DADS ANShapter 2: Eighth-Note Triplets
Triplets are produced when a note is divided into three equal parts. Therefore, a triplet occupies the same
thythmic space normally occupied by two notes of equal value. Triplets can be applied to any rhythn
value, but the most common usage of triplets is with eighth notes. In addition, the eighth-note triplet is the
rhythmic basis for swing and shuffle feels.
Triplets: In Detail
Since two eighth notes are equal to (and most likely to subdivide) a quarter note, a number three 3) is now
placed above the beam alongside an additional eighth note. Not only does this illustrate that triplets are in
Use, but it also indicates that the performer should now play three notes in the space of one beat:

Two eighth notes Three eighth-note triplets
Thus, there are twelve eighth-note triplets in one measure of 4/4. For example:
Ex. 83
Furthermore, a triplet is not simply a grouping of three notes. With this in mind, lets take a look at an eighth
note pattern in a sequence of three pitches
Fx 84
SSE
As the eighth notes in Ex. 74 (above) are still moving by at the same eighth note rate (ie: 1 Bede
this is not considered a triplet. For this musical idea to be played as eighth-note triplets it would be notated
formed) as follows:

To further elucidate this concept, performing eighth notes is accomplished by evenly dividing each beatinto
two equal parts and its resulting syllable count is "1~8-2-8'| lowever, (when playing eighth-note triplets),
‘each beats subdivided into three equal parts, and the resulting syllable count is"I-trip-et, 2-trip-et, 3-trip-
let, 4-trip-let!There are many accepted ways to properly count triplets, but for developmental purposes the
aforementioned method works best. When referencing a specific partial of a triplet you can say “the fist
partial, the second partial or ‘the third partial" (ofthe triplet) as displayed below:

Rests
Just as with our former eighth-note subdivision, rests can also be utlized within triplet subdivisions. To keep
the notation clear, a bracket is used (in addition to the number three) to house the various combinations:
