PRINCIPALS MESSAGE
Dear Parents,
Schools are made up of many people who work
quietly behind the scenes but are vital to the success of
the school. Ken Cochrane has been one of these people for the
last eight years in his role as Chair of the Board of Trustees and
has tended his resignation at the last Board meeting as he felt it
was the right time to go.
Ken has overseen many important projects including the
appointment of a new Principal, two successful and improved
ERO reviews and major property projects such as the back field.
Kens insightful comments and careful questioning will be missed
but he will be ably replaced with experienced Board member Barb
Long. The Board also welcome Dougal McGowen who has been
selected to fill the casual vacancy. Dougal has two children, one in
Year 4 and another about to start soon. Dougal offers a wide
range of education and business skills to the Board.

Junior News

We are still really immersed in the minibeasts inquiry in the Juniors. Come and see
our wonderful bug art in our classrooms and our mini inquiries.
We will move into talking about our mini society in the next two weeks. Each class
will be talking about the occupations people do in order for us to understand how
society works. We will be making and marketing a product in each class so that we
can sell it on market-day in week 8. We will create our own company with a name
and have different worker roles within our company. Stand by for more information
from each class.
PMP will not take place in the week 8th -12th of June and there will be no Fun Friday
on the 12th either due to our focus on our Mini Society. Hopefully at the end of this,
children will understand why we need to work to make money to enable us to live.
We hope this will encourage good learning conversations with your child about why
you go to work, the job you do and what people need to do to support their families.
Middle News -

Recently Have a go day was held at the Edgar Centre and we had some very excited
children in the Middle syndicate. Around twenty minutes was spent at each station
and children were able to get a taste of a range of different sports and hopefully an
interest in joining a new team or club. The teachers were all really proud of how well
the middles demonstrated the KAIK values and represented our school.
Well done to Joe Dyer who won a $150 book voucher for Kaikorai Primary School
while at the Dav Pilkey event (author of Captain Underpants). Joe will get to choose
some books that he thinks will be good additions to our school library.
Senior News

Financial Literacy has been the big concept during the second term. We have
played games focused on finance; explored the vocabulary of money, debts,
borrowing and budgets; and solved lots of different problems involving financial
transactions.
In the last two weeks we have finalized our companies, and their members. The
teachers were impressed by the standard of applications and resumes that were
submitted by the children when they applied for their preferred companies. They
clearly had put a lot of thought into their written applications. We give a big thank
you to parents who supplied written references for their children, we know how
much the children appreciated them.

Mini Society
This week the middles and senior students have had their first on the job training as
part of the apprenticeship week and all companies have developed their questions
they need to ask themselves, beginning to develop a business plan and start to create
prototypes and ideas.
The Government has been elected with congratulations going to all recently elected
representatives. One of their first orders of business was to select a currency, name
for the programme and develop laws. Well done to Victoria Dearden for designing
the money which will be known as Foodfuel (The Maori Translation of Kaikorai).
The Government has selected the name of Kaikville for our society.

During the dates June 9-11 Kaikville will be in operation where the children will be
creating and marketing their products and services. This will culminate in the
Market Day on Friday the 12th of June starting with a opening ceremony at 11.30.
It is expected that the Market will last approximately 60 minutes. A foreign
exchange will be set up at the bank for parents where they can exchange NZD for
Foodfuel dollars at the rate of 1NZD=3FFD. All proceeds will go to the Nepalese
Earthquake appeal.

Our Physical Activity Leaders held their winter skills

training session at the Edgar Centre this week. Sports skills
and leadership responsibilities are developed in this
programme run by Sport Otago.

Parent Group
School Disco
School Disco will be held on Wednesday 24th June, this is a fun event where children get to dress
up and dance with their classmates, - sausages, glowsticks and fizzy drinks are available for
purchase on the night. The Junior Disco is for New Entrants, Year 1 & 2 only and is from 5.00pm
to 6.15pm. We need at least 8 Junior parents to help on the night for the Junior disco to run,
currently we have 2 volunteers. The Senior Disco is for the Middle and Senior syndicate students
only and is from 6.30pm to 8.00pm. If you can help please contact Nikola Ballard on

Entertainment Books
Thank you to all the families who have already purchased an Entertainment Book, to date we have
raised approximately $1,000. We would like to close this fundraising event but still have 18 books
outstanding, these need to be returned to the school office immediately.

Big thank you to those parents who helped organize the event and those that helped on the day.
We raised over $600 well done Kaikorai Families.
