Whenreadingabook,howyouinterpretitalldependsonyourpointofview.In
1984therearedifferentwaystointerpretthetext,forexampleifyouareahighschooler
readingitmightinterpretsomethingmuchdifferentthanacollegestudent.Usingmyself
andclassmatesasexamplesofwhatwentthroughahighschooler'smindwhilereading
1984,Iaskedwhatmybrotheracollegestudentthathadtoread1984lastyearfora
englishcoursehisthoughtsaboutthebook.Lookingatsomekeypointsinthebookyou
canseesomecomparisonanddifferencesinwhatahighschoolstudentandacollege
student.
Inthebeginningof1984Winstonsflatisdescribedasrundownlikeeverything
else.Aschapteronecontinuousyoulearnaboutthefourdifferentministries.WhenIfirst
learnedaboutthemandwhatactuallyhappenedinsidethemIwasabitconfusedand
shocked.However,asIcontinuedtoreadIunderstoodthemeaningforthenamesofthe
ministries.Acollegestudentmightbeabletounderstandmoreeasilyandfigureoutwhat
happeningsooner.AnotherthingisthepropagandaposterWarisPeace,Freedomis
Slavery,IgnoranceisStrength.Acollegestudentthathasmoreexperiencewith
governmentcourseswouldseewhatOrwellistryingtosaywiththis,andcompareitto
ourgovernmentinpresenttime.Ahighschoolerreadingmightbecomeconfused,but
sooncometoarealizationhowthetwogovernmentsaresimilar.

IntheBeginningofthebookitissaidthatoneverystreetcornerandeverywhere
youlookyouseeaposterthatreadsBIGBROTHERISWATCHINGYOU.AtfirstI
thoughtitwasallinWinton'shead,thathewascrazy.Thesamethingwhenhedescribed
thetelescreenandhowithadpowers,mostwouldassumethesamething.However,a
collegestudentreadingthebookmightassumehe'stalkingaboutcamerasbeing
everywhere,somehighschoolersmightalsobelievethisaswell.Thisisadystopiasoit
takesplaceinthefuture,itwouldmakesensethattheywouldhavethetechnologytospy
onpeopleeverywhere.ItalsogivesyouareasontobelievemaybeWinstonisnotcrazy.
FinallyWinston'spersonallife,histimewiththeprostituteandhisrelationship
withJulia.WhenIfirstreadabouthistimewiththeprostitute,Ithoughthewaslikeany
othermale,butthenwhenhisrelationshipbegantosparkwithJuliaIunderstoodthe
meaningbehindbothoftheirintentions.Fromacollegestudent'sthoughtstheymightbe
abletowraptheirheadsaroundthefirstmeaningbehindtherelationships.Atfirstthe
incidentwiththeprostituteseemslikeamanbeingnormal.However,afterreadingmore
andunderstandingWinston'srelationshipwithhiswifeaswellIbegantoseewhathe
wasdoing.Thiswashiswayofrebellingalittlebit,thenwhenhebeganarelationship
withJuliaitwasawayforbothofthemtorebelltogether.
IntheconclusionIcometotherealizethatmyolderbrotherrealizesthatthe
governmentof1984isverysimilartothegovernmentinthecountryweliveintoday.I
thoughtaboutthisifyoulookanywherelikestorestherearecameraseverywhere
watchingyoureverymove.WiththePatriotactthatwasinactedthisallowedour
governmenttotapourphonesallinthemotivetostopterrorism,whichisgood.But,if
thinkaboutitweletabitofourprivacygo,whichcoincideswiththephrasefreedomis
slavery.WhichhethoughtthatyouhaveFreedom,butthegovernmentusesthis

imposedbelieftoinspireitscitizenstofightinwarsthatreallydonothavemuchtodo
withtheUS.Thisisexactlythesameasitwasexplainedinthebook1984.
Ineverreallygraspedthisideabeforemybrothertalkedtomeaboutwhathis
thoughtswereabout1984.Iknowthinkbacktothethenatziesinworldwartwoand
gustopoandthesecretpolicethatwentaroundgermanyspyingonpeopletoseeifthey
werecommittingtersion.AlsothesovietsinthecoldwarandtodaywithNorthKorea.
Thesesarealllivingexamplesofthegovernmentin1984.Ifinditsurprisingtofind
todaythattheUnitedStatesgovernmentisclosetobeingthiswayandwasextremely
closeintheheightoftheColdWar,buttodayIrealizethatitisohsoclosetobeinglike
thegovernmentin1984.
IntheendIconcludethatthereismuchmoretothemeaningbehindmanythings
in1984.TherelationshipbetweenWinstonandJuliacanbethoughtofjustarelationship
andamanbeingaman.But,whenyoulookcloseratthetextsurroundingthesituation,it
isobviousthatthereismuchmoretothisrelationship.Itssurprisingwhatyoucanfindin
thetruemeaningofthingswhenyoulookcloserinthecontextofthesituationandsetting
oftheaction.
