1. Chick-lit as genre fiction

Chick-Lit is a genre fiction which containes issues of a modern womenhood. It


often features a female protagonist whose life adventures are thematized in the book.
"Chick" is American slang for a young woman, and "lit" is a shortened form of literature.
This type of literature is known as low-grade literature beside of that it's very popular
and is placed in bestsellers list. The chick-lit is genre comprised of books that are mainly
written by women for women. The books range from having main characters in their early
20s to their late 60s. There is usually a personal, light, and humorous tone to the books.
Sometimes they are written in first-person narrative; other time they are written from
multiple viewpoints. The book usually consist of women experiencing usual life issues,
such as love ,marriage, dating, relationships, friendships, roommates, weight issues,
addiction, and much more. The genre became popular in the late 1990s. In the past,
certain publications and authors were 'trashing' chick-lit as a genre. But nowadays it's
consider as well-established genre with bestsellers list. The genre of Chick-Lit is also
represents resources of beauty myth and feminism,also themes helping women to deal
with issues and challenges they meet everyday. This genre also experienced growing
popularity in the past ten years. Marketed as a for women, by women, about women
genre, the chickerati (authors of chick lit) have benefited financially and professionally by
writing about the feelings of women in a drawing-room, and the everywomantypeheroine'. The phrase Chick-Lit was ironically used as the title for postfeminst title of :
courageous, wry, honest, intelligent, libidinous and unapologetic texts. In order to
recognise a Chick-Lit in the book, the following criteria must be included:
A young female protagonist (mid-20s through early 30s)
A posh urban setting(Manhattan,New York and London)
An occupation based on : publishing,journalism,fashion
Problems in workplace
Certain romntic problems,and remains single until the ending
Compulsive behaviour : spending money,strict dieting
Overprotective mothers.
