (1 hour each team) to do the experiment in the
drilling lab at Faculty of Chemical Engineering and the data must be collected in the
lab.
3. All the team will present their results obtained from the experiments to the judges and
will be evaluated based on the given criteria.
4. Every team needs to prepare for their presentation. Presentation material and media is
optional but has to be prepared before.
5. Assessment or judgment will concern on comprehensiveness of data, analysis, and
results; writing systematic; processing procedure; and presentation skills.
6. Each presentation will be given 5 minutes presentation followed by 3 minutes
Q & A.
3. All equipment and apparatus in testing the mud will be provided by the Drilling Lab
JUDGING CRITERIA
1. The mud that is done will be tested based on the properties.
AWARD
1. Results of all the competition will be announced and awards will be distributed during
the closing ceremony.
2. There will be 3 (three) winners in this competition, which are:
Winner
1st runner-up
2nd runner-up
