REPORTED SPEECH
REPORTED STATEMENTS:
1. Statements in reported speech can be introduced by a verb in the present
tense. In this case the verb tense does not change.
He says: Im trying to get a taxi
He says that he is trying to
get a taxi
2. But indirect speech is usually introduced by a verb in the past tense (said,
told) In this case the verbs in the direct speech have to be changed into a
corresponding past tense.
Im going out, he said
He said he was going out
Im going out, he told
He told me he was going out
Say +(to + object) + that clause
Tell + object + that clause
3. Subject: When the subject is first person singular or plural we change it to
third person singular or plural:

If we change the subject pronoun we should change the rest of the pronouns
in the sentence if necessary:

REPORTED QUESTIONS:
1. They are introduced by the following verbs: ask, inquire, want to know,
wonder.
2. When you are reporting a questions you arent asking anything, just
transmitting information, so you have to take this into account, because the
order of the sentence changes:
There are two different types of questions:
a) WH- questions:
They are introduced by a question word: what, where, when..
WH- + AUX+ Subject+ verb+ .? --- (He asked) WH + subject +
verb
