Diaspora Support for Rebuilding
North and East of Sri Lanka
On February 6, 2010, non-profit
organisation Association for Relief,
Rehabilitation and Reconstruction
(ARRR) organised a performance by
veena virtuoso Rajesh Vaidhya. That
ARRR managed to sell out the event
was little surprise given Mr. Vaidhya’s
reputation as a supremely talented
artist. His reputation both in India and
internationally guarantee that South
East Asian music connoisseurs flock to
his every performance.
However, this event held a special
significance beyond the quality of the
performer on show. ARRR’s intention
in holding this event was to raise funds
for a hostel in Mannar for children
affected by the war in Sri Lanka, and
also rehabilitation programs for widows.
The event was sold out. While some
people were unable to attend the
event due to prior commitments,
they recognised the efforts of ARRR
members and the vital nature of the
work to be undertaken in Northern Sri
Lanka by purchasing tickets, ensuring
their money goes towards a cause that
is free from political wrangling and in
the sole interest of those innocents who
have been affected by the conflict.
The tireless efforts of Mr. R. Sivanathan
and his team were appreciated by all
who attended on the night, and there
is hope from the diaspora community
that ARRR will continue to deliver both
enjoyable evenings for those away from
Sri Lanka’s shores, and those who
need the Diaspora’s helping hand most
of all.
ARRR’s press release for the event
read as follows:
ARRR’s first fund-raising event ‘Nenjil
Niranthavai’ has been organised to
support the construction of a hostel in
Mannar for war-affected children and
facilitate a rehabilitation and training
program for widows in Batticaloa.
The event is specifically raising money
for 45 children from Sencholai and
Kantharooban Arivuch Cholai, which
were orphanages that have now been
dismantled. Now the children are
under the custody of Mannar St. Xavier
College. The college says that they
find it very difficult to care for these
children due to the limited space they
have. The Mannar Judge has taken
personal risk and responsibility in taking
these children out of detention camps.
The first issue is creating space for
these kids. Due to influx of the IDPs
in Mannar, all lodging is full and the
only way to create space is to build. In
addition, there are several behavioural
and emotional issues that the school’s
management is struggling to handle.
Of note is that the majority of these
children are orphans and many do not
know where they are from.
There is hope that in the long run
the school may be able to locate the
relatives of some of the children. In the
meantime, the college management
would like to have a separate facility for
these children so that they can provide
for them appropriately and allow
for rehabilitation. Mannar St. Xavier
College owns a land near the main
school premises where such a facility
can be built. They request support in
establishing a full residential building
in which the children can be housed
and educated for at least 2-3 years.
They will also require further support
for a two-year period for necessary
items including food, clothing, medicine,
stationary etc. for the children.
ARRR believe that we as diaspora
should take this as our model project
in supporting the war affected children
of Sri Lanka. However this is a major
project and we need a great deal of
help, the tentative budget for the project
is outlined below:
Total building area needed: Approx.
5000 sq. feet.
Cost: 20 million SL Rs. (equivalent
to $200,000 USD), this figure includes
5% standard planning, designing and
consultancy fees.

years, the war in Sri Lanka has made
42,000 women widows in Batticaloa
alone. ARRR members have spoken

Australia Provides
Food Aid to Sri Lanka
Australia will contribute $4 million of
food aid to conflict-affected communi-
ties in Sri Lanka through the World
Food Programme (WFP).
Australia's contribution will provide
almost 5,000 metric tonnes of rice,
pulses, sugar, corn soya blend and
vegetable oil to communities in the
north and east. This includes about
230,000 internally displaced people in
the northern Vanni region of Sri Lanka.
Since September, the WFP has
regularly been delivering food aid by
a special convoy of trucks to internally
displaced people in the Vanni region.
This has been because the Govern-
ment of Sri Lanka directed the United
Nations to withdraw from the area as it
could not guarantee the safety of inter-
national and non-resident staff.
The Australian Government remains
deeply concerned about the ongoing
violence in Sri Lanka and the worsen-
ing humanitarian situation.It is es-
sential that Government agencies and
international organisations continue to
work together to ensure those who flee
the fighting are able to get access to
essential support in a way that pre-
serves their dignity, their family struc-
tures and their human rights.
The Australian Government again calls
on all sides of the conflict to heed inter-
national humanitarian law and allow ci-
vilians, including aid workers, to move
freely in areas under their control.

Fonseka considers
asylum in Australia?
Beaten Sri Lankan presidential
candidate Sarath Fonseka says he could
consider seeking asylum in Australia.
The former army chief lost Tuesday's
presidential election and is coming under
increasing pressure from the Sri Lankan
government.
General Fonseka fears for his safety and
his officials have already approached
several embassies in Colombo about
possible asylum. He says he would also
consider seeking asylum in Australia, but
Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith
says there has been no official request
as yet. "No such approach has been
made," he said.
"I think it is very important that General
Fonseka be provided with two things
- that he be provided with freedom
of movement and he be provided
with security, personal security in the
circumstances that he is in."

on Ganjira supported by a cast of local
talent. Popular percussionist Yogaraja
Kandasamy was the musical director
for the event.
Rajesh Vaidhya and his team played
a number of popular song of their
choosing which was well received.
He invited the audience to suggest
numbers for him to play. There was an
overhelming response to this request
by young and old. He mesmerized
the audience by performing many
popular songs. Vaidhya and his team
brought the best out of each other and
enthralled the audiences.

honoured with “Pon Adai” for their
magnificent performance on the
day. The audience stayed on to talk
with the artists and those who came felt it was a good evening spent with good

Sri Lanka’s information communications
technology industry wants to promote
ICT business and skills in northern Jaffna
to generate employment in the former
war zone, officials said.
The Federation of IT Industry Sri Lanka
(FITIS) said it will hold an exhibition later
this month in the Jaffna peninsula to
create awareness and also hold training
programmes for youth who were former
Tamil Tiger combatants.
The exhibition will also feature an ICT
career guidance program for northern
youth.
Arrangements have also been made to
conduct lectures on ICT use in small and
medium enterprises which are expected
to grow as the region recovers from the
30-year ethnic war which ended last
May.
“FITIS aims to develop ICT and
entrepreneurial skills among northern
youth and promote information
technology ventures in Jaffna,” A

the short term and long term. It is a
win win for ISAF [international secu-
rity assistance force in Afghanistan],

Kanan Bhargawa still shudders at
the memory of March 16, 2008. This
young student from Ambala was
accompanying his friend Jassi that
day to the local railway station of
Sunshine, the city’s relatively poorer
suburb where many Indians stay. They
had gone to pick up Jassi’s wife who
was returning from the city at night.
The moment the duo reached the
station, they were accosted by a group
of boys. One of them, presumably
their leader, demanded a dollar. When
Kanan said he didn’t have one, the
group fell upon him, raining blows and
mouthing racial expletives. Jassi tried
to intervene, only to be beaten up as
well. Their fury vented, the assailants
vanished in a jiffy. Kanan has lost
vision in his right eye. In a quivering
voice, he says, “I was lucky, I wasn’t
knifed.”
“Not only are Indian
students taking away seats
in colleges; by staying

away jobs,” says a right-
wing party leader.
One might think that suburbs such
as Sunshine are prone to random
violence. One may not even slot the
attack on Kanan as completely racial.
But talk to Indians walking around in
Melbourne, and they’ll tell you that the
spectre of racism is stalking them in
every neighbourhood. Take Kamlesh
Patel, a post-graduate in chemical
engineering from the prestigious
Monash University. He stays in
Prahran, a posh neighbourhood, safe
from the baddies of Sunshine. A few
months ago, as Patel was walking his
dog, a carload of youngsters braked
to a halt near him. From inside the
car, one boy shouted, “Hey, you
Indian bastard, why don’t you go back
home?”
There is what can be termed
‘repressed racism’ in Australia,
erupting at the slightest provocation or
under the influence of liquor or often
for no reason other than the sight of an
Indian. Gurdeep Singh’s been driving a
taxi for some years now in Melbourne.
Only last weekend, a drunk Australian
in his car exploded, “F*** off bastard,
go back to your country and work.”
These examples illustrate vividly the
danger Indians in Melbourne face
daily. Does this arise exclusively from
an innate racism? Well, the economic
fear that Indians, arriving in hordes,
will rob them of jobs in the enveloping
gloom of the slowdown ties in with it.
As does the ‘cultural’ factor that the
growing Indian community, largely
drawn from small towns and villages
back home, is perhaps as a group not
sufficiently adjusted to the local culture
and its demands?
Adds another, “The
government should actively
encourage bringing in
Christians and white people
from Zimbabwe and South
Africa.”
It is those in the left-liberal parties
who feel the attacks on Indians, or at
least some of those, have a strong
racial basis. Those in the extreme
right-wing outfits deny this outright.
Among the latter is Jim Salaem, head
of the Australia First Party, which has
adopted the contentious immigration
issue as its principal cause. Salaem
says it isn’t the white Australians who
are attacking Indians. He blames the
violence on those who have migrated
from Muslim countries or Africa. But
he concedes that the government’s
open-door immigration policy has
created enormous problems for
white Australians. “The government’s
education policy of getting students
from India and other countries is
depriving our local boys a chance
to get into universities,” Salaem told
Outlook.
The situation has been compounded, says
the Australia First leader, because the
education policy is closely linked to the
cjak;
immigration policy, which allows a large
number of overseas students, including
those from India, to work in Australia
until they are granted citizenship.
Salaem fulminates, “Not only are these
Indian students taking away the seats
in colleges and universities, they are
also taking away the jobs that could
have gone to an Australian student. In
addition, by staying back and getting a
permanent residency in Australia, they
are becoming a serious threat to white
Australians in the job market.” He
consequently wants overseas students
to return home after they complete
their studies.
Similarly, Bob Vinnicombe of One
Nation, yet another right-wing group,
wants a cap on the number of
immigrants coming to Australia. “The
government should actively encourage
bringing in Christians and white people
from Zimbabwe and South Africa,” he
told Outlook. Neither the Australia First
Party nor One Nation matters much
in Australia’s parliamentary politics.
But Vinnicombe claims that many
politicians in other parties share his
views, though they refrain from going
public for political reasons. His and
Salaem’s views may not be shared by
most Australians, yet the attacks on
Indians have brought the immigration
and race issues to the fore again.
“Most Indian students
perhaps know about our
geography, but know little
about Australian history,”
says a professor of history
in Sydney.
Perhaps their views have also gained
ground because Indians have become
more visible in Australia. The Australian
can’t miss him in his daily routine. He
sees the Indian on the train when he goes
to work; it’s the Indian who serves him
at the takeaway; the Indian is there again
behind the counter when he goes to buy
groceries at the supermarket; he mans
the gas stations, or is behind the wheel
every time the white Australian takes a
taxi at night. As if all this isn’t enough,
he also finds a few of them living in his
posh neighbourhood. Says Gautam Gupta,
spokesperson of the Federation of Indian
Students in Australia (FISA), “Perhaps
somewhere in the Australian mind, the

The furore over racism is also a
case of mismatch in perceptions.
Most attacks are seen back in India
as racial, even though some can be
purely for robbery. In Australia, an
attack is not deemed racial till it can be
established that the intent was such,
and not purely criminal. To understand
why Indians are particularly
susceptible to mugging, one only
has to hear the mean joke doing
the rounds here: “What’s common
between an atm and an Indian? You
get money whenever you hit them.”
It’s true many young Indians flaunt
their iPhones, iPods or carry laptops
around the city. Those looking for
easy money target Indians because
they have things that can be sold
easily. Since most Indian students
share a pad with six or seven others,
they feel it’s safer to carry cash with
them rather than leave it behind. They
are loath to deposit money in a bank
fearing they might be asked whether
they are adhering to laws regulating
the number of hours they can legally
work. No wonder, the authorities here
are advising Indians not to carry their
valuables on them. This has FISA
president Amit Menghani bristle, “How
can you ask them not to carry their
mobile phones? How will they ask for
help if they are attacked?”

“There are only two things
they know about Australia,
that it has kangaroos and
that we play cricket.”
Partly, the violence in Melbourne,
including attacks on Indians, has
increased because the economic
downturn has compelled the Australian
government to downsize its police
force by 2,500 personnel. The state
of Victoria today has a police force
of only 13,000 personnel to man a
population of over four million people.
So, you no longer find a cop patrolling
many a railway station, often the site of
attacks.
Indians are also considered soft
targets because they don’t retaliate.
No one messes around with the
Chinese, for instance, because they
rush out to help their fellow nationals
in distress. The Indian, in contrast, it’s
said, rushes to the media. The Indian
community is also a house divided.
Melbourne has 1,50,000 Indians, but
on the January 26 celebration of the
Australian National Day, they were the
only nationality marching under four
separate banners.
Nor is there unanimity among Indians
whether or not these attacks are racist
in nature. Those who are rich and have
resided here for years vehemently
deny that Australians are racist. Vasan
Srinivasan, president of the Federation
of Indian Association of Victoria, can
be counted as one among them. “I
have been living here for the last 23
years,” he told Outlook. “but have
never experienced any racial slur from
the Australians. I have two young
daughters; if they were racist, do
you think I would have stayed in this
country?” Of course, there is always
the counter-argument: that the rich
can keep away from troubled areas,
not travel in public transport and are
therefore less vulnerable to racial abuse or
attacks.

language in India’s Andaman
Islands has died at the age of about
85, a leading linguist has told the
BBC.
Professor Anvita Abbi said that
the death of Boa Sr was highly
significant because one of the
world’s oldest languages - Bo - had
come to an end.
She said that India had lost an
irreplaceable part of its heritage.
Languages in the Andamans are
thought to originate from Africa.
Some may be 70,000 years old.
The islands are often called an
“anthropologist’s dream” and are
one of the most linguistically diverse
areas of the world.
‘Infectious’
Professor Abbi - who runs the

Andamanese (Voga) website
- explained: “After the death of
her parents, Boa was the last Bo
speaker for 30 to 40 years.
“She was often very lonely and had
to learn an Andamanese version of
Hindi in order to communicate with
people.
“But throughout her life she had a
very good sense of humour and
her smile and full-throated laughter
were infectious.”
She said that Boa Sr’s death was
a loss for intellectuals wanting to
study more about the origins of
ancient languages, because they
had lost “a vital piece of the jigsaw”.

propaganda in Bombay. In this
context, it is heartening to note
that a similar bid by the Hindu
Thamizhar Movement (HTM)
through a PIL was rejected by
the Madras high court last week.
“Any restriction as sought for in
this writ petition will run counter
to the spirit of the Constitution
and the common citizenship that
the citizens of this nation enjoy,”
said Chief Justice H L Gokhale
and Justice K K Sasidharan of
the high court to HTM president
V Vaithiyalingam.
According to him, the very exist-
ence of Tamil language and
culture was at peril because it
was not compulsorily taught in
schools and commercial estab-
lishments showed no respect
for the language. Besides, the
population of non-Tamils set-
tled in the state had gone up to
about 25 per cent of the popula-
tion now, he claimed. Therefore,
the people of Tamil Nadu had a
right to know the exact popula-
tion of non-Tamils in the state,
he argued. The judges pointed
out that during every census,
documents seeking to know the
language and religion of peo-
ple are attached with the form.

in peril in Tamil Nadu. Yes,

ago, Hindi is not such an alien
language and it’s not unusual to
hear it in shops, cinema thea-
tres, even on the streets. And
many “outsiders” including from
North India have come and set-
tled here. But that has to do with
how peaceful the state is – no
terrorist attacks since the one
meant for BJP leader L K Advani
in Coimbatore in 1998, an indus-
trial climate that beckons inves-
tors – deputy CM M K Stalin
told the recent CII partnership
summit that TN ranked first in
the country in wooing $ 8-9 bil-
lion worth of FDI of which 1,250
projects valued at Rs six lakh
crores alone came since his
party (the DMK) came to power
in 2006. Here are more impres-
sive numbers: TN has over 90
special economic zones and
about 21,260 factories while its
gross industrial output is about
1,90,000 crore.
Vaithiyalingam also should be
reminded that the man who has
made a career out of protecting
Tamils, Karunanidhi, is the CM.
In fact, he is going to preside
over the World Classical Tamil
conference in June in Coim-
batore just to prove that Tamil
is robust and that in word and
deed – he recently changed the
name of a groom from Pradeep
because it was not a Tamil
name – his agenda is protection
of Tamils, their language and
culture . So what is HTM wor-
ried about?
Water wars
During the cold war, it was said
that if the USSR caught a cold,
East Europe caught a chill.
But that is 20 years ago and
the Russian is more capital-
ist than the average Joe today.
For instance, the number of
thousands of Russian tourists
wanting to bask and sunbathe
on the beach easily surpassed
the number of charters bringing
in English tourists to Goa during
the current tourist season.
But coming back to the point,
the Telangana tangle in Andhra
Pradesh, which is still playing
out two months after K Chan-
drasekhar Rao of the Telangana
Rashtra Samithi went on a fast
that saw the centre capitulating,
created a water problem for TN.
Under the Telugu Ganga project
deal, the supply from Krishna
began in September 2008 and
lasted till April 1, 2009. It re-
sumed on September 18 and
continued till December 12. The
total received was 4,000 mcft.
At the peak of the Telangana
movement, waters from the
river Krishna to Chennai was
stopped and the storage levels
fell in the four reservoirs that the
river feeds. As of last Friday, the
combined water levels in the
four reservoirs was 6,866 million
cubic feet (mcft). In Poondi, the
level was 1,572 mcft against a
capacity of 3,231 mcft. In Chem-
barambakkam it was 2289 mcft
against the capacity of 3645
mcft, in Red Hills it was 2,318
mcft against the capacity of
3,300 mcft while in Cholavaram
it was 687 mcft against the ca-
pacity of 881 mcft.
In December 2009, the com-
bined level had gone up to
7,545 mcft from 6,040 mcft in
November that year. “That was
because there were rains in
November besides there was
also Krishna water supply. But
on December 12, Krishna water
stopped because of the Telan-
gana agitation and so did the
rains. Hence the levels have
gone down,” said an official
of the Chennai Metro Water
Supply and Sewerage Board
(CMWSSB).
But last Saturday with the situ-
ation in AP getting less volatile,
the flow of water was resumed.
The CMWSSB got about 400
cusecs of water which was
reflected in the storage levels in
the reservoirs going up by Mon-
day, nearly 72 hours after water
was released to make its jour-
ney to the reservoirs. The water
flow is expected to continue till
April.

When you switch parties, you
not only switch allegiances to
a new leader, you also switch

hakrishan, the newly minted
DMK MLA from Tiruchendur did.

his annual kabaddi tournament

hakrishnan, himself a kabaddi

held the tournament on Febru-
ary 17, AIADMK chief J Jayala-
litha’s birthday. Radhakrishnan
had slithered up the ranks fast
and was even the AIADMK’s
Thoothukudu district secretary
and was made a minister within
three years of joining the AI-
ADMK.
But this year, 94 teams from
across Thoothukudi district
played for the M K Azhagiri cup
at Tiruchendur. He may have
switched parties but certainly
has not changed his tactics to
please the leader or for that
matter, his constituents. A local
AIADMK leader griped that Rad-
hakrishan was more focused on
promoting his politics than the
sport. But clearly that’s a case of
sour grapes because the youth
in Thoothkudi are very gung ho
about Radhakrishnan because
he not only promotes kabaddi
but even distributed cricket kits
to the youth in his capacity as
president of the Thoothukudi
district amateur cricket associa-
tion.

Tamils and Sri Lanka:
A wake-up call

The results of the recent presidential
elections are being analyzed and
interpreted in clinical detail by many
commentators from their respective
vantage points, experiences and
predilections.
While in Sri Lanka in December’2009, I
had the opportunity to spend a few days
in Jaffna. Based on the interactions I
had with the Sinhala people belonging
to different strata of society, I formed
the impression that Mahinda Rajapakse
would win this election. It was obvious
that although most Tamils in Colombo
and its environs, and the Sinhala middle
and upper classes were taking a pro-
Fonseka stance, the majority of the
ordinary Sinhala people were clear they
would vote for Mahinda Rajapakse.
Their deliverance from the LTTE blight
played a major role in their preference.
This segment of the Sinhala population
also wanted the problems facing the
Tamils addressed. They were also
quite clear that Mahinda Rajapakse
was the driving force behind the defeat
of the LTTE, although appreciative of
the role played by Sarath Fonseka. It
would be wrong to conclude from the
election results that Sinhala chauvinism/
triumphalism was the driving force
behind the Rajapakse win, from the
impressions I formed.
It was the ordinary Sinhala and Tamil
people who had paid the price in blood
and misery, during the prolonged conflict
and the intermittent wars. The relief that
the war had finally ended and the LTTE
decimated was most felt by the ordinary
Sinhala people, who bore the brunt
of LTTE terror and soldier casualties.
Their relief and gratitude to Mahinda
Rajapakse should be understood in
this context. They were reacting as
absolutely normal human beings relieved
that three decades of terror and war had
ended, and not as triumphalist Sinhalese.
To name this response ‘triumphalism’
is to insult their genuine decency.
Communalism and racism (If at all there
is racial divide in Sri Lanka!) are the main
preserve of the middle and upper classes
among both the Sinhalese and Tamils.
Ordinary Sinhalese were very clear in
accepting that the Tamils had suffered,
the Tamils had grievances and the
problems of the Tamils should be
addressed within the context of a united
Sri Lanka. They were also proud of the
manner in which Mahinda Rajapakse
had stood his ground among manifold
pressures during the war. Mahinda
Rajapakse had definitely sparked a
sense of national pride in these simple
people. Whilst they may not be aware
of the intricacies of the devolution
debate, they were quite clear that any
solution should not lead to the break-up
of Sri Lanka. They considered Mahinda
Rajapakse the most likely to deliver on
this score and their other day- to- day
concerns that are quite different from
those of the upper and middle classes.
The end of war and the decimation of the
LTTE have yet not ended the problems
of the Tamils on many fronts. Life is yet
full of misery and many issues of major
concern for the Tamils are at a low
point. The Tamils are mostly a confused
people bereft of a leadership to lead
them towards a new vision. The voting
patterns of the Tamils in the north and
east, Colombo and the rest of the island
should be viewed in this context.
The impression I have is that many are
yet sore that the LTTE was defeated
before the problems of the Tamils were
resolved. Many Tamils, including those
who were opposed to the LTTE, had
considered the LTTE a bulwark against
Sinhala extremism. Further, the dream of
‘Eelam’ had been so deeply embedded in
the psyche of Tamils by the Tamil political
parties and the LTTE over several
decades, that the defeat of the LTTE had
led to a sense of political paralysis and
repressed frustration. The light that was

promised at the end of a very dark tunnel
never materialized. The Tamils yet feel
they are yet in a dark tunnel haunted
by many ghosts- some real, others
imagined. The induction of the yet-
armed Tamil paramilitary groups by the
government to fill the leadership vacuum
among the Tamils, has further added to
Tamil fears, frustration and anger.
The TNA tried to win back its long
lost leadership role, by exploiting this
anger and frustration to support Sarath
Fonseka. The TNA has largely lost its
place in Tamil politics, which would be
difficult to reclaim. The situation of the
IDPs and the unsatisfactory manner in
which they have been resettled, have
added fuel to fire in the Tamil mind. Most
Tamils, who refrained from voting, were
in no mood for elections at this point in
time and had concerns that involved
their very survival as human beings. The
Tamil votes cast in the north and east for
Sarath Fonseka should be considered
a protest vote against their present
circumstances.
It is time for the Tamils to claw their way
out of their ‘victim’ mindset. There is
future to think of, plan for and live for.
Tamils have to take advantage of the
good will currently prevailing among
most Sinhala people, to resolve their
outstanding problems within the context
of a united Sri Lanka. Tamils have to join
the national mainstream. Tamils should
seek a new leadership that is attuned to
their current needs and is qualitatively
better than what they have now. The
TNA and the so-called democratic
‘paramilitary ‘ groups should be rejected.
It would be better for the Tamils to
vote for Tamil or Muslim candidates
representing the national parties in the
north and east in the forthcoming general
and provincial council elections, than
vote the TNA or the paramilitary groups
masquerading as newborn democrats.
This is a historical moment for the Tamils
to clean their Augean stables.

The Sinhala polity and the government
on the other hand have to trust the
decency, good sense and intelligence of
the Tamils, sympathize with their current
plight and take them into confidence. The
paramilitary forces should be disbanded
and disarmed as an issue of utmost
priority. Their leaders should seek public
support on their own without arms and
government patronage. Any gratitude
owing to these individuals for their role in
winning the war should not be paid at the
expense of the Tamils. The TNA should
be left to fend for itself and not permitted
to become part of any alliance with
national political parties.
The national political parties should
select and field Tamil and Muslim
candidates who are above board and are
capable of providing a forward- looking
leadership to the Tamils and Muslims,
at the general elections in the north and
east and the provincial council elections
in the north. The national political parties
should reach out to the Tamils in an
honourable manner at the forthcoming
elections and win their hearts and minds
with programs geared to the welfare
of these unfortunate people, who have
been through hell.
The government should resettle the IDPs
in an open and inclusive manner, as
per the original plans it had formulated
and presented to many. The ‘IDP’
resettlement program should preferably
be on the lines of the ‘Marshall Plan’
for West Germany after the Second
World War, if the required funding
could be obtained. The captured and
surrendered cadres should be quickly
re-integrated and made productive
members of society. They should be one
major component of the resettlement
program. The north and east require
a special and concerted effort on the
part of the government for upliftment
on many fronts- poverty alleviation;
health care; programs for the long term
care of widows, orphans, injured and
the maimed; education; agricultural
development; social development;
tourism development and industrial
development. To these are tied issues
of land distribution and ownership,
which are the breeding ground for much
dissatisfaction and rancour. Further, the
need to preserve the cultural identity
of the Tamils in the north and east
while integrating these provinces into
the national mainstream, are daunting
tasks that have to be approached
with sensitivity and honesty and in a
transparent manner.
The peoples of Sri Lanka- Sinhalese,
Tamils and Muslims should not missed
the historical congruence of many
factors that have come about to heal our
national wounds, reconcile and forgive
the past to build a new and bright future
for all citizens. I hope President Mahinda
Rajapakse will do what needs to be done
to achieve this.

Temple

The fourth and the present Temple was constructed in 1749 A.D. during
the benign Dutch colonial era by one Krishna Suba Iyer and Ragunatha
Maapaana Mudaliyar in the 'Kurukkal Valavu', which is the original temple
premises.

Initially the Temple was built using bricks and stones, and had a cadjaned
roof. The original shrine had only two main halls and didn't have any clock
tower, or any surrounding courtyard and an enclosing wall, or any ornately
carved towers or gopuram.

The first clock tower was erected in 1899, and the main hall where the vel
or lance of the deity resides was re-furbished using rocks in 1902. The
first enclosing wall was erected in 1909. Likewise, the temple has been
gradually renovated from time to time with contributions from the general
public. In 1964, the 'Vasantha Mandapam' or grand hall was renovated to
have the present grand look and feel.

The temple has the main entrance facing the east. It has an ornately
carved five-storied tower or gopuram in the Dravidian architecture style at
the main entrance.

In the surrounding inner-yard, It has shrines for Lords Ganesh, Vairavar,

Sun and Sandana Gopala. In the southern part of this Temple, the holy
pond and Thandayudhapaani shrine dedicated to another aspect of Lord
Muruga can be seen. In the northern side big holy garden is located.
