REVEREND CAROLYN WRITES

In July 2013, on a cycle path at Seafield, near Edinburgh, the body of a six week old baby boy was found, wrapped
in a blanket. He seemed to have been well looked after but his mother has never been found in spite of the best
efforts of police. Last month, more than two hundred people attended his funeral. Someone made his final clothes
and a piper played. His grave was marked with a plaque reading "Known to God".
I wonder if we ever quite take in that God knows us. Jesus made it clear that the love of his Father is of a different
order from even the best that we know. He made two baffling assertions - that even the hairs of our head are
numbered, and in one of the Psalms it says, our limbs as they form within our mother's womb, are recorded and
known by God.
Before you dismiss these things as off the wall, and ridiculous, just imagine for a moment, how you would feel if they
were true.
Love and prayers,
Carolyn
Rector

THE ADSTONE QUIZ SATURDAY 25TH

APRIL
Some said it was the hardest quiz ever, and as one of the
competitors who took part, I think I would concur with that
statement! Having taken part in the twice yearly event for
nearly 8 years, and even a couple of times before that, it
certainly pushed the brain cells to the max!
It was a doubly hard quiz night for Conrad and Anne
Dower who organise the quiz, as they had only
arrived back in the UK from Australia 48 hours
beforehand! Jet lag didnt, however, stop Conrad
from being the most patient and masterful of quiz
masters even with the usual rowdy crowd!! Although
towards the end of evening, he did resort to the use
of a microphone just to be heard above the ever
increasing raucous din!
It was very nice to welcome Revered Carolyn and
her husband John, together with their team from
Blakesley to the quiz for the first time. They proved
to be very worthy contenders to the top spot, but as
hard as the quiz was, and as hard as we all try every
time, we can never compete with the outstanding
talent of the team we now refer to as Annas team!!
I dont know if they inwardly digest the Readers
Digest, or Britannicas Encyclopaedia (or in this
case, the Garmin Sat Nav and AA Road Atlas!), but
they appear to be unbeatable! This however does
not stop us all from returning each time for another
go at reaching the dizzy heights of 1st place! Like one
of my team members succinctly put, I think next time
well play our joker card on the Bangers & Mash
round! We may have more luck, or at least get
double the amount of sausages!
We also welcomed Darren and Angela Cairns,
together with Darrens parents, Maureen and Alan,
to their first quiz as new villagers, having moved in
to The Grange (formerly Manor Farm) and The
5

Granary respectively in February. We very much hope to see them back for the second quiz in November... (if they
werent put off that it is!)
Thanks, as always, go again to Conrad for organising, writing, compring and refereeing the quiz, to Anne, Leslie,
Helen, Suzy, Richard and Michelle for preparing, cooking and serving the meal, and to all those who helped set up
the hall and served on the night.

2ND MONDAY CLUB 7.30PM ... LITCHBOROUGH VILLAGE HALL ... 8TH JUNE
Hello there. This month we are welcoming Alan Standish from the 'Northamptonshire Artefact Recovery Club'. Alan
is coming to talk about the organisation and the part it plays in finding buried historical objects, using metal detection
equipment.
Now then, if you have the time and you are of a mind to do so, have a look at the website: www.NARC.org.uk It is
such an interesting and exciting site!
Alan's talk is called 'The Wonderful World of Metal Detection' and will include tips on how to identify, how to record
finds and how his group help with local archaeological digs ... we'll all be out there ... all fired up to have a go ... and
of course, he is bringing along various things that have been found locally ... maybe in Litchborough ... sounds quite
intriguing...
As usual, the evening will cost just 3 if you come as a visitor and everyone is welcome.
Thank you to everybody who popped along to our last evening with John Woolhett 'The Birdman'. A lovely relaxed
speaker, great to listen to and full of knowledge. Quite amazing how far (or not) the birds we see in our gardens
travel ... and how long some of them live!
We look forward to welcoming you at our June meeting, come if you can, we're very friendly.
You can get me on 830517 or carolhakin120@btinternet.com if you need more information about 2nd Monday.

NEWS FROM ST MARYS BLAKESLEY

The church has been very busy lately. In April we saw a lovely wedding. The sun came out just in time for the newly
wed Mr and Mrs Russell to leave the church after walking down the aisle to an impromptu guard of honour made
up of white roses. We wish them every happiness in their life together. Little Charlotte Eliot was christened on the
10th May. On the 6th May the church hosted the very moving Memorial Service for Sir John Greenaway on 6 th May
which was attended by over 600 people.
On a regular basis our lively Family Service runs on the fourth Sunday each month at 10.30. The music group, made
up of all ages, adds a real buzz to the service and its great to see so many children and adults involved in reading
and leading the worship. If you havent been yet, why not come along and give it a try? Its short and very family
friendly!
Lambfold Benefice Messy Church is running on the third Saturday each month from 2-4 p.m.,
usually in Blakesley School Hall. No-one is too old or too young to come along and have fun.
You may have seen us racing our model boats, flying kites or sending up helium balloons as
we find novel ways to investigate a bible story! Theres always time for a chat with friends
over some cake and something to take home at the end of the session. You can find us on
Facebook.
Dont forget our short Communion Service each month on the second Sunday. It lasts about half an hour, so it is
ideal for folk with children and those with busy Sundays.
Our recent AGM has voted in our Church Council members, but the position of Treasurer remains vacant. If you, or
someone you know, might be willing to help us in this please get in touch with Rev. Carolyn (860507) or either of
the Churchwardens (Mary Barnett 860585 or Barrie Osborne 860280)

NEWS FROM BLAKESLEY CE PRIMARY

We continued at a fast pace in the run up to the Easter Break, which culminated in our Easter Service led by the
children in which they children sang and performed poetry for their Parents. We also had a fantastic Easter egg
hunt in the School grounds for the House with the most house points, which last term was Foxley.
Class 1 finished their topic Dragonology, making dragon models and kites and learning some dancing for the
Chinese New Year. They had a visit from a real bearded dragon which they were very excited about. Class 2 walked
around the village led by Mrs Barnett and they learned some of the history of Blakesley.
We have two groups of children continuing with their visits to Towcester Primary and Sponne to take part in Gifted
and Talented English and Maths with other children in the cluster. It is a great opportunity to meet with other children
before they all start Sponne together.
This term we welcome our Rising 5s from Blakesley Pre-school. They all look so smart in their uniform and are
proving to be a very confident bunch and look like they are having lots of fun!
Next week is SATs week, the children are very well prepared and we wish them luck. We are confident they will do
us and themselves proud.
The rest of the Summer term is jam packed- The year 6 pupils are off for a 3 day residential at Croft Farm in
Gloucestershire. We have induction days for our new Reception pupils and our Year 6s will be off to Sponne. There
are music concerts, leavers assembly and ball, camping weekend (please join us if you are able to), bikeability and
much more. We keep everyone up to date on Twitter, Facebook and our Website.
Sport
Our children have continued to be great ambassadors for the School when attending sporting events.
We took part in the Netball and won 3 matches and drew 1 and wed like to thank
Ms Dixon for coaching the pupils in the run up to the competition. Our Year 6 pupils took part in the Swimming Gala
and we came 1st in the Small Schools Trophy and came 2nd overall!!
Our pupils in Year 4 & 5 took part in an archery competition coming 4th overall. We arranged for some professional
coaching for the pupils in Class 2 before the Red Tennis Tournament, which paid off as they came 3rd. They won
all their games and only missed out on 2nd place on points.
Several of our children took part in rugby and football tournaments over the Bank Holiday weekend and have come
to School with arms full of trophies. Well done all!
Class 3 enjoyed cross country in their PE lessons and they are looking forward to taking part in the cluster
competitions.
We now have a fantastic all weather table tennis table in the playground and wed like to thank Mr Morrell and Mr
Taylor for putting it together. Children and Staff have all enjoyed playing games on it and weve only lost a few pingpong balls to the roof.
Thank you
To Romer for continuing to mow the grass outside School and for removing the moss from the pavement.
To all our Parents and volunteers that support the School on a daily basis and help with transport to and from our
many varied activities.

Could You Become A School Governor?

Here at Blakesley CE Primary School we have an effective and successful governing body. We have worked closely
with the Head Teacher and staff; and Northamptonshire County Council have recently moved us to a good category
in their assessment and we want to continue this improvement. Our current Ofsted assessment is that we are a
school that requires improvement and we want to make sure that next time we are assessed we are rated as
good or even outstanding.

We would like to recruit some more local people to join our governing body to help us to continue to improve all
aspects of Blakesley CE Primary School. It is not necessary to be a parent of a child at school but someone in our
local community who has a real interest in helping us to continue to improve.
The role of a school governor is a vital one and nationally there are now very high expectations of governing bodies.
We are the strategic leaders in our school and have a vital role to play in making sure every child in our school gets
the best possible education. Our role is a strategic one and we do not get involved in operational issues in school.
Our focus is on three core strategic functions:
Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction of our school;
Holding the head teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the
performance management of staff; and
Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.
There are a number of different sorts of governor that it is possible to become:
Foundation governors - who have a specific role in preserving and developing the ethos of the school, including any
religious character, and are appointed by the Diocese.
Co-opted governors - which are appointed by the Governing Body on the basis of specific skills or expertise that
they may be able to bring from professional or other experience, which will improve the overall effectiveness of the
governing body.
Parent Governors who are elected by the other parents at the school.
Associate Members who are appointed by the Governing Body to serve on one or more of the governing body
committees. Associate Members are not governors and do not have a vote on governing body decisions but may
have a vote on decisions made by the committees that they are appointed to. Associate members would not normally
attend full governing body meetings.
At Blakesley, we operate three main committees of our full governing body and generally a governor would be a
member of at least one of these. These are:
Standards Committee which looks in detail at how the school is performing in terms of attainment and
progress and things like the curriculum and teaching standards.
Resources Committee which looks at how the school budget is being spent and ensuring that all
appropriate financial controls are in place.
Health, Safety and Premises Committee which oversees the fabric of the building and the health and
safety of all those within it.
The commitment to become a school governor will usually involve two meetings each term a full governing body
meeting and also a meeting of one of our committees. These take place generally in the evenings and can last up
to 2 hours each. In addition, each governor will usually undertake a monitoring visit, or learning walk of some sort
each term. There is a requirement to undertake appropriate training for new governors and any subject specific
training that might be needed. There is no remuneration for any of these activities either nationally or locally.
Associate Members are not full governors and are not required to attend full governing body meetings so the
commitment is slightly less. Generally only attendance at a committee meeting and a monitoring visit/learning walk
each term is required with training where this is appropriate.
Being a school governor is a big commitment these days as so much more is expected of us, however it is very
rewarding and a strong and effective governing body is vital to support the schools continued progress and
assessments by Ofsted. I hope that you will feel able to consider whether you could contribute in some way, either
as a governor or as an Associate Member, to helping Blakesley to continue to be the great school that it is.
Our current governors are Lucy Burman (Head Teacher), Lauren Leeson (Staff Governor), Sophie Stuart-Buttle,
Katherine Harvie; Luke Barker, Robert Ward and Revd Carolyn Oley and myself and I know any of us would be
happy to chat to you about being a governor.
If you would be interested in joining us, I would be very happy to meet with you and talk through any questions that
you have. In addition, we will ask all prospective governors to complete a skills matrix so that we can see what skills
and experience they are able to bring to the role, as it is very important that we recruit the right people for the school.
I can be contacted through Anne in the School Office on 01327 860257.
I look forward to hearing from you.
With best wishes.

Commemoration of VE Day
At 11:00am on Saturday 9th May 28 people and 3 children gathered in church to ring or try to ring our two bells
in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of VE Day. A most convivial hour was spent ringing, learning to ring,
drinking wine and chatting. One or two of the older parishioners were even heard swopping tales of their wartime
experiences in their prams towards the end of the conflict!
It is to be hoped that we can repeat this occasion to commemorate VJ Day in August.

Where have all the dogs gone?

In 2003 we began to record, in the church Attendance Register, the number of dogs who accompanied their owners
on the Rogation pilgrimage. In 2003 there were 5 dogs. This number rose over the years until it peaked in 2006 and
2007 with 12 and 15 dogs respectively. The numbers then steadily declined reaching just 1 dog this year. Where
have all the dogs gone? Have they lost their faith? Or are they glued to the television when they should be out
walking?
Dog owners should take the responsibility for the spiritual welfare of their canine friends and ensure that they attend
church at least twice a year once for the annual Pet Service in Litchborough and once for the Rogation pilgrimage
to Maidford. When published, please ensure that these two dates are entered in your pets diaries.

MAIDFORD IN THE GARDEN

On Wednesday 6th May we had Chris Campling from Moulton College in Northampton, who gave us an informative
illustrated talk on Pests and Diseases. Im sure that we all gained some knowledge of how to tackle pests in the
garden and hopefully will put into practice his suggestions.
There is no meeting in June as we will all be working hard to support the Fete.
The next meeting therefore will be on 1st July when we will be doing the popular Walking Around Maidford Gardens.
More details to follow.

MOBILE LIBRARY
The Mobile Library visits Maidford every third Friday of the month. It parks by the post box between 4:45 and 5:10pm.
We are very lucky, still, to have this valuable service which is used by only a few Maidford residents. Please 'use it'
or we 'lose it.'

FARTHINGSTONE VILLAGE HALL

Treasurer Assistance required for the Village Hall
After 18 years of service Chris FitzGerald is leaving the Village Hall Treasurers Role and the Charity would love to
hear from anyone with the requisite skills who would be willing to assist maintaining the financial health of this village
facility. It is not all work and the fun content in working on the Committee is what you make of it ideally someone
who has ideas on uses for the Hall would be great. Chris will be around over the summer to hand over but clearly
the sooner someone starts the more they will benefit from the handover. The Village Hall Season is typically the
winter months as the Joy Mead provides the summer entertainment so it should be a relatively quiet time.
Please contact Chris if you are interested in understanding what is involved on chrisfitzgerald@affordablefd.com or
07761 180369 and he can give you the Job Description and the lowdown on estimated time taken. The successful
candidate will be chosen by the current committee.
