CHENNAI: Bhoologapandian, the loan shark arrested on July 22 based on the complaint of a city-based
builder, managed to flourish in the city thanks to the blessings of senior police officers, including two
assistant commissioners and a woman police inspector, investigators have found.
He had been arrested in 2001 for abetting the suicide of three members of a family in Sankar Nagar near
Tambaram in 2011 but came out on bail. The Anna Nagar resident became close to a few politicians in the
area, most of them natives of Tirunelveli and Tuticorin, and ran his business unhindered.
Finally, the special cell formed to deal with loan sharks swung into action and arrested Bhoologapandian
after Kasi Viswanathan, a builder, complained that he had borrowed 58 lakh from him and was being
harassed for more despite coughing up 1.08 crore, including the interest. He said Bhoologapandian was
refusing to return the documents for a property worth crores of rupees until he paid another 58 lakh.
A few documents and some CDs were seized from his office and residence. Police now plan to detain him
under the stringent Goondas Act that will ensure he remains in prison for at least one year.
Following the revelations made by the loan shark, police commissioner S George personally questioned
the two assistant commissioners of police and the women inspector who helped Bhoologapandian evade
apprehension in several incidents. The officers denied having helped the loan shark but were allegedly
cowed down when presented with evidence: Some tape recordings made by complainant Viswanathan of
his conversation with Bhoologapandian in which he mentioned the officers' names.
The woman inspector, who had been posted at the commissioner's office, is said to have helped bail out
the loan shark after he was arrested three years ago by the Shankar Nagar police for abetting the suicide of
three members of a family, including two women, by the Sankar Nagar police in 2011. The three had
ended their lives unable to bear the harassment from Bhoologapandian.
The woman inspector spoke to the loan shark several times late in the night and also in the morning,
according to the mobile phone call list available with TOI. A departmental inquiry has been instituted
against the police officers. The loan shark allegedly used the community tag to hook the officers and a few
functionaries of political parties, police said.

The Pudukottai police too had slapped a cheating case against Bhoologapandian.
