Unique-pavilion-shape-with-mathematical-relationships

This is the new design of pavilion that has classic color and unusual shape. With the
mathematical system, this design of pavilion performs different nuance. The shape is formed by
the simple pieces that are put together. The team conducted digital survey and uses the
relationships mathematical system to put the pieces together. In this process the designers get the
new lesson to make a new creation.
The design of pavilion is made for an exhibition of design (SPOGA in Cologne, Germany). This
is the result of the collaboration with Design Programme of Architectural Association and
Emergent Technologies.

Innovative Recycled Cardboard Tubes Pavilion by UNSWs

Students

A group of architecture students from the University of New South Wales constructed a
temporary pavilion out of recycled cardboard tubes in front of the Sydney Customs House. The
pavilion was one of several temporary structures constructed by architecture student groups from
Australian universities as part of the CH4 Student Design Competition during the Sydney
Architecture Festival. UNSWs Built Environment team was given 2,000 tubes from a company
that manufacturers carpet. The goal for the competition was to make use of recycled materials
and educate festival visitors on sustainability.
UNSWs designed the prefabricated and preassembled the temporary pavilion at the Tramsheds
on UNSWs Randwick campus. They used plywood sheets and cut holes in the wood to create
structural forms, which the cardboard tubes would slide into. The entire pavilion sits on a small
foundation of wood slats that curve in half circles to create the pavilion. After preassembling the
pavilion in the university buildings, the students took apart the structure and rebuilt it in one day
on the forecourt of the Customs House in Sydney.
All of the teams for the CH4 competition worked with recycled and reused materials, like
compressed aluminum cans, giant folding fabric pleats and a grid of large moving puzzle blocks.
The exhibition lasted from October 20th to the 31st and was juried by a panel of Sydney
architecture professionals. After the competition, the UNSW Built Environment students hoped
to send the cardboard tubes back to the manufacturer for reuse or at minimum, the tubes would
be recycled into paper. [via] [source]

Designed by architects Vaillo + Irigaray, the MS Lounge is a pavilion that located in Navarra,
Spain which gets its distinctive look from the airy facade of green reeds surrounding it. With the
funky structure, it serves as a pop up event space that allows guests to feel like they are dining
and dancing within a bamboo forest.
On the inside, the space is airy and filled with daylight streaming from a strategically placed
skylight. The cement floor and thin, metal poles that hold up the roof give the interior a
monochromatic, industrial look that is complemented by the poppy green of the reeds outside. In
the center of the room, a chunk of the floor has been covered with what appears to be a carpet of
crushed green wine bottles.

Temporary Porte Cochre Spiraling Prefab Pavilion for the UN

Campus

porte-cochre-with-metal-frame

Recently FTL Design Engineering has finished their prefab pavilion for the UN campus in NYC.
Its called, sits adjacent to the UNs new temporary General Assembly building, and serves as a
pop-up entrance pavilion and security screen for the general assembly delegates. The Porte
Cochres main function is to serve as an entrance pavilion while several historic UN buildings
are being renovated.
FTL designed the interim canopy with sustainability in mind and minimized the amount of
materials used to build it, making for a lightweight structure that can be relocated and reused
time and again on different parts of the campus. Nested within the surrounding landscape, the
canopys helical arches undulate and twist, creating an artistic entrance to greet international
delegates.
In order to reduce the pavilions environmental impact, FTL explored lightness as a visual,
physical and sustainable approach, using a minimum of materials. The structure uses two fabrics:
a Teflon coated glass fabric and a silicone coated glass fabric for greater translucency in the
arches. In order to provide ventilation to disperse fumes from idling cars unloading delegates, the
pavilion also had open facades and linear vents that run the entire length of the trusses, letting
fresh air flow freely throughout the enclosure.

New Dutch Pavilion with Solar Power

dutch-pavilion-spiral-construction

Dutch firm Paul de Ruiter Architects have releashed a novel student pavilion for the Netherlands
Erasmus University that aims to go zero energy while creating a comfortable, light filled hub for
the campus. The design features a hybrid roof system that captures daylight and solar energy
with an array of light harvesting tubes. Passive cooling and state of the art heating systems
increase energy savings even further.
The clean look of a circle in a box aesthetic keeps the building light and open, creating an
inviting atmosphere for students to meet and study in. The architects explain that the unique roof
system uses an intelligent solar system which directs daylight into the interior while reducing
solar heat gain and producing clean energy. Thats a pretty neat trick if they can pull it off.
The open interior makes full use of that daylight with a central interior atrium that offers plenty
of places to crash. A theater, caf, and work centers are tucked along the sides and on a second
floor. The entire ground level is flanked with a full story glass faade that makes the building
transparent. The pavilion is heated and cooled with a ground source heat pump coupled with a
radiant tube concrete core that cuts energy consumption. Add natural cooling, night flushing, and
copious daylighting and the student pavilion may very well ace the zero energy test.

Designed by ETH Zurich students Min-Chieh Chen, Dominik Zausinger and Michele Leidi, the
semi spherical pavilion is made from 409 circular cardboard pieces connected together with ties.
The project was digitally designed using CAAD software, which opens up exciting new
possibilities for structures made from biodegradable paper pulp.
The Packed Pavilion was unveiled as part of the 3D paperArt exhibition at the Shanghai Museum
of Arts and Crafts during the 2010 Shanghai Expo. Each of the pavilions circular components is
formed from 28 layers of cardboard that were cut and composed into building elements by a
computer controlled machine. The project was also designed to be efficiently manufactured and
shipped by nesting individual pieces within one another, saving on production time, material use,
and shipping volume.

Modern Biophilic Sunroom Heats from 19th Century Pittsburgh

House
January 15, 2011 by admin Leave a Comment

biophilic-sunroom-heats-interior-view

Designed by studio dARC, this nifty greenhouse and sun room sits atop a 19th century row
house in the South Side Flats of Downtown Pittsburgh. The design has lost no punch as it
contrasts with the dark factory brick homes of a century ago. Using passive heating the project
also helps warm the lower flats like the original design, but with new efficient equipment that
also pumps fresh air into the building. Tenants are given much-needed space to garden and can
hang out on the sun deck while taking in the city views and sun rays.
The Architects like the design to those Russian Matryoshka dolls that nestle into each other, an
inner structural frame is skinned by an outer frame of glazing and stainless steel, but perhaps a
more apt description may be of toppled dominos facing the sun. The tilted roof is a frame for
three large south-facing windows which collect a remarkable amount of usable sunlight. A
biophilic garden with hydroponic and soil planting systems offers produce and flowers for the
tenets.
Access heat is used to temper fresh air with an Energy Recovery Ventilator or ERV. The ERV
exchanges 90% of the heat from the green homes air to the houses fresh air supply. The warm
filtered air is them pumped into the apartments below. By adding a slight pressurization to the

building, air infiltration is virtually eliminated improving comfort and efficiency. On more
temperate days fresh air is brought in through an urban snorkel that penetrates the center of the
roof. A solar hot water system is planned as well. Low impact material like Trex decking and
other high recycled content materials were used throughout the project.
