Vanya & Gokul are co-champions of Spelling Bee!

By Shiv Chopra
New York: Second year in row,
pairs of Indian kids were declared
co-champions of the Scripps
National Spelling Bee held in
Maryland. And eight years in a row
Indian American kids have dominated the championship.
Vanya Shivashankar and Gokul
Venkatachalam were declared cochampions Thursday in a nationally televised event. Gokuls word
was nunatak, a hill or mountain
completely surrounded by glacial
ice. Predictably, he nailed it. And
the confetti fell! Because earlier
the two contestants left to fight it
out had exhausted the championship word list. Vanyas final
word was scherenschnitte.
Vanya wins the championship on
her fifth attempt. From Olathe,
Kansas, her sister Kavya was the
2009 bee champion. Before Vanya,

DHS starts accepting work permit

applications for H4 visa holders
By SATimes Team
New York: The US Department of
Homeland Security (DHS) on
Tuesday started accepting employment authorization applications for
H-4 visa holders, who are dependents of H-1B nonimmigrant workers.According to the DHS, it will
issue Employment Authorization
Document (EAD) within 90 days of
receiving the application.
The H4 work permit rule passed in
November by President Obama is
one of the legislative measures taken
to fix the broken immigration system
of the country. The rule was temporarily halted after Save Jobs USA,
a group made up of former Southern
California Edison computer workers
replaced by foreign workers with H1B visas, filed suit against DHS in
April sought to stop it. The group
alleged it is already difficult for its
members to find work after they
were replaced with H-1B workers,
and that the new policy will further
increase competition for jobs.
However, the U.S. District Judge
Tanya S. Chutkan found in a memorandum opinion filed Sunday that
Save Jobs USA failed to prove that
its members would suffer injuries
under the policy.

There is no indication, and Save

Jobs has not provided any evidence,
that it is certain that H-4 visa holders
will apply for IT jobs and compete
with Save Jobs members, Chutkan
wrote. Now in effect the new rule
will allow H-4 dependents of certain
H-1B nonimmigrant workers to
request for employment authorization as long as H-1B worker has
already started the process of seeking
lawful permanent residence (green
card) through employment. In its
present state, new rule is not for all
H4 visa holders.
According to DHS, eligible individuals include certain H-4 dependent spouses of H-1B non-immigrants
who are the principal beneficiaries of
an approved Form I-140, Immigrant
Petition for Alien Worker; or who
have been here for more than six
years and got extensions to stay on
and work legally.
According to DHS, nearly 180,000
new alien workers may be added to
the US workforce in the first year of
the rule with as many as 55,000 jobs
added annually thereafter.
The new rule is designed to reduce
economic burdens and personal
stress of these immigrant families
while their papers are being
processed.

an electronic device," said
Venkataraman.
With electronic devices becoming smaller every day, the field of
molecular electronics has become
more critical in solving the problem of further miniaturization.
Single molecule represents the
limit of miniaturization.
The idea of creating a singlemolecule diode was suggested by
Arieh Aviram and Mark Ratner

Latha Venkataraman

who theorized in 1974 that a molecule could act as a rectifier, a

one-way conductor of electric
current.
"It is amazing to be able to
design a functioning single
molecular circuit," Venkataraman
said.
She and her team are now
working on understanding the
fundamental physics behind their
discovery and trying to increase
the rectification ratios they
observed, using new molecular
systems.
The report was published on
May 25 in the journal Nature
Nanotechnology.

Seven charged with stealing the

identities of Indian Americans
New Jersey: Seven members of an
identity-theft ring that used information from Indian Americans to
net more than $540,000 in cash
and high-priced merchandise have
been arrested.
Police in New Jersey seized
more than 250 driver's licenses
and credit cards that were recovered from various properties
owned and rented by the defendants, according to a media report
citing acting Union County
Prosecutor Grace Park.
The three-week investigation of
the ring began after Westfield
police received reports of alleged
fraud uncovered at the Lord and
Taylor store in the township's
downtown, NJ.com reported.
From August 2014 through April
2015, authorities allege, the sus-

pects used copies of government

documents from people with dual
citizenship.
With those documents, the suspects obtained fraudulent credit
cards and gift cards, which were
used to purchase merchandise
including power tools, high-end
jewelry, TAG Heuer watches,
iPhones, Beats by Dre headphones, and cases of expensive
spirits such as Johnnie Walker
Blue Label scotch, prosecutors
said.
One of the suspects, Harpreet
Singh, 35, allegedly sold the merchandise and the credit cards and
gift cards to generate cash.
Singh and suspects Vidhi Vohra,
26, and Kunal Vohra, 23, are
accused of obtaining the false
licenses and then the credit cards

and gift cards, authorities said.

Each of them was charged with
two counts of second-degree theft.
Three other suspects, Jaswinder
Singh, 53, Saeed Choudry, 52, and
Anjum Sabar, 34, are each charged
with second-degree possession of
identifying documents to facilitate
fraud.
Another suspect, Saquib Khan,
29, is charged with two counts of
third-degree receiving stolen property.
As a result of the investigation,
approximately $540,000 in cash
was frozen in bank accounts.
Officials also recovered $75,000 in
merchandise and seized the driver's licenses and credit cards,
according to John Esmerado,
supervisor of the special prosecutions unit.

GWU cancels students suspension over Hindu Swastika

Washington, DC: Following
protests from several groups,
George Washington University has
decided to rescind its suspension
order against a student who displayed a Hindu swastika on his residence hall's bulletin board.
The Hindu American Foundation,
in a statement issued May 26, welcomed the move to rescind the
interim suspension order by the
Washington, D.C.-based university.
Harsh Voruganti, associate director of public policy for HAF, said
that the decision reects the facts of
this case and the efforts by Hindu
organizations to educate campus
ofcials about the sacredness of the
Indian swastika, according to a PTI
report.
We hope to continue to work
with the university and student
groups to provide resources on the
swastika and to further the dia-

logue, the HAF statement added.

The small, bronze swastika was
displayed by the student in March
on a bulletin board at GWU's
International House residence hall,
and mistaken by another student for
a Nazi swastika a symbol used
by the German Nazi party and other
hate groups. The student intended
to educate his friends and co-residents about the symbol's origins,
which he had learned about during
a spring break trip to India.
Although the law enforcement
authorities had found no violation,
the university proceeded with disciplinary actions against him, with
the possibility of expulsion.
A number of Hindu, interfaith,
and Jewish groups wrote to GWU
president Steven Knapp, educating
him about the signicance of the
swastika for Hindus, Buddhists,
and Jains, and urging him to avoid

expelling the student.

"The swastika is one of the most
sacred symbols of Hinduism, with a
3,000 year history of peace before
it was misappropriated by the
Nazis," said Samir Kalra, HAF senior director and Human Rights
Fellow.
"We wanted to ensure that any
Hindu, Buddhist, or Jain student
who sought to display the symbol
as a part of her faith would not be
punished for doing so," Kalra said.
Quoting Voruganti, India-West
reported that HAF had received
notication of the universitys latest
action from the student's attorneys.
I would also like to be clear that
the exact disposition of the disciplinary proceedings is condential,
but we were informed that the student will be permitted to return to
campus and rejoin classes,
Voruganti said.

Are South Asian students pushed into pursuing lucrative careers?

Shweta Lodha, a senior at Herricks High School, NY, conducted a survey to find the truth behind the stereotype of
South Asian students choosing career paths due to familial pressure rather than personal interest or talent.
or years now, certain stereotypes
have swirled around the South Asian
community. Many people often talk
about South Asian students prioritizing academics and lucrative career paths over
their own real interests. Determined to see
whether this remains true in the 21st century, I decided to investigate this straitjacketing.
Do young South Asians feel more obliged
to pursue a career path that emanates prestige and wealth over one more aligned with
their own natural inclinations? To ferret out
the truth, I conducted a random set survey
at Herricks High School, a reputed high
school in Long Island, NY, that has a student body, which is 47% Asian, 48%
Caucasian, and 5% other. Over the span of
several weeks, I handed equal numbers of
both Caucasian and South Asian students
surveys in which they had to answer in
detail whether they ever felt any pressure
from their parents to choose one career or
profession over another. Interestingly
enough, my data indicates that while South
Asians do generally face more familial
pressure to choose certain career paths correlated with success over those that more fit
their own interests, South Asian and
Caucasian students alike feel the most pressure to be successful from their school
community.
Of all South Asian survey participants,
68% confessed that they faced immense
pressure to choose a career due to familial
interference with their own autonomy,
while only 32% of Caucasian students
claimed to feel a similar way. A Caucasian
student specifically stated, I feel that my
family thinks I have a lot of potential, but

doesnt quite push me into a certain direction. They understand that its my life
choice. This indicates a significantly
greater degree of autonomy over choosing
a career than that seen among South Asian
students. For instance, a second generation
Indian student stated, I have lived both in
India and here, in Long Island, and I can
honestly say that I feel the same pressure to
be either a doctor or an engineer that I felt
back in India. I really want to do something
with theater in the future. However, my dad
has presented several arguments about the
merits of engineering over theater, and as I
result I am going to be attending an engineering college this fall."
Additionally, an overwhelmingly large
number of South Asian students admitted
that though their parents outwardly claimed
to be accepting of them choosing to follow
their own interests, they often dropped
hints that they wanted their children to
chase a high paying profession, potentially
influencing these young adults on a con-

scious or subconscious level to choose one

career path over the other.
However, interestingly enough, almost all
survey participants admitted that they felt
greater pressure from schoolmates to
choose a career or profession traditionally
viewed as more prestigious and lucrative
than from their parents themselves. For
instance, of all South Asian survey participants, 83% admitted that they often felt
pressurized to sacrifice personal interests in
favor of science, technology, engineering,
or mathematics (STEM) streams, simply
because all their peers were doing the
same thing. At the same time, 92% of
Caucasian participants confessed to have
faced similar peer pressure. For example,
one of them stated, By talking to my
friends, I have realized that in order to
make a lot of money, I cant necessarily do
a job I love.
Herricks High School has always been a
highly ranked school. Currently 30th in
New York State, and 201st in the nation,
and the highly ambitious nature of the student population has impacted the mentality
of most students, regardless of ethnicity.
While the classic stereotype that South
Asian kids feel pressure from their families
to choose lucrative and prestigious profes-

sions certainly rings true as per the survey,

more of them seem to feel greater pressure
to become successful from the competitive
nature of the society they live in than from
their own parents.
I must caution, however, that some elements of the surveying methods used to
collect data for this article should be
improved through further experimentation
to confirm the results of this survey. Firstly,
given affluence of the society surrounding
Herricks school may have influenced the
responses of survey participants. So, South
Asian and Caucasian youth from different
geographic and socioeconomic areas
should be surveyed. This will also help to
increase the sample size of the survey, and
hence, improve credibility of the survey
results. Secondly, members of more ethnic
groups should be studied for better analysis
of how pervasive this stereotype actually is.
Regardless, South Asian students at
Herricks do reinforce the traditional stereotype that South Asians at large experience
familial pressure to choose one career over
another.

'Perseverance behind Indian Americans'

dominance of National Spelling Bee'
Washington: The impressive performance of Indian
Americans at the Scripps
National Spelling Bee could
be due to their perseverance, hard work, well-educated parents and a milestone documentary that
made them realize "we
could do this", reported
Washington Post quoting
Paige Kimble, the Bees
longtime director.
The contest, which has been won by
Indian Americans for seven years in a row
and all but four of the last 15 years, gets
underway on Tuesday.
In fact, Kimble's analysis could not be
misplaced as of all the Indian American
champions in the last 15 years, only one,
Pratyush Buddiga, won the contest in his
first attempt in 2002. The others, including
last years co-champ Sriram Hathwar, won
after making several attempts.
But Kimble is concerned about the racial
aspect of the contest. Last year's champions
had to face a barrage of racist comments on

social media websites that

"indicate that we have a
long way to go as a country
in embracing all of our
immigrant population",
Kimble said.
Despite experts not sure
as to how they can explain
the impressive performance
of Indian American youngsters in the national bee
compared with other
groups, Shalini Shankar, an anthropology
professor at Northwestern University, said:
"It's hard to say it's a coincidence."
"You dont see lots of spelling bee winners who are the children of assembly line
workers or cabdrivers, even if they're South
Asian... You see children of doctors, you see
children of engineers, the Post quoted her
as saying.
Another factor that contributed to the success of Indian Americans in the contest was
a 2002 documentary, "Spellbound", which
followed eight contestants to the 1999
national bee and shows Nupur Lala's exultant victory.

Cleveland reaches deal

with US Justice
Department
Washington: Cleveland, the Ohio city where a
white policeman was acquitted on Saturday in the
fatal shooting of two African Americans, has
reached a settlement with the US Justice
Department on policing practices, The New York
Times reported.
The deal, which could be announced as early as
Tuesday, follows the verdict that prompted mainly peaceful protests after 31-year-old patrolman
Michael Brelo was found not guilty on two
counts of voluntary manslaughter in the 2012
killing. Federal authorities say the midwestern
US city engaged in a pattern of unconstitutional
policing and excessive use of force.
But similar settlements between federal authorities and US cities have seen the Justice
Department insist that the localities allow independent monitors to keep track of changes inside
police departments. They also often call for better
training and policies on the use of force.
The deal allows Cleveland to avoid a long and
costly court battle, just as civil rights activists
call for the resignation of Mayor Frank Jackson.
The verdict over the 2012 incident came amid
widespread tensions in the United States over
police treatment of blacks following the deaths of
a number of unarmed African Americans at the
hands of law enforcement.
Officials in Cleveland are looking to prevent
the kind of violent unrest that plagued Baltimore
last month after the death of a 25-year-old
African American man from injuries suffered in
police custody. Brelo was one of 13 officers who
opened fire on Timothy Russell and Malissa
Williams during a police chase on November 29,
2012. A total of 137 rounds were fired at the car,
including 49 by Brelo. He shot the final 15 after
climbing onto the hood of Russell's Chevrolet
Malibu.

Court refuses to lift hold on

Obamas immigration plan
Washington: A US appeals court
on Tuesday dealt another blow to
President Obama's efforts to grant
amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants.
The US Court of Appeals for the
Fifth Circuit in New Orleans rejected a request from the Obama administration that it lift an injunction barring it from carrying out a measure
that would have protected some four
million undocumented foreigners
from deportation.
Obama had used an executive
order in November to drive through
measure, but in February, just
before it was due to go into effect, a
Texas judge issued an emergency
injunction until a trial on its legality
could be held.
Leading House Democrat Nancy
Pelosi said the court's decision to
uphold the injunction was "a disappointing delay of a clear outcome."
"Now is the time to restore fairness to our immigration system and
honor the best traditions of our
country by passing comprehensive
immigration reform," Pelosi said in

a statement.
But House Speaker John Boehner
hailed the decision, and said Obama
did not have the authority to issue
the executive order in the first place.
"House Republicans are leading
the fight to rein in President
Obama's executive overreach and
uphold our Constitution, and we
will continue to follow this case
closely," he said in a statement.
No fewer than 26 states -- all but
two Republican -- had pressed the
Texas judge to intervene following
Obama's executive action, claiming
he had acted unlawfully.
Obama's proposed program would
protect undocumented immigrants
who have not committed crimes and
have children who are American citizens or residents.
The White House claims having
immigration authorities police millions of law-abiding undocumented
immigrants distracts them from
more pressing threats to national
security. At least 11 million undocumented immigrants live in the

the Middle East.
In an interview

Arizona Sen. John McCain, who have
argued that America's failure to arm moderate rebel groups in the Syrian civil war
created space for the Islamic State of Iraq
and Syria (ISIS) to grow.
"I would say it's exactly the opposite,"
Paul said. "ISIS exists and grew stronger
because of the hawks in our party who
gave arms indiscriminately, and most of
those arms were snatched up by ISIS.
These hawks also wanted to bomb Syrian
dictator Bashar Assad, which would have
made ISIS's job even easier."
Paul has embraced a less muscular
American approach to global events,
arguing the U.S. should be more reticent
in committing its own resources to foreign
conflicts - either by sending its U.S.
troops to intervene or sending U.S. munitions to warring parties.
That belief has put Paul at odds with
much of the rest of his party, and the
debate is already shaping the GOP's 2016

Republican hawks, like Graham, Florida
Sen. Marco Rubio, and New Jersey Gov.

or signaled they plan to declare soon.
Another prospective candidate,
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, said
Wednesday that Paul's comments
Wednesday morning are "a perfect example of why Senator Paul is unsuited to be
Commander-in-Chief."

Jindal argued, "We should all be clear

that evil and Radical Islam are at fault for
the rise of ISIS, and people like President
Obama and Hillary Clinton exacerbate
it...Senator Paul's illogical argument
clouds a situation that should provide pure
moral clarity. Islam has a problem. ISIS is

Kejriwal-Centre fight intensifies over appointments

New Delhi: The Arvind Kejriwalled Delhi government moved the
Delhi High Court, challenging the
union home ministry's May 21
notification that said Lt. Governor
Najeeb Jung has discretionary
powers for appointments and
transfers to key bureaucratic posts
in the capital.
The Delhi government mentioned the matter before a division
bench of Justice B.D. Ahmed and
Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, which
posted the hearing for Friday.
Challenging the "constitutional
validity" of the notification, the
city government sought its quashing by the high court.
The high court bench also posted for Friday a similar plea filed
by law student Vibhor Anand, who
challenged the home ministry
notification and contended the
appointment of senior bureaucrat
Shakuntala Gamlin as the acting
chief secretary by the Delhi Lt.
Governor was a "illegal".

AAP govt has challenged home ministry's notification that

Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung has discretionary powers for
appointments and transfers.

"There is already a similar petition filed by the Delhi government. We will hear both on
Friday," the bench said. The petitions, filed within days of a high
court order terming the May 21
notification as "suspect", have

Committed to provide five percent

reservation: Rajasthan to Gujjars

Nearly 4,500 paramilitary personnel have been rushed

to Rajasthan to assist the state government
in handling the Gujjar agitation.

Jaipur: The Rajasthan government has told agitating Gujjars

that it was committed to provide five percent reservation to
the community under the special backward class category.
Meanwhile, according to a
home ministry official, 4,500
paramilitary personnel have
been rushed to Rajasthan to
assist the state government in
handling the Gujjar agitation.
In a letter to Gujjar Aarkshan
Sangarsh Samiti convener Col.
(retd) Kirori Singh Bainsla, the
government, however, said: "It
will be difficult to provide 4
percent reservation from 21
percent reservation provided to
other backward class as it will
adversely affect social harmony." The letter was sent to
Bainsla after three rounds of
talks between a ministerial
committee and a delegation of

protesting Gujjars failed to

make headway.
The letter said that as per a
Supreme Court judgement, the
state government can provide
reservation in excess of 50 percent.
The Gujjars are demanding,
among others, five percent
reservation in state government
jobs under the special backward
class category and that too
according to them in the maximum permissible limit of 50
percent reservation.
The agitating Gujjars have
been squatting on railway
tracks in Pilu Ka Pura near
Bayana town since May 21.
The agitation has affected the
movement of trains, including
that on Delhi-Mumbai sector.
The protest has also affected
movement of vehicles on the
Jaipur-Agra highway.

contended that it was "ultra vires"

of the constitutional provisions,
i.e. Article 239 AA (4), and that
the Centre does not have the jurisdiction over matters connected
with services of bureaucrats in the
national capital.

"Additional Solicitor General

(ASG) Sanjay Jain informed the
high court that the Centre had also
approached the Supreme Court to
challenge the high court order that
termed 'suspect' its notification
barring Delhi government's anticorruption branch (ACB) from
acting against its officers in criminal offences."
Law student Vibhor Anand in his
PIL said: "Delhi is neither a full
state nor a union territory and
Delhi is governed by Articles 239AA and 239-AB of Constitution of
India (which deals with union territories) introduced by a constitutional amendment in 1991."
"As per Section 41 of the GNCT
Act, 1991, the Lieutenant
Governor does not have any discretion to appoint Gamlin as the
chief secretary and other such
posts, nor any special law granted
him this discretion," the petition
read.
The petitioner also said that the

Lt. Governor is "dutybound by the

aid and advice of the council of
ministers and the chief minister in
all matters that concern the legislative assembly as per Article
239 AA (4) of the Constitution of
India and Section 41 of the
Government of National Capital
Territory of Delhi Act, 1991."
The petition highlighted a
Supreme Court constitutional
bench judgment in which the
phrase "aid and advice" as used in
Article 239-AA has been interpreted "to mean that the aid and
advice of the council of ministers
and the chief minister is binding
on the Governor, it is not just
advisory."
The turf war between Chief
Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Lt.
Governor Najeeb Jung over the
control of key bureaucratic
appointments was sparked by the
appointment of Gamlin as acting
chief secretary of Delhi by the Lt.
Governor on May 15.

AAP lists 100 days achievements,

Kejriwal slams Modi
New Delhi: Delhi's AAP government on Monday listed 11 focus
areas of its work on completion
of 100 days in office as Chief
Minister Arvind Kejriwal hit out
at Prime Minister Narendra Modi
for being "dictatorial".
The Aam Aadmi Party government, which is in a tussle with
the central government over
powers related to posting and
transfer of senior officials, held a
public meeting at Central Park in
Connaught Place to mark its 100
days.
At the venue - thronged by
thousands of enthusiastic AAP
supporters who raised slogans to
back the party's claims for more
power to run the government in
Delhi - Kejriwal, accompanied
by his entire cabinet, pulled no
punches in hitting out at the
Modi government.
Listing the government's
achievements, AAP leaders said
they had ensured cheap power
and water, brought down corruption significantly and ensured
that the dwellings of the poor
were not razed.
Apparently emboldened by the
Delhi High Court's verdict on
Monday that the city government's Anti Corruption Branch
(ACB) has the "jurisdiction to

and it had nothing to fear.

"We are not fighting with the
centre, we want to work with
them. But the BJP-led central
government is imposing dictatorship in Delhi as they can not
digest the absolute majority of
the AAP in elections," he
claimed.
"We told the prime minister
that you have majority in parliament and we have it in the
assembly (Delhi). And it is a
golden opportunity to give Delhi
statehood, but this is dictatorship," Kejriwal said.
Kejriwal praised his ministers
for their work and also lauded

the bureaucrats.
"Without these officers, we
would have been zero. We have
come this far because of them,"
he said pointing towards the
bureaucrats on the dais.
Congratulating the people of
Delhi over the high court verdict
on ACB's powers, Kejriwal said:
"Earlier during our 49-day
tenure, the ACB had started a
probe against big people who
were involved in corrupt practices. Once our tenure was over,
the central government released
an order limiting the powers of
the ACB to probe Delhi government staff."

My government pro-poor, 'bure din' for corrupt: Modi

Mathura: In a speech marking the first
anniversary of his government, Prime
Minister Narendra Modi pitched his government as "pro-poor" and said it had
brought "achche din (good days)" to people
but "bure din (bad days)" to those who had
"looted" the nation.
Addressing a rally at Nagla Chandra
Bhan village -- associated with Bharatiya
Jan Sangh ideologue Deen Dayal
Upadhyay, he made veiled attacks at the
Congress over its repeated criticism of his
government as "pro-corporate" and "antipoor".
"Some people are troubled these days.
Their trouble is that 'achche din' have come
for many, but for some, 'bure din' have
come... I did not guarantee 'achche din' for
those who looted the nation for years,"
Modi said.
"Are the bad days over or not? Have bad
deeds stopped or not? Is bad thinking over
or not? Has the bad situation changed or
not? Has there been any news of scam or
nepotism for the past one year," he asked.
Referring to the Congress, he said its
voice was heard in the corridors of power
for 60 years but there is "no place for
power brokers today and bad days are natu-

ral for them". "I have stopped power brokers from having a say. These power circles are history now, there is no place for
such people." "We have delivered freedom
from bure kaam (bad work) in the past
year," Modi said, and lauded the people for
being responsible for the change.
He said there were no stories of a scam
involving "son-in-law or a son" of a political leader in the past one year and there
was no remote control.
Listing the steps taken by his government
for the poor and the farmers as well as ini-

tiatives like the direct benefit scheme,

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, Swachh
Bharat and social security schemes, he,
however, did not mention the contentious
land acquisition bill.
Referring to the controversies during the
United Progressive Alliance government
relating to coal and spectrum allocation, he
said his government had ensured transparent auctions.
"Due to coal auction, three lakh crore
rupees will be added to government coffers," he said.

Citing the remarks of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi that only 15 paise of
every rupee sent by the central government
reaches people, Modi said his government
had made efforts to ensure that there was
no leakage.
Modi said three lakh farmers had committed suicide over the past 60 years and
said his government had taken several initiatives for their benefit including an irrigation programme and steps to boost production of urea.
"We have decided to give a soil health
card to every farmer over the next three
years," he said.
"We have decided that in the next five
years, rivers will be interlinked and water
harvesting will be done. We will ensure
that farmers get adequate water and electricity in the next five years," he added.
Modi also said that the foreign fund
inflows have increased by over eight times
in the first year of his government compared to the last year of UPA government,
while tourist arrivals had increased which
will create jobs.
He also spoke about the government's
efforts to boost small and medium enterprises.

Manmohan Singh meets Modi NDA government eliminated political corruption at top: Shah

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh met Prime Minister

Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

New Delhi: Hours after rebutting

BJP's allegations of corruption
and policy paralysis against the
erstwhile UPA government, former prime minister Manmohan
Singh met Prime Minister
Narendra Modi here.
Manmohan Singh's office said
the meeting took place on an
invitation from Modi. It said the
two leaders discussed the country's economic situation and foreign policy issues.
Modi also tweeted about the
meeting that took place at his
official residence.
"Very happy to meet Dr.
Manmohan Singh ji & welcome
him back to 7 RCR (Race Course
Road). We had a great meeting,"
Modi said. Modi also shared a
photo of him welcoming Singh

at his official residence.

Earlier in the day, Singh lashed
out at the Modi government
accusing it of dismantling the
edifice of welfare state in guise
of promoting faster economic
growth.
He said the ruling BJP continues to harp on the theme of corruption as it wants to divert the
attention of the people to nonissues.
The BJP has been attacking the
former prime minister over former TRAI chairman Pradip
Baijal's allegation concerning 2G
spectrum allocations.
Baijal has alleged that Singh
had warned him of harm if he did
not cooperate on the issue of
allocation of 2G telecom
licences.

Panaji: Prime Minister Narendra

Modi's government has eliminated political corruption in high
office, BJP president Amit Shah
said.
He addressed a press conference here as part of the first year
anniversary celebrations of the
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led
National Democratic Alliance
(NDA) government at the Center.
Shah said the fact that the
opposition could not point out a
single scam in last one year
showed that Modi was heading a
corruption-free government.
"We had made a promise to the
people that we would eliminate
corruption at the top and slowly
create systems to eliminate corruption at the bottom too. If we

look back for a year, BJP's Modi

government has eliminated political corruption at the top," Shah
said.
"For 10 years, the UPA government ran in such a manner that
every minister of the government
was the prime minister of his
department. And no one respected the poor prime minister. There
were extra-constitutional power
centres. No one knew how the
government was working," he
said.
Under Modi, Shah said, the
affairs of the government were
streamlined and made more efficient.
"The BJP has restored the pride
of the Prime Minister's Office,"
Shah said.

Modi government trumpeting more than working: Congress

New Delhi: Terming it as a government of "self, selfies and selfishness", the Congress has
slammed the Bharatiya Janata
Party-led central government for
trumpeting more than actually
working in the last one year.
"This one year has been a government of self, selfies and selfishness. If the government would
have done some work, they would
not have needed to do so many
rallies... their work would have
spoken for itself," Congress
spokesperson Randeep Surjewala
said at a press conference here.
"The Modi government has
turned out to be just an event

management company. They are

trying to fool people by branding
themselves," Surjewala said.
The Congress leader said if the
central government would have
done some real work then they
would not have had to fan out
across the country to tell people
about their achievements. "Their
work would have shown."
The Congress, which was
reduced to a mere 44 seats in the
Lok Sabha in the last general
elections, released a short video
on the turnarounds made by the
Modi government in the last one
year.
It also released a booklet which

it named as the report card of the

Narendra Modi-led government
and termed the government as a
"failure".
The booklet lists the "failures"
of the Modi government and contains point by point rebuttals by
the Congress on the achievements
claimed by the NDA.
Leader of Opposition in the
Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad
said "earlier we thought the BJP
had two faces. But now we see it
has many faces".
Azad also questioned the government for not appointing heads
to many institutions, where posts
have been lying vacant.

Kolkata: Asserting the government's

commitment to cordial relations with
neighbors, union Home Minister
Rajnath Singh said India has taken
strong stand on border issues with
Pakistan and China, with Narendra
Modi being first prime minister who
"strongly raised the border issues
with China".
"Our government's constant effort
has been to maintain cordial relations
with our neighboring countries. But
as regards border security, we have
always taken a strong stand," Singh
said at a press conference here on the
Modi government completing one
year in office.
"During his visit to China, Prime
Minister Narendra Modi categorically stated India's stand on all the outstanding issues concerning China.
This is first time that an Indian prime
minister has strongly raised the border issues with China," he said.
Singh also rubbished the
Congress's charge that Modi's China

Stop making speeches, start

action: Rahul tells Modi

Kozhikode (Kerala): Congress

vice president Rahul Gandhi
asked Prime Minister Narendra
Modi to stop making speeches
and start action. In a hard-hitting
speech, Gandhi, who arrived here
on a two-day visit, time and again
referred to the Modi government
as a "suit boot government".
"While I take this opportunity to
wish the Modi government a
happy first birthday, my advice to
them is if this is the way they
carry forward, then the farmers,
laborers and the ordinary people
will not allow them to celebrate
five birthdays," he said in his
address to a massive Youth
Congress rally.
Gandhi also lashed out at the
failures of the government, especially on the land acquisition bill,
rising prices and on job creation.
"The suit boot government is
interested in protecting the interests of a few friends of Modi who
gave him money for the elections.
He wants to take land of the poor
farmers and give it to his few
friends," he said.

insisting that fishermen should

his one year has been corruptionfree.
"It was the (Congress-led) UPA
government that came out with
the Right to Information (RTI)
Act and today just look, all the
institutions that can reveal about
corruption are headless.
"This government is only interested in headlines, it's 'no action,
maximum oratory'," said Gandhi.
The Congress leader also said
that statistics point out that job
creation has slowed down by 30

percent. "He says the land bill and

creation of jobs are linked, and
says only if the bill is passed can
jobs be created, because land is
required.
"This is not true because lots of
land is held with the central and
state governments and it has been
revealed that just eight percent
projects are held up because of
shortage of land," he said.
Gandhi also condemned Modi's
statement that prices have

Modi effective but graft, land bill, inflation

remain issues: Survey
eventy-two percent of the
people feel satisfied with
the performance of Prime
Minister Narendra Modi, according to a survey on one year of his
government, but the majority
also sees no let-up in graft, and
more seem opposed to than supportive of his controversial land
acquisition bill.
According to the survey conducted by Axis My India for IBN
Network/#Modi365, the majority
of the 20,000 people polled in 23
states, across 155 districts, with a
70:30 rural-urban spread, the
main reason for satisfaction has
been overall development, skillful governance and lower prices.
The reactions of people in the
survey, shared with IANS, also
dwelt upon the policies being
pursued by the prime minister,
and notably over 35 percent did
not support the controversial land
acquisition bill, an equal number
were undecided and only 28 percent were supported it.
On corruption, which was a

major electoral plank for the

Bharatiya Janata Party in the runup to the elections last year, more
than 60 percent of the people
polled felt the levels have either
increased or seen no improvement, and just 12 percent agreed
that graft has declined.

According to the survey, 56

percent of the people felt
Narendra Modi was fast and
effective as prime minister, an
overwhelming 85 percent
endorsed Swachch Bharat as his
best initiative, and 76 percent
listed his Jan Dhan Yojana as

second best. For his two other

initiatives, Make In India
received the support of 43 percent people, Digital India got the
approval of 42 percent.
Reactions also came on some
of the controversies that hit the
government and the ruling party
during the past year.
Some 34 percent of the people
felt statements on "ghar vapsi",
or re-conversion, dented the
Modi government's image, 32
percent felt it had no impact, and
nearly 35 percent were undecided on it.
Similarly, over 43 percent
wanted Modi to rein in his cabinet colleagues who have made it
a habit to make some controversial statements, and only 26 percent disagreed with the view.
There also appeared to be no
clarity in the interference from
the Rashtriya Swayamsevak
Sangh, the ideological parent of
the ruling party of which Modi
has been a staunch member,
in the functioning of the

government.
Some 32 percent felt there was
RSS intrusion, an equal number
disagreed and 35 percent were
undecided.
Then the question: How is
Narendra Modi as prime minister? Nearly 57 percent opted for
effective and fast, 15 percent for
ineffective and slow, 2.6 percent
for no will power, 3.7 percent for
not so strict, 6.1 percent for clean
image but not a good administrator, and 13.5 percent for less
work, more talk.
Regarding the individual's economic improvement during the
year, while 42 percent of respondents felt there was "better
improvement", a little over 5.5
percent felt their condition has
worsened.
The percentages were similar
for perceptions about the overall
economic condition of the nation.
Over 43 percent felt there was
"better improvement" and over
20 percent thought there was
very good improvement.

People retain hope in Modi, but time's running out

By Amulya Ganguli
o smart cities, no bullet trains, no spike in employment, no visible improvement in infrastructure, continuing logjam over bills in parliament, carping by inhouse critics. Even then, few will say that Narendra Modi will
lose if the elections are held in the near future.
The reason is, first, the realization that one year is not a long
enough to give a definitive judgment on the performance of a
government, especially when it is emerging from the black
hole of the failures of its predecessor.
Secondly, it is also realized that Modi may have been unable
to anticipate the mischief-making potential of some of the
trouble-makers, including those within the Sangh parivar.
It is the appreciation of these difficulties by the general public which explains why he has passed muster in an opinion
poll whereas if the opposition parties are to be believed, his
government has failed miserably.
However, it is undeniable that since some of the high expectations with which Modi assumed office have begun to be
eroded, he cannot allow the present sense of drift to continue.
Unless there is a perceptible upturn in the economy in the next
12 months, the warning bells will begin to ring.
Hindsight suggests that Modi indulged in too much hyperbole during the election campaign. The bombast worked satisfactorily against the dismal backdrop of the virtually non-performing and scam-ridden Manmohan Singh government.
But, Modi's spin doctors evidently did not realize that raising expectations too high - for instance, on the recovery of
black money - carries the risk of an equally big disappointment if the hopes are not met.
The risk is all the greater because the Bharatiya Janata
Party's (BJP) main base of support at present is the notoriously impatient middle class which believes in quick results.
It was this class which gave the Congress 200-plus seats in
2009 on the basis of high growth rates (although the party's
'socialists' ascribed the good showing to its populism) and
then brought it down with a crash to 44 seats when the growth
rates tumbled.
The same fate can await Modi unless he pushes the econom-

Prime minister Narendra Modi and

BJP MP Hema Malini during a rally in Mathura.

ic reforms with much greater vigor than at present.

As may be expected, Modi's tenure has been marked by a
mixture of good and bad luck. Even as he benefited from the
falling oil prices and low inflation, unseasonal rain aggravated
the distress of farmers.
But, in political terms, the government has been a victim of
what can be deemed an exceptional case of misfortune since
its principal opponent, the Congress, has decided to adopt an
unabashedly cussed attitude.
As much is evident from the virtual u-turn it has taken on its
own economic agenda, introduced in 1991, by following what
finance minister Arun Jaitley has called an anti-growth line
which, he says, is to the "left of Marx".
As a result, crucial bills such as the Goods and Services Tax
(GST) have been held up. But, the worst obstructionism engi-

neered by the Congress relates to the land acquisition law,

which constitutes a key feature of the government's development blueprint.
Unless the law is amended, the government will be unable
to implement its "make in India" plans which aim at making
the country a manufacturing hub.
However, it is not the Congress alone which is to blame for
the stalemate. No less guilty are saffron outfits like the protectionist Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) and the anti-reforms
Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS).
Modi, therefore, is battling not only the anti-development
groups cutting across party lines, but also a widely prevalent
mindset which is deeply suspicious of the private sector and
pro-market policies.
Arguably, he has been unable to gauge the intensity of the
opposition to capitalist endeavours even within the saffron
camp though he is one of its key members.
The reason perhaps is that he never pushed this line as energetically as he is now trying to do on a national scale. If his
efforts in this direction in Gujarat were not opposed as stoutly
as the SJM, the BMS and the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS)
are doing now, it was because the pro-business policies were
confined to a state.
Modi's miscalculation has been that he did not prepare these
groups about what he intends to do on an all-India scale.
It is only belatedly that he seems to have sought the help of
the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to tame the naysayers. Earlier, the RSS had backed off on the Ram temple
issue, but had advised the BJP to listen to the saffron organizations on the reforms.
The intensification of the anti-Modi campaign by the
Congress has apparently left the government with no option
but to ask the Sangh parivar's mentor to stand by its side on
the land issue.
Whatever the impact of the interventions by the RSS, the
government doesn't have much time to lose to fulfil the expectations - "probably unrealistic", as Reserve Bank governor,
Raghuram Rajan has said - of those who voted for Modi in
large numbers in the hope that he will bring about India's economic recovery.

'Piku' crosses Rs. 100 crore mark worldwide

ilmmaker Shoojit Sircar's sliceof-life family entertainer
"Piku", a beautiful tale of a
father and a daughter's relationship,
has collected Rs.100 crore worldwide.
Featuring megastar Amitabh

which released on May 8, is continuing its successful run at the box office
even after two weeks.
"#Piku Overseas total: $5.36 million

rarely do
sequels create an impact as the
original, but in the case of "Tanu Weds
Manu Returns", the intensity is as forceful or more than the original. Once again
packed with sharp and witty dialogues,
fine performances and a feel-good factor, "Tanu Weds Manu Returns" excels
as a scaled-up family entertainer.
This sequel takes off from where it left
in the previous edition in 2011 and
returns with the lead pair after four years
of jaded bliss. Their marriage is now on
the rocks. Tanuja Trivedi aka Tanu is as
moody as she was and he, Manoj
Sharma aka Manu is at the end of his
tether. Still in London, their divorce is
inevitable after Tanu manages to ensure
that Manu is kept back in St. Benedict
Mental Hospital in Twickenham in
Britain. She returns to Kanpur to her
family. Manu too returns forlorn to India
where he lands up meeting Kusum
Sangwan, who is Tanu's lookalike.
Seemingly in love with Kusum, he
decides to remarry.
With well-etched but flawed characters, the performance of each actor is
noteworthy. Kangana steals the show
with the dual role she essays. In both her
characters, she is distinct in her sartorial

style, speech and mannerisms. As Tanu,

she is an extension of herself as portrayed in the earlier edition. But as
Kusum Sangwan, a Haryanvi athlete,
she brings out a sharp contrast, exhibiting her prowess as an actress. Kusum's
simplicity and sincerity get you emotionally attached to her.
R. Madhavan complements her with
his overall subtle and restrained performance. He plays the traumatised husband to the hilt. But he also hits the right
high-pitched notes convincingly as the
harassed husband at the mental hospital.
Of the rest of the supporting cast,
Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub as advocate
Arun Kumar Singh is vibrant. With his
casual, yet evocative performance, he
displays sparks of brilliance. Deepak
Dobriyal as Pappi, Manu's confidante is
over-the-top. He is repetitive and after a
while, is jarring in the narration.
Jimmy Sheirgill as Raja Awasthi has a
few scenes where he makes his presence
felt as the unlucky man-in-love. Swara
Bhaskar as Payal along with Eijaz Khan
as Jassi, make a fine pair and are fairly
noticeable. Conceived as a realistic film,
the production quality is apt and cinematographer Chirantan Das's frames are
atmospheric. They capture the small

Also starring Ranveer Singh, Priyanka Chopra, Shefali
Shah, Farhan Akhtar and Anushka Sharma, "Dil
Dhadakne Do" (DDD) is a family film, said the 58year-old veteran.
"It is a family film. It is a Zoya Akhtar film so it has a
distinct style. It is a film which you can easily say is
world-standard," Anil said here on Sunday while promoting the film. Set for a June 5 release, DDD also has
another character - a dog named Pluto - which, according to Anil, is the real hero of the flick.
"Pluto is the real hero of the film. We all make up the
ensemble around him. He is the real rockstar," said
Anil, the father of actress Sonam. Talking about his
role, the "Slumdog Millionaire" actor said people will
notice a difference in his look. "I am tired of people
asking me about there being no difference over the

is why I did the film. You will see the difference (faraq

YOGA

May 30-June 5, 2015

By Parveen Chopra
he practice of yoga even if
it is only asanas or postures
as is ubiquitous today - can
serve as a window to the holistic
and perennial philosophy of India.
Frankly, the term Indian philosophy is a misnomer. The Sanskrit
equivalent is Darshan, which
denotes seeing, witnessing, experiential learning. The font of Indian
philosophy are, of course, the
Vedas, which are considered
apaurashya, meaning they are not
what somebody wrote down, but a
record of what our rishis (literally,
seers) experienced in their consciousness. The truths and knowledge dawned in their consciousness
after preparatory practices and
tapas.
Yoga is one of the six systems of
Indian philosophy (Shat Darshan)
that take their authority from the
Vedas. These are Nyaya,
Vaisheshik, Samkhya, Yoga, Purva
Mimansa and Uttar Mimansa
(Vedanta). There is enough play
given to logic (as in Nyaya), or theoretical exposition of consciousness (as in Samkhya). But in time,
Yoga and Vedanta have emerged as
the cornerstone of Vedic religion,
full flowering of the long-standing
Indian tradition: Vedanta reaching
the highest and noblest understanding of the ultimate reality as pure
consciousness that underlies all creation animate and inanimate; and
yoga offering practical and timetested ways and means asanas,
pranayama and meditation - to
experience that pure consciousness
first hand. This is also considered

the royal spiritual path- Raja Yoga.

True, most of us, caught up in our
mundane lives and struggles, are
not worried overmuch about esoteric subjects like the ultimate reality, or pure consciousness. Yet we
all wish for health and happiness.
That is where yoga appeals. Once
you attend a yoga class, you notice
right away how it goes beyond
mere physical exercise. The structured set of asanas also relaxes the
body and mind, creating equanimi-

ty. The health and other benefits of

yoga are well-known (we will
review them in another article in
this series) and the reason the western world has cottoned on to this
Indian import.
But, it will be worthwhile putting
asanas in the context of the complete discipline of yoga
Patanjalis ashtanga yoga or eightlimbed system as expounded in
only 196 pithy sutras in his treatise
titled Yoga Darshan. The eight parts

are: Yama, Niyama, Asana,

Pranayama, Pratyhara, Dharana,
Dhyan and Samadhi. Yama (like
nonviolence and truthfulness) and
Niyama (like purity and contentment) are donts and dos which are
commandments universal in nature
and common with ethical practices
of world religions. They are suggested but not a pre-requisite to
starting the practice of asanas and
meditation. In fact, the system of
yoga is as secular as you can get.
You are not asked to worship any
Hindu deity or sacred book, or have
belief in God or a supreme power.
Yoga can even claim to be scientific. As in any science experiment, if
you practise yogic techniques properly and regularly, results are bound
to accrue precisely like in H2+O
making water. Asanas are physical
postures. Pranayama is breathing
practices. Pratyhara is withdrawal
of the senses from sense objects.
Dharana is concentration and cultivating inner perceptual awareness.
Besides devising the elaborate
sets of asanas and breathing techniques, what tells Vedic religion
and yoga apart from Occidental
religions is in the enormous R&D
in meditation or Dhyan, the seventh
limb of yoga. Numerous practices,
varying in complexity and degree
of difficulty, have come down to us,
thanks mainly to the guru-shishya
parampara and the oral tradition.
They are better learnt from a
teacher; some are easily accessible
like Transcendental Meditation or
TM as taught by Maharishi Mahesh
Yogi of the Beatles fame.
Buddhism too digged deep into
states of mind and developed medi-

Samadhi is the meditative absorption attained by the practice of

AAP in power: 100* not out

Dr. Munish Kumar Raizada
hey say that With great power comes great responsibility. But in a democracy, With great mandate,
comes a great responsibility. The unprecedented
mandate given to the Aam Aadmi Party in the recent Delhi
elections meant that expectations of Delhis citizens from
the new kid on the block were sky high. Now with the
Delhi Governments 100 day anniversary overlapping with
one year anniversary of the Modi Government at the centre,
many political pundits have taken out their yellow legal
pads and drawn a point by point comparison of the performance showed by the respective Governments.
It is amusing to note that even decades old political parties fail to get the kind of scrutiny offered to AAP ever since
its inception. The AAP government in Delhi remains the
most reported state Government in the country. While others may get bogged down by such intense scrutiny, AAP has
happily taken it in its stride and involved the aam aadmi at
every possible step of decision making. AAPs 100 days
journey has seen many hits and a few misses. A flashback
of some of the major decisions taken by the Delhi
Government in the past 100 days might just remind us why
the people of Delhi chose AAP over others.

1031 rings all day long

Political parties in India have a simple rule. Come to power,
enjoy for 4 years, fulfil a couple of promises from the manifesto in the fifth year, make a new manifesto with the same
points for next election! So when AAP got down to work
from the very first day, it raised many eyebrows. AAP wasted little time in re-introducing the corruption helpline 1031
and got the ball rolling on its most critical election promise
eradication of corruption. The helpline got 12,731 calls in
the first 24 hours of its operation. By the time the helpline
had completed one month, it had received over 1.25 lakh
calls, resulting in 25 arrests, including that of a Delhi Police
constable. As of writing this piece, more than 35 officials
have been arrested and 152 suspended. Investigations into
the complaints are handled by the Anti-Corruption Bureau
(ACB), which comes under the direct purview of the Delhi
Government thus enabling speedy resolutions.

Dipping electricity &

water bills

One of the most striking features of the 100day tenure of AAP government has been a
large dip in electricity and water bills.
Thousands of people have come out in the
open and accepted that their electricity bills
have dropped by over 50% ever since AAP
assumed power. At a time when discoms
have expressed their desire to increase the
electricity rates citing financial losses, the AAP
Government has shown immense courage in taking
the fight to the discoms, which are run by some of the
most influential families in the country. Without any
support from any other political party, AAP continues to
stick its neck out and demand a CAG audit of the discoms
to derive their actual running cost and to see if they are
actually running into any loss at all. Within the first 100
days, the AAP has started to make holes in the Nexus
between the power discoms and the well-established political class, which exemplifies crony capitalism.

Bringing Delhis Government schools

back to life
Delhis municipal schools are in a despicable condition.
Interestingly, this fact is no secret. But that didnt push any
of the previous Governments to look in the school system in
Delhi and revamp it. After AAP came to power, Education
Minister Manish Sisodia took it upon himself to see Delhis
school system up close and personal. A number of surprise
inspections were made and many teachers were found missing from their duty. Such unprecedented steps have
increased the accountability on part of the teachers. A number of mid-day suppliers were also pulled up by the
Minister for supplying low quality food to the kids. Such
inspections have now become a routine in the capital.

Ensuring capitals well being

Mr. Satyendra Jain has been a busy man from Day 1 of the

swearing of the government. Health minister in the AAP

Government, Jain can be seen conducting visits to the hospitals very often. He has also given his phone number and
e-mail address to all the doctors in Government hospitals
and asked them to get in touch with him at any time for
any matter which is related to patient care.
In February, Delhi was hit by a major swine flu outbreak.
The AAP Government put its best foot forward in perhaps
its first big test after assuming power. The Government was
quick to put Rs 4500 cap on the swine flu tests conducted at
any private lab in the capital.
In fact, a number of private labs were also served notices
after they were found violating this directive. The Health
Minister has committed to several reforms in the health care
sector, notably increasing the bed capacity in hospitals,
strengthening primary health care access and digitization of
medical records.
Many other notable achievements of AAP have gone
unnoticed, including asking for peoples suggestion for the
states budget, fulfilment of promises to the Auto Rickshaw
drivers, digitization of government processes, asking for
publics suggestion on the city-wide Wi-Fi program and
much more. If the past 100 days are any indication, AAP
Government seems on track to fulfil much of its pre-poll
promises and more, with some time to spare.

Bail denied, 'flash crash' trader to remain in jail

London: The UK high court has
denied an appeal by an Indian-origin
lone trader, fighting extradition to
America for his alleged role in the
2010 Wall Street "flash crash" which
wiped nearly $1 trillion off the value
of US shares, to vary his 5 million
pound bail condition.
Navinder Singh Sarao, accused of
contributing to the Wall Street "flash
crash" five years ago, had requested
that his bail conditions be relaxed as
his assets had been frozen. The court
decision means the 36-year-old will
remain in custody while fighting his
extradition to the US.
"There's no substantial reassurance
that this applicant is not a flight risk,"
said Judge Ross Cranston at a hearing
in London.
Sarao has been granted UK government funded legal aid to pay his legal
team after he claimed that he had
been prevented from paying his
lawyers or meeting his bail conditions by a worldwide assets freeze
order by US authorities.
Legal aid, aimed at ensuring equal

access to justice, is made available to

people otherwise unable to afford
legal representation. Sarao is fighting
extradition to the US on 22 counts of
fraud and commodity manipulation in
the multi-million pound case.
His lawyers asked that he be freed
to await a full hearing on his extradition in September based on 50,000
pounds provided as security by his
parents. The request was refused
leading to the high court appeal
application.
Sarao was arrested last month after
the US Department of Justice (DoJ)
claimed he had made 27 million
pounds by "spoofing" financial markets using commercially available
trading software to place 128 million
pounds of false trades from his parents' home in Hounslow, west
London.
The US authorities claim Sarao's
supposed manipulation contributed to
the flash crash on 6 May 2010, when
the Dow Jones industrial average
plunged 600 points in five minutes
and created havoc on Wall Street.

IS projects scenario of attacking US with nuke from Pak

Washington: The Islamic State
(IS) Sunni radical outfit has projected a scenario in which it
launches a nuclear attack on US
soil with a weapon purchased
from Pakistan.
In the latest edition of Daboq,
IS's glossy online, an article,
headlined The perfect storm,
suggested that the terrorist outfit
can use the billions of dollars in
its coffers to buy a nuclear device
through weapons dealers with
links to corrupt officials.
The Islamic State has billions
of dollars in the bank, so they call
on their wilayah (branch) in
Pakistan to purchase a nuclear
device through weapons dealers
with links to corrupt officials in

the region, the article attributed

to John Cantile, a British journalist kidnapped by the IS in
November 2012, stated.
The weapon is then transported overland until it makes it to
Libya, where the mujahidin move
it south to Nigeria. Drug shipments from Columbia bound for
Europe pass through West Africa,
so moving other types of contraband from East to West is just as
possible, the article full of outrageous claims stated.
The nuke and accompanying
mujahidin arrive on the shorelines
of South America and are transported through the porous borders
of Central America before arriving in Mexico and up to the bor-

der with the United States. From

there its just a quick hop through
a smuggling tunnel and hey
presto, theyre mingling with
another 12 million illegal aliens
in America with a nuclear bomb
in the trunk of their car.
While admitting that such a scenario was far-fetched, it said that
its the sum of all fears for
Western intelligence agencies and
its infinitely more possible today
than it was just one year ago.
The article also claimed that
huge swathes of Pakistan,
Nigeria, Libya, Yemen, and the
Sinai Peninsula are all now united
under the black flag of tawhid,
gelled together as one by the
Islamic State.

Axact CEO held in Pak over fake

diplomas expose by NYT
Karachi: Pakistani investigators arrested
the chief executive of Axact, a software
company accused of running a global
diploma mill, early Wednesday after discovering a storage room filled with blank
fake degrees.
The chief executive, Shoaib Ahmed
Shaikh, and four other Axact executives
were initially charged with fraud, forgery
and illegal electronic money transfers, law
enforcement officials said. The charges
were later expanded to include money
laundering and violating Pakistans electronic crimes act.
The arrests were a sharp blow to a company that claimed to be Pakistans biggest
software exporter and that was on the cusp
of starting a major TV network. Axact has
been under investigation since May 19,
after an article in The New York Times
described how the company had made millions of dollars by running hundreds of
fake online education websites.
Since then, federal investigators have
sealed Axact offices in Karachi and
Islamabad and requested help from Interpol
and the F.B.I. Mr. Shaikh sought to defend
himself in a series of television interviews
and video appeals, and asked the courts to
halt the investigation.
But his legal move proved unsuccessful,
and late Tuesday, after hours of questioning, he led investigators to a building next
to the Axact headquarters in the upscale
Karachi neighborhood of Defence.
Inside, they found a room filled with
blank certificates bearing the letterheads of
dozens of fake universities and high

Israel, Hamas warn each other after fresh attacks

Tel Aviv/Gaza: Israeli Defense
Minister Moshe Yaalon has
warned the Islamic Hamas movement to refrain from any attempt
to fire rockets at Israel, after a
Tuesday night rocket attack in the
south even as Hamas held Tel
Aviv responsible for the escalation of tensions between the two
sides.
The rocket fired from Gaza
landed in Gan Yavne town, some
56 km west of Jerusalem.
"If there won't be quiet in
Israel, Gaza will pay a very
heavy price," Yaalon said.
The defense minister also
blamed the Islamic Jihad, a
smaller militant organization
from Gaza, for Tuesday night's
rocket attack.
The Israeli air force struck four
targets in the Gaza Strip in
response to the overnight rocket
attack. Yaalon said the air strikes
targeted Islamic Jihad and Hamas
bases in the Gaza Strip.
Peter Lerner, the Israeli air
force spokesman, said the strikes
were a direct response to Hamas.
"The reality that Hamas's territory is used as a staging ground
to attack Israel is unacceptable

However, no casualties were
reported.
It was the first intensive Israeli

UN chief praises Ireland's marriage

equality referendum
Dublin: UN Secretary General Ban Kimoon has praised the result of Ireland's marriage equality referendum, describing it as
"truly historic moment". "This is a truly historic moment: Ireland has become the first
country in the world to approve marriage
equality in a nationwide referendum," Ban
said on Sunday after he accepted the
Tipperary International Peace Award in
Ballykisteen, south Ireland's County
Tipperary. "The result sends an important
message to the world: All people are entitled
to enjoy their human rights no matter who
they are or whom they love," he said.
Ireland has approved same-sex marriage
with 1.2 million people voting in its favor.
Ireland voted in a referendum -- whether the
Constitution should be changed so as to
extend civil marriage rights to same-sex couples. He also said the peace award pays tribute to him but also to the work of the UN.

'Irish vote for gay marriage a defeat for humanity'

Vatican City : Last weekend's referendum vote in Ireland to approve same-sex marriage
was "a defeat for humanity," the Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, said.
"The Irish referendum is a defeat for humanity. I was deeply saddened by the result," he
said on Wednesday in comments to Italian media, reports Efe.
"The archbishop of Dublin (Diarmuid Martin) has said that church must take account of
this reality, but in the sense that it must strengthen its commitment to evangelisation,"
Parolin said. "I think that you cannot just talk of a defeat for Christian principles," but
also "a defeat for humanity," Parolin said at an award ceremony. The Republic of Ireland,
where until recently the Catholic Church wielded enormous power, became on Saturday
the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage by popular vote. Just over 62
percent of those who cast ballots in the referendum voted "yes."

DD Kisan channel calls for

big change in agriculture
New Delhi: Calling for a "big
change" in agriculture, Prime
Minister Narendra Modi launched
the DD Kisan channel and pitched
for increasing average productivity
of paddy to three tonnes per hectare
from the present two tonnes.
Launching the channel on the
first anniversary of his government,
Modi said the agriculture sector had
been "neglected" and there was
need to make the sector "vibrant".
He said 50 percent of farmers
would not know if there is an agricultural department of the government.
"There is need for a big change in
agriculture... It has been left to the
fate of farmers," he said.
Modi said that if the country has
to move forward, villages must
make progress and if villages are to
progress, it was essential for agriculture to grow.
Modi, who was repeatedly
cheered by the gathering during his
nearly 45-minute speech, gave
many suggestions to boost farm
income. "Agriculture should be
divided into three parts. Try this
experiment and agriculture can be

Charter to buy Time Warner

Cable in $56 bn deal
New York: John Malone's
Charter Communications has
struck a $56 billion deal to buy
Time Warner Cable Inc, seeking
to combine the third- and second-largest US cable operators
to better compete against market
leader Comcast.
Charter, in which Malonechaired Liberty Broadband
owns about 26%, offered about
$195.71 in cash-and-stock for
each Time Warner Cable share
based on Charter's closing price
on May 20, the companies said
in a statement.
Pay TV companies such as
Time Warner Cable and Charter
have been experiencing slowing
growth over the years as customers access TV shows and
movies over the internet through

services provided by Netflix and

Hulu.
These traditional TV companies are now beefing up their
fast-growing, higher-margin
internet businesses through consolidation and partnerships.
Charter's current bid is much
higher than its first proposed
deal, which Time Warner Cable
rejected last year. It is also higher than the $45 billion offer
Time Warner Cable had accepted from Comcast.
Comcast nixed the agreement
last month because of regulatory
concerns that the company
would sap too much competition out of the broadband market.
Charter said it will form a new

the country will be again connected
to agriculture and provide a new

Two FIFA vice presidents, 12 others charged in US probe

New York: The US Justice Department
has charged 14 individuals - including two
current FIFA vice presidents and seven
other world football officials - with offenses including racketeering, wire fraud and
money laundering conspiracies.
It also said in a release that the 47-count
indictment, unsealed in federal court in
Brooklyn, New York, is "not the final
chapter" in the wide-ranging and ongoing
investigation.
The announcement by Attorney General
Loretta Lynch, accompanied at a press

Swiss authorities arrested seven of the 14
defendants charged in the indictment.

Caymanian Jeffrey Webb, who is also
president of the Confederation of North,
Central American and Caribbean association football, known as CONCACAF - as
well as the former president of the South
American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), Paraguayan Nicolas Leoz.
Both Figueredo and Webb were arrested
early on Wednesday by Swiss authorities,
who acted at the request of the US.
Trinidad and Tobago's Jack Warner, a
former FIFA vice president and ex-president of CONCACAF, also was among the
14 defendants indicted.

IPL 2015: In the arena of youngsters, 'golden oldies' shimmer

Kolkata: Cricket's shortest format is usually said to be suited for
the fresh legs and young blood
but a number of players in the latest edition of Indian Premier
League (IPL) have yet again
proved that age is just a number.
If 17-year-old Sarfaraz Khan
fearlessly hitting bowlers is a
sight to behold, veterans like
Ashish Nehra, Chris Gayle and
Brad Hogg have turned back the
clock and literally made the adage
'old is gold' come true.
Spearheading the Chennai
Super Kings (CSK) pace attack,
Nehra stood out scalping 22
wickets at 20.40 runs apiece.
"I have got three Man-of-theMatch awards this season and that
says it all. It is not easy for a fast
bowler to pick up that many
awards in one season. People are

Twenty20s," the left-armer said.
Mumbai Indians' 35-year-old
offie Harbhajan Singh yet again

showed why he is called a fighter.

The feisty cricketer sizzled with
the ball, and at times even with
the bat, to play a crucial role in
his team winning their second
IPL crown.

Bowling with his usual guile,

the 'Turbanator' took 2/26 against
CSK in Qualifier 1 to take
Mumbai to their third final. In the
summit clash at the Eden
Gardens, he yet again proved to
be Chennai's nemesis, scalping
the prized wickets of dangerous
opener Dwayne Smith and middle-order mainstay Suresh Raina.
With 18 wickets to his name in
IPL-8 and a 19-ball fifty to boast,
the selectors did fulfil the man's
'burning desire' to play for India
again as he made a comeback to
the national Test squad for the
Bangladesh tour after more than
two years.
Yet another 'oldie' who has
drawn the spotlight is Kolkata
Knight Riders' (KKR) chinaman
bowler Bradd Hogg. At 44 - the
oldest player in IPL history - the

Australian made full use of the

limited chances he was offered.
Besides bamboozling the batsmen, he was also a livewire on
the field.
CSK all-rounder Dwayne
Bravo, who took 26 wickets to
win the purple cap, is also no
youngster. At 32, the Trinidadian
was skipper Mahendra Singh
Dhoni's go-to-man and his knack
to pick up wickets at crucial junctures powered the team to their
sixth IPL final, although they faltered at the last hurdle losing to
Mumbai Indians by 41 runs.
Delhi Daredevils did finish a
poor seventh in the standings, but
their 36-year-old South African
leg-spinner Imran Tahir earned
plaudits. Picking up 15 wickets,
he contributed significantly in the
team's five victories in 14 games.

David B. Samadi: The untold story of

a world renowned surgeon
Of the more than 6,000 prostate cancer surgeries Dr Samadi
of New York has performed in the past decade using the
Samadi Modified Advanced Robotic Treatment (SMART) that
he invented and pioneered, almost 90% of his patients
became cancer free an amazing success rate. Here he
recounts his personal story of having to flee as a teen without
his parents from Iran, where Jews were the target of hatred.
By Robert Golomb
havent purposely kept it a
secret, but there is a major part
of the story of my life that very
few people know about, world
renowned urologist/surgeon and
(Fox) television and (am 970)
radio health and medical commentator David B. Samadi told me
when I interviewed him in his
mid-town Manhattan office last
week.
Since practically every interviewer has questioned me only on
my work as a doctor and surgeon,
and my commentaries on health
and medicine on television and
radio cover only medical and
health related issues, this story of
my past personal life has not really
surfaced, explained Dr Samadi,
48. That explanation made sense.
Still, as I sat waiting to learn what
this personal story might be, I
couldnt help thinking that however interesting the personal tale he
was getting ready to talk about
might be, it was unlikely to be as
interesting as his universally
acclaimed work in medicine.
The Chairman of Urology and
the Chief of Robotic Surgery at
Lenox Hill Hospital and named to
the prestigious Castle Connoly
Americas Top Doctors and New
York Magazines Best Doctors
List, Samadi, who specializes in
the diagnosis and treatment of urologic disease and prostate, kidney
and bladder cancers, has won that
acclaim as a result of his remarkable history of success as a surgeon. Researching Samadi in
preparation for this interview, I
became struck by, among many
others, this one particular example, of that success: Of the more
than 6,000 prostate cancer surgeries he has performed the past
decade using the Samadi Modified
Advanced Robotic Treatment
(SMART) that he invented and
pioneered, almost 90% of his

patients became cancer free, a

heretofore unheard of success rate
for this deadly form of cancer.
That success rate - coupled by
studies showing that Dr Samadis
surgical prostate cancer patients
experienced marked reductions in
blood loss, complaints of pain and
days of stay in the hospital compared to patients studied who have
undergone conventional treatments - has further added to his
prominence in the international
medical community.
So it was an easy journalistic
decision, I thought. I would perfunctorily discuss Samadis personal story and then quickly move
the interview back to medicine
and his medical career, the originally planned topics. I changed
that plan, however, soon after
hearing his first few words.
If you read my biography off
the Internet, you will learn that I
was born and raised as a Jew living in the Persian Jewish community of Iran.
You also will learn that in 1982,
three years after the Iranian revolution began, I, just 15 years old
then, and my younger brother,
Dan, then only 12, moved first to
Belgium and then 6 month later to
London, England, until we finally
immigrated to America from there
in 1984. There is not, as you no
doubt saw, any mention of my
parents. But still virtually everyone assumes we went with them.
But we didnt. And you will not
find that important part of my life
on the Internet. I feel it is now the
right time to discuss it, beginning
with how my life changed with the
coming
of
the
Iranian
Revolution.
Somehow I failed to connect the
historical and the personal dots
until that moment. But suddenly I
could. Persian Jews have a collective history in their country going
back almost three millennium, living many of those centuries in

peace and many others under murderous persecution. With the

ascent to leadership in 1925 of the
secular Pahlavi Dynasty, ruled
first by Reza Khan Pahlavi and
then in 1941 by his son,
Mohammad (the Shah of Iran), the
Jewish Community had once
again found peace. But 54 years
later, with the advent of the
Iranian revolution in 1979, along
with the rise to power of the
Ayatollah Khomeini, Jews found
themselves the target of hatred
once again.
Preaching venomous sermons
against Jews and Israel, Khomeini
waged a campaign of murder and
intimidation against the suddenly
powerless Jewish community.
Dozens of Jews were quickly
arrested, tried and executed as
spies. Within three years after the
revolution, approximately 60,000
of the then 100,000 Jews in the
country, fearing for their lives,
fled to Israel, the United States or
Western Europe. Two of the latter
were David and Dan Samadi, but
not the rest of their family.
Dan and I were allowed to
leave Iran but my father, who was
a successful businessman, and my
mother were not allowed to leave,
and they kept my five year old sister Heidi with them because she
was too young to be left to the
care of a fifteen year old, Samadi
explained. It was a very sad and
frightening time. As my brother
and I kissed our mother, father and
sister good bye at the Tehran
Airport, I didnt know whether or
not we would ever see them
again.
After their brief six-month stay
in Brussels, David and Dan emigrated to London, where their
family had been able through an
intermediary to make arrangements for their room, board and
schooling, leaving them, however,
other than that, totally on their
own. Samadi described those liv-

ing arrangements. All our living

expenses and schooling had been
paid for in advance by my parents,
so we had no concern about our
day to day living. We lived in a
type of boarding house run by a
middle aged couple in northern
London, an area called Golders
Green, and we both attended a private school nearby. While the
woman and her husband were nice
and decent people, they did not
attempt to take the place of our
parents, even on a temporary
basis, nor, in truth, did we want
them to.
Samadi recalled how he and his
brother eventually learned to cope
with this new lonely life that had
been thrust upon by them. At
first, it was very tough. Dan and I
would cry ourselves to sleep
almost every night, he recalled.
Like any teenager would, I
missed my school friends, who
came from all religious backgrounds, Christian, Muslim and
Jewish, and I missed playing on
the soccer team, where I was the
captain.
But mostly, he elaborated,
Dan and I missed our fathers hugs
and our moms and sisters kisses.
We felt sad, and worse still, we
felt sorry for ourselves. But then,
as the months began to pass, we
realized that the way to honor our
parents, whom we were able to
only occasionally speak with over
the telephone, was not to sit
around pitying ourselves but
rather to succeed. We both worked
very hard at school, where we
both excelled in science. It was
very soon after that Dan and I
began to dream that we would
become doctors one day. That
dream also helped us combat our
loneliness, but it still remained a
part of us.
While that loneliness continued
even after Dan and David moved
to Roslyn, NY in the USA in 1982,
they became happier in their new

surrounding. The living arrangements in America were similar to

those we had in London. The difference was that Dan and I fell in
love with America. It didnt
diminish our loneliness, but the
love we felt for our country, just
living in this beautiful and free
land, helped the next six years go
by just a bit faster, Samadi
explained.
Those six years of life in
America also became quite productive for both brothers. Dan
and David continued to excel first
in high school and then college.
By 1990, David had completed his
first year Stony Brook School of
Medicine with honors and Dan
was running an A average as a
pre-med student in New York
University. As loving brothers
we celebrated each others academic success, Samadi recalled.
We were confident our dreams of
becoming doctors would come
true. But we couldnt feel any real
happiness because rather than subside, the loneliness we felt for our
family only grew as each day
passed without them.
That loneliness was to soon end.
Giving in to intense pressure from
the George Bush White House, the
Ayatollah in 1990 allowed most,
but sadly not all, of the remaining
Jews held hostage since the revolution to finally leave Iran.
Manoucher, Forough and Heidi
Samadi were among those permitted to leave.
Samadi said seeing his parents
and sister exit the door of their airplane at JFK Airport on a hot day
in June 1990 was the happiest
experience in his and Davids
lives. We just hugged and
embraced and cried and spoke the
wonderful words of love to our
parents and sister whom we hadnt
seen in eight long years.
In that glorious moment, my life
had come together. I had done

well in my first year of medical
school and was confident I
would be able to graduate, pass
all the required exams, and
become a doctor one day. And I
thanked God that my family
would be there with me to share
my journey.
They were and did. And as the
doctor gave me an update on the
Samadi family that had overcome so much, I could easily
detect the sound of pride in his
voice. My parents are alive and
well living happily in Long
Island, enjoying their children
and grandchildren, all with
homes relatively close by, and
seeing them living the American
dream, said Samadi. Heidi
became a dentist, married a wonderful man and is bringing up
three great children. Dans
dream came true.
He is an ear, nose and throat
specialist, has a great wife and
three adorable kids. Being happily married seems to run in the
family. I married an extraordinary woman and have been
blessed with two happy and
healthy kids, a boy and a girl.
What also runs through the

entire Samadi family is our love,

loyalty and devotion to the
United States of America.
About his reasons for telling
this story now, Samadi offered
two. The first, he explained, concerned the current heated debate
over the Obama Administrations
nuclear weapons negotiations
with Iran. I have learned a
great deal that might be relevant
to understanding Iran and the
current crisis. My family was
forced to flee for their lives from
a country in which their ancestors had lived for generations,
he stated. So I understand better than most, he asserted, the
dangers of the Ayatollahs brand
of deadly fanaticism. And I
understand that any policy on
Iran and its nuclear ambitions
must be based on the premise
that Iran under its current
government presents an existential threat not only to
Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and
Saudi Arabia, but to the
entire world. So it must not
be allowed to develop
nuclear weapons.
But there is another reality in
Iran that I learned from my first
15 years of life living there, he
added. That reality is the good-

HEALTH
ness of its people, all of whom Muslim, Christian and Jews lived in peace and harmony for
two generations until the
Ayatollah came to
p o w e r .
Americas policy on Iran, I
believe, must
be determined
by both of
these realities.
The second

Jaipur foot steps up in Bangladesh

Dhaka: The ambience of
National
Institute
of
Traumatology and Orthopedic
Rehabilitation (NITOR) popularly known as Pongu Hospital in
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka is
not a pleasant one. Aside from
murky lighting, uncomfortable
odors and occasional groans from
patients, one would frequently
encounter people with varying
degrees of limb-less-ness.
Room No 102 on the ground
floor is a bit different though. It
looks more like a mannequin factory than a hospital. But instead
of the whole body, the machine
there produces body parts like
feet and hands.
Starting early May, the room
was for a few weeks only been
producing prosthetic lower limbs.
Its light. The movement is
more fluid with this, said
Fawzia, a 23 year old female who
was found wearing a new pair of
the famous Jaipur Foot. Fawzia
had a horrible accident three
years back. She was run over by a
bus at Dhanmondi and lost both
her legs.
I have been wearing a pair of
artificial legs for the last few
years. It cost me Taka 76,000.
Now I am getting these Jaipur
feet for free. Its way better than
the ones I had earlier, said
Fawzia.
Of course its better. The
Jaipur Foot and Knee are made of
self-lubricating, oil-filled nylon

Facts
Founded in 1975 with less than $10,000, Jaipur Foot is now operating with an annual budget of $3.5M, and funded by donations, government support and earned income.
About 60% of the budget is a collection of donations, small or big,
and from India or abroad. Roughly 30% of the budget is in the form of
government grants, and the remaining 10% is met by their own income
on the corpus built up over time.
In 1975, during their first year of operation, the Jaipur Foot team
fitted 59 limbs. Today, nearly 400,000 people have such limbs fitted. In
addition, there are mobile clinics setup in 26 countries around the
world, including the war torn regions of Iraq, Afghanistan and Sudan.
The Jaipur foot costs about $21 to make. [The beneficiary of
course pays nothing]. It can be made by an averagely skilled team of
five, which can produce 15 limbs a day.

Fawzia, 23, who lost both her legs when she was run over by
a bus, was helped at the camp in May in Dhaka by the Jaipur
based Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti.

artificial limb fitments to the disabled of Bangladesh.
Prakash Bhandari who is leading the camp said, a total of 500
of Bangladesh's poorest amputees
were fitted with artificial limbs
free of cost. The camp was sponsored by Bangladesh Orthopedic

Industries. About the world
famous Jaipur Foot, Bhandari
said, the beauty of the Jaipur Foot
is its lightness and mobility, as
those who wear it can run, climb
trees and pedal bicycles. One of
Jaipur foots knee replacements
developed in cooperation with
Stanford University costs a mere
$20, and was named one of the
50 best inventions in the world by
Time Magazine.
Showing a sample of that
famous knee, Bhandari said:
Thats a marvelous invention.
He said all of the Jaipur feet are
custom fitted. At first we select
the amputee, then we take his/her
measurements. After that, our
team produces the limbs, he
said. It is superior to its counterpart Solid Ankle Cushion Heel
(SACH) in certain ways, mainly

in the range of movements it

offers. The articulation at the 'ankle' allows not only inversioneversion movements but also dorsiflexion (essential for squatting,
standing up from prone position,
etc.) and a shorter keel helps
achieve this.
Also, the materials used at the
foot-end are waterproof and moderately mimic a real foot.
Bhandari said that during the 20day camp, approximately 25
patients were treated each day.
About 1000 patients were
screened by NITOR and 500
selected on the basis of medical
criteria laid down by BMVSS,
added Bhandari. This is our second trip to Bangladesh from
BMVSS. In 1994, we held a
camp in Khulna and treated and
provided Jaipur Foot to 1000
patients.

Indian designers to give global face to Banarasi weaves

New Delhi: Age-old Banarasi weaves
from Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra
Modi's constituency, are poised for a
facelift, courtesy a string of high-end
Indian designers who are hoping to put
their forces behind improving the livelihood of skilled workers and forging the
global popularity of the fabric as a Make In
India product.
A meeting, led by designer-politician
Shaina NC and FDCI (Fashion Design
Council of India) president Sunil Sethi,
held earlier this week in the presence of
union Minister of State for Textiles
Santosh Gangwar and noted names from
the fashion fraternity, steered efforts
towards revival of handloom from
Varanasi under Modi's Make in India campaign.
Pioneering designer Ritu Kumar said that
"in today's textile world, Banaras handlooms hold a special place" and deserves to
be showcased at international platforms whether this is via ramps or museums.
"They are the only gold and silver patterned fabric reaching out to the Indian
subcontinent in its sari and brocaded pro-

duction. It is one of the textiles which is

India's USPs," Kumar, who felt a dire need
to bring Banarasi weaves into limelight,
told IANS.
"Handlooms are largely used in India on

Most people love being alone: Study

New York: If you
enjoy being all by
yourself, then you are
not alone. Most people love to spend their
time being alone than
being surrounded by
people, new study
says.
The results of a
recent Pew survey
found that 85 percent
of the surveyed people think it is "important" to have alone
time, while 55 percent categorized alone
time as "very important", the Bustle.com
reported.
The research, which focused on how
Americans feel about security and privacy,
also found that 79 percent of respondents
felt it was either "very" or "somewhat"
important that they should not be asked

highly personal questions in social situations or at work.

A 2011 study found
that people, who
spend time alone
have a more "wellfunctioning social
life" than those who
are constantly surrounded by others.
A Harvard study
found that people are
more likely to form far more accurate and
lasting memories when they experience
them alone.
While staying alone, we are not just enjoying the break from others but actually benefiting from it in ways we may not even have
realized. So, if you prefer being alone most
of the time and are yet to venture out and do
things alone -- it is about time you did.

Afternoon protein snacks may help prevent teenage obesity

New York: Are you wondering how to make
your adolescent kid avoid eating unhealthy in
the evening? Researchers have found that
high-protein afternoon snacks, particularly
soy foods, reduce unhealthy evening snacking
in teenagers, thereby preventing obesity.
Soy-protein snacks in the afternoon promote
feelings of fullness and delays subsequent eating, the findings showed.
"Standard meals tend to go to the wayside
for kids this age -- particularly from midafternoon to late evening -- and many of the
convenient 'grab-and-go' snacks are high in
fat and sugar," said lead researcher Heather
Leidy, assistant professor of nutrition and
exercise physiology at the University of
Missouri.
"When kids eat high-protein snacks in the
afternoon, they are less likely to eat unhealthy
snacks later in the day, which is particularly
important for kids who want to prevent

unhealthy weight gain," Leidy explained.

Male and female adolescents between the
ages of 13 and 19 who were classified as
either normal weight or overweight participated in the study. The researchers assessed how
snacking in the afternoon affected teenagers'
appetite, drive to eat and food choices later in
the day and whether these were different
when teens skipped eating snacks altogether.
"In addition to the appetite and satiety benefits, we found that when the teens ate the
high-protein snacks, they incorporated more
protein throughout the day and consumed less
dietary fat," Leidy said.
"In addition, we also found that the highprotein snacks improved certain aspects of
mood and cognitive function," Leidy pointed
out. The afternoon protein snacks used in the
study were soy-protein pudding. Leidy said
similar high-quality protein sources should
elicit similar benefits.

dings, both for grooms and brides. It also

has a significant place in Indian formal
wear. (But) there is definitely a need to
also design the fabrics in a way that they
can fit into the ready to wear segment. But
the absence of Banaras brocades interna-

tionally is due to the fact that they do not

have the correct image or exposure," she
added.
The attempt via the government's effort
is reportedly also to improve the infrastructure for textile work in Varanasi; to provide
support to designers looking to work for
the project; to provide yarn at subsidized
rates; to set up dyeing centers and to facilitate smooth buyer-seller meets to boost the
commercial aspect.
This dream can turn into reality for other
handlooms too if the government and
designers work in tandem, David Abraham
of designer label Abraham & Thakore
pointed out.
"Banaras has a very diverse weaving tradition and has a wide variety of techniques
and structures suitable for many types of
apparel. A successful outcome with
Banaras handweaving will lead the way for
similar action in other handloom centers,"
Abraham told IANS.
However, he stressed that "while global
recognition is important, we need to focus
on the threat that cheap imports and other
machine-made textiles pose in India itself."

Modi's fashion statement

political, financial or territorial
issues that Prime Minister Narendra

China, when he walked out with

world with a new style statement.
Modi, who was on a three-day visit

Harnessing the power of urine

or most of us, urine is a waste product

that we're eager to get rid of, whether
it's our own urine or the urine of our
pets or livestock. We don't want to touch it, we
don't want to process it, and we certainly don't
want to drink it.
But for others, urine is a resource that can be
used to improve our lives. The Rajasthan government is the latest proponent of urine as a
resource. The state's health minister Rajendra
Rathore recently inaugurated a refinery that can
process up to 7,000 litres of cow urine per day.
I'm not sure how many cows it takes to produce
that much urine, but suffice to say that hundreds of cows will be involved, with the most
productive cow likely being honored at the end
of the year with the "Top Urinator Award."
The cow urine will be used to make a variety of products, including a cleaning liquid or
disinfectant that will be marketed under the
trade name of "Gocleaner." (They apparently
didn't like my suggestion: Purine.)
As part of a pilot study, Gocleaner will be
tested in Sawai Man Singh Hospital, the
biggest hospital in Jaipur. It will be used in one
ward and compared with the results in another
ward, where a regular disinfectant is being
used. I'm not sure what the study will show,
but perhaps the patients whose rooms have
been cleaned with Gocleaner will feel healthy

and refreshed. "I absolutely love the smell of

my room!" one of them will say. "Cow urine is
a big improvement over human urine."
Rathore seems pretty excited about the pilot
study. "I will put a team of doctors there to
study for a month and we will then be able to
establish how effective is the cow urine and if
it really works or not," he told NDTV.
If the results are positive, Rathore intends to

make Gocleaner the state's official hospital

cleaning product. And before you know it,
people in Rajasthan and other parts of India
will be washing their hands with Gocleaner,
perhaps even taking baths with it. Watch out,
Lux, here's comes Gocleaner!
That may seem farfetched, but probably not
to all the people who believe in the power of
urine. You can count India's transport minister
Nitin Gadkari among them. He recently
revealed that he collects his urine in a 50-litre
can and uses it to fertilize plants at his Delhi
home. He has found that plants that receive
"urine therapy" grow faster than plants that
receive plain water. Gadkari would like everyone to follow his example, but urine collection
may not be feasible in every household.

However, it may be welcomed by large families that have only one toilet at their disposal.
Instead of lining up outside the toilet in the
morning, each person can head to the nearest
plant.
Children are bound to fight, of course.
Nitin: "It's my turn to fertilize the money
plant."
Raju: "No, it's my turn. Go fertilize the rubber plant."
Mother: "Boys, behave yourselves. You
shouldn't be fighting over whose turn it is to
fertilize the money plant. Besides, it's my turn
today!"
If this catches on, people will have plants
beside their beds, so they don't have to go far
to fertilize in the middle of the night.
But just as the Rajasthan government is
wisely testing the effectiveness of cow urine
before using it widely, Gadkari needs to commission a study to test the effectiveness of
human urine as a plant fertilizer. Here are
some questions I'd like the study to answer:
* Which urine causes plants to grow faster
the transport minister's urine or the agriculture
minister's urine? What about the urine of
Ananth Kumar, India's minister of chemicals
and fertilizers?
* Do politicians have special plant-growing
urine powers or can ordinary people also grow
plants with their urine?
* Is human urine more effective at growing
plants than cow urine? What about dog urine
and cat urine?
* Do the leaves of plants grown with cow
urine have special healing properties? If so,
how soon will they be available in Rajasthan
hospitals?

A Love That Lasts Forever

By Sant Rajinder Singh

Ji Maharaj
basic need for every human
being is to love and be
loved. Psychologists speak
of our human needs as food, clothing, shelter, and safety. They also
add the need for love.
Love is the state when two entities discover each other and find an
affinity of heart and soul. They recognize their essential oneness.
Love is the expression of that
recognition that two are really one.
On this planet, to find love we
often look in the outer worldlove
from our parents, siblings and relatives. As we grow older, we seek
love from our friends. In adulthood
we seek the love of our spouse and
our children. Unfortunately, at
sometime in life, we also learn that
these loves are fleeting.
Relationships change; children
move away; parents die.
Eventually, with each loss, the
loves of this world bring us sorrow.
At some point we turn to God for
relief from the suffering of the loss
of love. When God hears our cry,

God brings us to someone who can

show us that we always have Gods
love. Saints and Masters show us
that Gods love is eternal.
The Masters who have come
through the ages have shown us a
way to find lasting love within.
They teach us meditation on the
inner Light and Sound so we can
experience deeper states of Gods
love for us. Because we cannot see
God with our outer eyes, God communicates instructions to us
through a spiritual Master who
teaches us how to find God with
our inner eye.
Gods love is like sweet mango

arious scriptures from the East tell
us that we are born into this world
with a limited number of breaths.
When our numbered breaths are up, our soul
leaves the body at the time of death. What
we do with those breaths is up to us. We can
consider our number of breaths like capital
or a bank account given to us by God. Every
moment we make a choice about how to
spend our breaths. We can choose to spend
our capital wisely or foolishly.
In this regard, there is a story about a poor
man who was given a sandalwood forest by
a rich man for whom he did a favor. The
poor man did not realize the value of the
sandalwood and began chopping it up for
ordinary lumber to build houses and sell for
firewood. After many years, the rich man
returned to see how the poor man was
doing, expecting that he would now be rich
from the sale of the expensive sandalwood.
He was shocked to find the forest depleted
and the poor man still barely making ends
meet. Not having realized the high value he
could have gotten for the sandalwood, he
had squandered his treasure away. Likewise,
we have been given a sandalwood forest or
the gift of a number of breaths to benefit
ourselves, our family, and all creation.
Let us ask ourselves what we are trading
for each breath. Are we using our breaths for

soul. It is an all-pervading sweetness that permeates ones being. It

is filled with a life force or vibration that uplifts the soul.
We know how some people drink
alcohol to get drunk or take drugs
to become high. They use chemical
means to make themselves feel
intoxicated. Although they are
looking for happiness, they fail to
realize that no matter how inebriated one can become with drugs or
alcohol, that state cannot equal a
fraction of the intoxication one
receives when tasting Gods love
within. Additionally, chemical
intoxication does not last and has
serious side effects for which one

suffers. However, the intoxication

we receive from God is lasting and
has no dangerous side effects.
Whoever tastes of godly love
wants to be in that state again and
again. It uplifts the soul far beyond
this physical world and carries one
through regions of bliss and divine
love.
Our situation is similar to a fish
whose whole existence is living in
the sea. There is nowhere the fish
can survive other than the sea.
Wherever the fish swims, it finds
the sea surrounding it. Whether the
fish swims up or down, left or right,
it finds itself still in the sea.
Likewise, God is an infinite sea

When we choose to
love God instead of
the multiple
temporary loves in
the universe, we
discover a Beloved
who is with us even
beyond the gates
of death.

without any shore. God has no

beginning and no end. Like a fish
within the sea, our soul is always
immersed in God. There is no place
the soul can go where it is not surrounded by God. Whether the soul
is asleep or awake, standing or sitting, going right or left, inhabiting a
physical body in life or a spiritual
body after life, it is always
immersed in God. Just as a fish
cannot live without the sea, the soul
cannot live without God. We can
become aware of our situation and
experience the ocean of Gods love
at all times through meditation.
Once we realize that Gods love
for us is eternal, we begin to understand its uniqueness. Gods love for
us does not wither with time like a
flower, nor does it turn sour or sad
like some worldly relationships.
Gods love withstands all the tests
of time.
When we choose to love God
instead of the multiple temporary
loves in the universe, we discover a
Beloved who is with us even
beyond the gates of death. We will
go with God to Gods true Abode.
There, we will live in eternal wedlock with the true Beloved.

Every Breath is Important

By using our
breaths for
our spiritual
evolution and
to help others
we will make
the world we
live in a
better place..
something that will be truly helpful? To
answer this question we need to define our
purpose and goal in life. Whatever we
decide will lay down the tracks on which the
train of our life will go. Every person has
the ability to choose between going towards
God or away from God. Every person has
the choice of working towards goals of a
worldly nature or those of a spiritual nature.
First of all, let us be grateful and celebrate
that we have been born into this physical
existence as a human being. Recent scientif-

ic studies estimate that there are anywhere

from 7 to 9 million species of life. This
bears out what the ancient Hindus spoke of
when they said that there were 8.4 million
species. This is where the terms being on
the wheel of 84 and the cycle of births and
rebirths come from. Science is now confirming what ancient sages told us thousands of years ago.
Whether the actual number is 7 million,
8.4 million or 9 million, the fact remains
that there are millions of life forms. Being in

the human form is a reason to celebrate and

should not be taken for granted. It is in the
human form that the faculty exists to know
ourselves as soul and to know God. Let us
make the best of this opportunity and not
squander our life away.
Most people devote the entire gift of the
human form to feeding it, reproducing it,
and keeping it alive. However, our lives are
precious. Let us use the spiritual capital of
this birth and our remaining breaths to realize God. If we use our breaths for our own
spiritual development and for the betterment
of the lives of others, we will amass the spiritual rewards of eternal love, bliss and
peace. By using our breaths for our spiritual
evolution and to help others, we will make
the world we live in a better place.
Each day let us take some time to keep our
priorities straight. We can write out our plan
for the day, giving time to our spiritual priorities of meditation, selfless service, and
ethical living.
In this way, the sandalwood forest we
have been given by God can be invested to
bring more good for ourselves and for others. Let us be more aware of how we use
each moment of our lives. In this way our
spiritual success of reuniting our soul with
God can be achieved in the shortest possible
time. The choice is ours.
