2009 Agency Report

We are pleased to provide you with our 2009 Annual Report.
Your continued interest and support are greatly appreciated.
One word comes to mind when recapping the past year—
strength. The board, the staff, the volunteers, the programs,
the services, and the finances are strong. The 15 member
board is deeply committed to its job of policy development,
fiscal responsibility and general oversight. Their vision and
involvement with the agency gives support to keep it strong
and growing. The dedicated and caring staff are the
foundation that value helping individuals in our county. They
are the strong backbone which implements the programs and
services that are needed and wanted. The volunteers are the
unpaid staff who provide the assistance that is so necessary in
going above and beyond to meet the needs of clients. The
programs and services continue to be vital and continue to
grow in numbers as well as scope. This year the agency added
a Caregiver program which includes two components—a
support group and a Respite program. Through strong
financial support BCSSI is able to exceed program goals. The
agency is blessed, thanks to the entire team.
The entire building including the community room was busy
with activity due to increased offerings of workshops, classes
and events. Working in
collaboration with Witham Family
YMCA, Boone County Learning
Network, Boone County Bar
Association, Indiana Senior Health
Insurance Program (SHIP), senior
living facilities and many
Euchre and Bridge are played volunteers, BCSSI expanded
weekly in the community room. offerings available to older adults.

With their financial assistance BCSSI is able to provide

the City of Lebanon and the Jefferson Township Trustee for
their donations.
BCSSI has been faithful to what we have been and will be
faithful to what we will be. As we seek to grow and vision the
future we will keep our mission at the forefront.

The measure of life is not its duration, but its donation.

—Peter Marshall

As a volunteer summer intern,

Haley Matherly, spent time
each week to help organize
various activities including the
United Way Day of Caring.
Haley also led a jewelry making
workshop.
The United Way Day of Caring encourages individuals to
volunteer their time to help others in the community. During
2009, employees from
Hachette, Gander Mountain
and Case New Holland worked
with BCSSI to complete many
tasks for the agency and its
clients. Some of the jobs
included painting, washing
windows, and yard work.
Volunteers are a special
resource for BCSSI.
Throughout the year they give
of their time, energy and talent to help the agency fulfill its
mission. During 2009 they provided over 3,900 hours to help
older adults. A few of the life
sustaining and enriching
activities included legal, tax,
insurance and Medicare
assistance, as well as exercise
classes, lunch ‘n learn groups,
art classes led by John Hanks (at
left), computer instruction, and

and making gingerbread houses.

Volunteers are a vital part of every
program offered. Many older adults in
Boone County receive blessings
throughout the year from volunteers.
They truly make a difference. No
matter how large or small, each
contribution provides a ripple effect
and spreads kindness throughout the
world.
Thanks to all volunteers for your commitment of time, energy
and talent to help the agency fulfill its mission.
Fund raisers are not so much about raising money as they are
about changing lives.
During 2009, BCSSI was able to acquire resources through
various fundraisers directed by the Board members. Many
volunteer hours were contributed in making these projects
successful. A Smelt Fry was once again held in Thorntown at
Stookey’s Restaurant with expert
help from Jon Stookey. The 2nd
Annual Senior Health & Wellness
EXPO provided health screening,
flu shots and information to
older adults, their families and
caregivers. The agency
continues to recycle paper and
magazines, ink jet, laser
cartridges, cell phones, and old
digital cameras.

cause you stop laughing. —Michael Pritchard

She was very appreciative of

Building support for the

elderly in Boone County

Boone County Senior Services Foundation, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3)

organization which was established to build a permanent
endowment from gifts and bequests so that BCSSI can continue
serving the older adults in our community. Current BCSSI revenue
sources will not grow enough in the coming years to sustain the
current level of services. This loss threatens to deprive many
seniors of the support they need. BCSS Foundation, Inc. is
determined that this growing number of seniors will have the
support and services it needs.
In April, the Foundation hosted the 2nd Annual Legacy Dinner to
raise funds for the Endowment. Over 50 individuals attended and
were treated to a delicious dinner served by Country Garden
Catering. Guests were entertained during the evening with music
provided by Mary Bonner, Joyce Runyan & LeeAnn Biggs.
