It was kind of thrown on
our laps last year, and we
had a lot of overlap of too
many things going on on a
certain day, said Dahrlyne
Knaus, FCSS Programmer,
who realized organizing
meetings and spreading out
the activities would prove
more beneficial to seniors.
I found it a very easy
group to work with, because
we all had the same common
goal. So it was very easy to
juggle things. Because we
realized last year we didnt
spread it out as much as we
wanted to, we all knew that
going in and that was our
goal. Everybody pitched in
and did their part, and it was
a very easy collaboration this
year.

Every year the Wheatland
Elementary School participates in the Walk for a Cure
to raise money towards a
charity of their choice.
On May 13, the school
chose to do a walk for Celiac Disease and two students showed the courage
to speak about how they
cope with the disease.
This was Tessa Boyds
first time speaking about it.
It was a little bit weird
to do it and I was a little
shy to do it, but I did it because it was going to be
cool, said Boyd.
Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disease that can
damage the lining of the
small intestine.
If I look at the people,
then I kind of get nervous
but if I just look at my paper, it makes me feel that

Despite their engagement in a legal battle with
the Town of Strathmore over their groundwater
well usage, a local hotel was recently challenged
by the Alberta Environment Sustainable Resource
Development with an enforcement order to stop
diverting the water, for a lack of licensing. However, the order was quickly withdrawn when the
hotelier was able to provide documentation of an
existing license - much to the towns disapproval.
Mohinder Singh Gill, owner of the Howard
Johnson Hotel in Strathmore, appealed the order
and was able to track down the original license to
his well that states it was issued to White Wezel
Enterprises Ltd. in 1993 and does not expire.
Were going through quite a bit right now with
all the bad press and having them publish an article in the Calgary Herald saying we dont have a
licensed well, when we did have a licensed well,
said Paul Gill, manager of the Strathmore Howard
Johnson and Mohinder Gills son.
My father asked them to help him locate the
original well license and he got absolutely no
help from anyone. He asked a ton of people for
help. He wasnt the original owner. We bought
the building in 1998, so theres a 20-year period
where one owner had it.
Gill was required to find the original paperwork
through much research and online searches, as
the original document was not in his possession.
AESRD withdrew the Water Act Enforcement order, within days of its submission. However, Gill
received a letter a few weeks later stating that the
Town of Strathmores legal representation had
contacted AESRD requesting that they not withdraw their order. In a letter, AESRD responded
that the appeal is now closed, and there is nothing before the board to suggest the license is not
valid.
Congratulations graduates!
KEVIN SORENSON, M.P., CROWFOOT
Parliamentary Report
At this time of year, throughout our riding of
Crowfoot, students are graduating! We should all
take a few moments to congratulate and encourage our younger generation by assuring them of
the importance of their education. Students need
to know that the investment of time and effort
they spend on their studies pays off.
I always try to remind my young constituents
that Albertans enjoy some of the best prospects
for a bright future. We are living in an era where
our province is known as one of the most prosperous in our nation. While we are fortunate to
have abundant gas and oil reserves in our province, Alberta offers many other opportunities in
various sectors as well.
For example, economists say that the best longterm forecasts are for the agriculture industry. This
is especially true for our agricultural sector in Alberta. We experienced a bumper crop two years
ago and the forecasters predict more to come.
This is a sector that is attractive to many graduates. Young people who have studied agriculture
are anxious to apply their high-tech knowledge
to the traditional challenges ranchers and farmers
face every day.
As well, our tourism industry continues to grow
in leaps and bounds. As your Member of Parliament, I am being invited to more and more events
that are created by the folks around our riding
that are building our tourism sector. We see this
promising source of income grow from the smallest villages to our larger population centers. Again,
we see opportunities for our graduates to prosper
and develop what we have right here at home.
Our Government is working to help families
have the resources to raise their children. Canadians know that the best people to decide what is

ing her and she managed to actually win the very first
pageant she went to for National Canadian Girl, said McKinnon, owner of Megasupreme Team. She has an amazing
personality. Having only had one or two coaching sessions
with her and having her go and win, made me really proud
as a coach.
Along with an estimated 100 girls from across Canada, the
contestants in the four/five-year-old category will be expected to answer age-appropriate questions.
Liz McKinnon, national director of National Canadian Girl
Teen and Miss Pageant, said expectations at this age are low,
but judges will focus on whether the girls can speak fluently,
show personality during their beauty or casual walk, and
whether eye contact is established.
It doesnt matter if theyre in a $20 dress from Target or if
theyre in a $200 dress from a bridal shop, were just looking
for are they well put together, said McKinnon. We have so
many success stories of girls who have been bullied and they
do this and find this whole new group of friends. The girls
just click together really well.
Until the reigning National Canadian Toddler Miss Central Alberta makes her way to British Columbia, her new
responsibilities include three local appearances and some
volunteer work. According to Biswanger, fundraising efforts
and volunteer hours are currently geared towards the Alberta Childrens Hospital. A cause, Biswanger said, teaches
her daughter about the hardships other children her age are
faced with.
To sponsor Avery for the title of Tiny Miss National Canadian Girl, she has an online campaign on legup.ca under
Getting Avery to the National Canadian Girl Pageant.

weight restriction, companies may exceed the limit by applying to the county
for an exemption allowance. Yet, some
councillors felt those carrying the extra
weight would find ways around the bylaw to travel on county roads.
This has always been a big issue,
said Councillor Alice Booth, who voted
in favour of increasing the limit. Being
a trucker, we went to Alberta Transportation and the government would override the county. They will still be hauling the weight. Us coming in saying we
are going to make this permanent, they
are just going to get the permit from the
provincial government.
According to administration, the surrounding municipalities are currently
following the permitting guidelines
and regulations set out under the Traffic Safety Act for weight of commercial
vehicles.
Alan Parkin, the chief administrative
officer, does not see a change in weight
in the foreseeable future. As the Motor
Transport Bylaw will not see an increase
on their weight restrictions, Wheatland
County roads will remain at a weight
limit of 21,000 kg.

The Strathmore High School boys soccer
team played their last game against Notre
Collegiate of High River on May 25 before
zones in Cochrane on the weekend.
Friendly competition!
Students from Strathmore High School, Holy Cross Collegiate, Standard School, and Siksika Nation High School competed against each
other during the county track and field event held at Wheatland Elementary on May 21.

The Strathmore Spartans High
School boys soccer team was hopeful to get a key victory on May 25
before heading off to Cochrane to
take part in zones on the weekend.
Head coach Kaitrin McDonnell
was impressed with her teams
work ethic in preparation for the
zones.
The boys looked strong at practice this week, said McDonnell,
in an e-mail interview. We were
fighting for a win on Monday to
have solid momentum heading into
zones.
She added that having strong defense at zones would be crucial in
carrying the team.
Our defense is solid and they
hold the line and everyone is playing very well in their positions and
have a much stronger game sense,
said McDonnell.
There will be some strategies that
will hopefully be used effectively.
Weve been working a lot on
throw-in strategy and our corner
kicks to take advantage of opportunities throughout the game, she
said. Well need to communicate
on the field and come together as
a team. Im looking to Lane Anderson and our Captain Darion Sandri
for their continuous leadership and
presence on the field.
The Spartans will be in Cochrane
for zones on May 29-30.

However, they would be

The way at this level
that it works is all the girls
on your bench have to

no substitutions. There is
a fair play rule, we have
starters, but with all that
said, everybody roles in
and plays a part, said Appleyard. We have people
that are serving specialists, people that are better
in the front row and we try
to introduce people in and
out of the line-up. For me
its about creating that experience and confidence
going into the future for
these girls, because what

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS
Life is about opportunity. We have
such expressions as Opportunity Knocks to express the idea
that life is full of opportunities.
Someone once said, Too often,
the opportunity knocks, but by
the time you push back the chain,
push back the bolt, unhook the
two locks and shut off the burglar
alarm, its too late.
Have you ever kicked yourself
because you missed a golden
opportunity? I think all of us can
relate here. Has an opportunity
ever knocked on your door and
you were so caught up in other
things and as a result that opportunity slipped through your fingers?
Im convinced that it has happened
to all of us! But I pray that we
would wake up to the opportunities around us!
There are two opportunities that
the Bible encourages us not to
miss. First, we must not miss
the opportunity to reach out to
people who dont know Jesus.
Paul says in Colossians 4:5, Walk
in wisdom toward those who are
outside, making the most of every
opportunity.
Every day we live we have opportunity to share Jesus with others.
The question is, How serious are
we about reaching others? Are
we wasting the golden opportunities presented to us to lead

someone to Christ?
Second, we must not miss the
opportunity to do good deeds.
Galatians 6:10, Therefore, as we
have opportunity, let us do good to
all people, especially to those who
belong to the family of believers.
Jesus tells us about this in the
parable of the Good Samaritan.
The Levite and the Priest passed
by the man in need, and thus they
missed the opportunity to help this
person. The Good Samaritan took
advantage of the opportunity and
he stopped and served the man
in need.
There is a story about the Shoe
salesman that went to Africa.
He was there two weeks and he
wrote his company back a letter
saying, Please bring me home,
nobody wears shoes over here.
They sent another salesman in his
place and in a couple of weeks, he
sent a letter back to the company
saying, Please send all the shoes
you can, because nobody where
shoes here.
Our lives as Christians are about
opportunities. God places before
us the opportunities to share
Jesus with others and to do good
deeds. The question is: are we
taking advantage of those opportunities?

Ken Slemko
It is with great sadness that we announce that
Kenneth John Slemko suffered a sudden and
unexpected heart attack in Canmore which claimed
his life on May 24, 2015 at the age of 67 years.
Remaining family held dear to Ken are Val, his
wife and constant companion of 43 years, and
his daughter Sarah (Dave), grandchildren Lucy,
Zander, Evan and Teagan.
Ken and Val farmed in the Strathmore area for
many years before moving to Canmore in 2002.
Ken loved the outdoors. He enjoyed biking and
hiking in the mountains and scuba diving in
Cozumel, Mexico.
Friends and family are invited to an informal
gathering of remembrance at the Creekside Hall,
Canmore Seniors Center, 600 - 9 Street at 1:00 pm
on Sunday, June 7, 2015.
Much have we loved you, but speechless was our
love, and with veils it has been veiled.
Yet now it cries aloud unto you, and would stand
revealed before you.
And ever has it been that love knows not its own
depth until the hour of separation.

With all that is going on in the world today the Bank of Canada has lowered its prime lending
rate several times consecuitively. What does this mean for the citizens of Strathmore? Well
now is a great time to buy a new home. When negotiating the purchase price of your new
home people dont often think about what the real cost of the home is because most people
are so focused on the purchase price they forget about the price to finance. First time home
buyers the time is now dont wait. In todays low interest market the overall price of the
home is effectively reduced by the interest rate itself. Call me today and get preapproved. I will
let you know how much you can afford so that you can go out house hunting
