3S Shawl

by Amy A. Meade

3S stands for Super-Wide, Super Simple!

This wide, shallow, garter-stitch triangle shawl works with any fingering weight
yarn. Increases in each row form a shallow triangle with long, tapering ends. An
option for eyelet rows and several decorative bind-off options help break up the
garter monotony. A great tweener or traveling project!

Materials:

1 skein fingering weight yarn (350-450 yards)

Tools:

US Size 2, 24 cable knitting needles (if you are a

tight knitter, you may want to use Size 3 needles)

US Hook Size E crochet hook (for optional

crocheted bind-off)

Notions:

2 stitch markers
Darning or yarn needle for weaving in ends

Directions
Cast on 3 stitches.
Knit Setup Rows 1-2 as follows:
Setup Row 1 (RS): KFB in the first stitch. YO, place marker. Knit next stitch (this
becomes the center stitch). Place marker, YO. KFB last stitch. You have increased
4 stitches on the right-side row (for a total of 7 stitches).
Setup Row 2 (WS): KFB first stitch, knit to marker, slip marker, knit center
stitch, slip marker, knit to last stitch, KFB last stitch. You have increased 2 stitches
on the wrong-side row (for a total of 9 stitches).
Now start knitting regular pattern Rows 1-2, as follows:
Row 1 (RS): KFB first stitch, knit to marker, YO, SM, knit center stitch, SM, YO, knit to last stitch, KFB last stitch.
Row 2 (WS): KFB first stitch, knit to marker, SM, knit center stitch, SM, knit to last stitch, KFB last stitch.
Continue knitting Rows 1-2, slipping markers as you come to them, until you have around 200 stitches on each side of the marked center stitch (or as close as
you can come to 200 stitches, leaving enough yarn to bind off). End with Row2. Do not cut yarn.

Eyelet Rows
For added interest, you can randomly knit an Eyelet Row instead of regular Row 1 as follows:
Eyelet Row 1 (RS): KFB in the first stitch. *K2tog, YO*, repeat from *.* to marker, SM, knit center stitch, SM, *YO, K2tog*, repeat from *.* to last stitch, KFB last
stitch. You may need to fudge a stitch as you approach the first marker, and as you approach the last stitch of the row. Just make sure there is a YO on either side of
the center stitch. Dont worry too much about it itll look fine!
Eyelet Row 2 (WS): Same as regular pattern Row 2.

Bind-Off Options
Bind off using your favorite method, or use one of the following decorative bind-offs.

Picot Bind-Off
If youve never performed a picot bind-off, they can be a bit strange at first. Knitty has a nice bind-off tutorial, which includes the picot bind-off:
http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall06/FEATfall06TT.html.
Cast 2 stitches on to end of left needle (I prefer to use the Cable Cast-On method: http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/cast-on).
Bind off 5 stitches. A small picot is formed.

Transfer stitch on right needle back to the left needle.
Continue making picots in the same manner:
Cast 2 stitches on to left needle.
Bind off 5 stitches. Transfer stitch on right needle back to left needle.
Continue casting on 2 stitches/binding off 5 stitches until all stitches are consumed.

Crochet Cast-Off
If youve never crocheted before, there are good instructions all over the Internet. You might try
http://crochet.about.com/od/learntocrochet/tp/crochet-for-beginners.htm.
Insert crochet hook into last stitch on the knitting needle. Lift stitch off needle onto crochet hook, and
chain 5.
*Insert crochet hook into first 3 stitches on the left knitting needle. Lift the 3 stitches off needle onto
crochet hook (4 stitches on hook). Make a single crochet (SC) as follows: Yarn over, draw yarn through
3 stitches (2 stitches left on hook). Yarn over, and draw yarn through the remaining 2 stitches (SC
completed).
Chain 5.*
Repeat from * to * until all stitches are consumed. Crochet a slip-stitch to anchor the last open stitch
to the tip of the shawl body as follows: Insert crochet hook through a knit stitch at the very tip of the
shawl. Draw up a loop (2 stitches on hook). Pull this loop through last loop of the chain 5. Cut yarn.
Draw cut yarn end through loop and tighten.

Finishing
Weave in ends. Soak in warm water for 10 minutes. Gently squeeze out excess water. Roll in a towel
and squeeze out remaining excess water. Lay on a flat surface and gently pull/pat into shape. Let dry
thoroughly. Enjoy!
