Welcome

WELCOME
TO SLED
ISLAND
ABOUT OUR GUEST CURATOR
Sled Island is thrilled to have celebrated orchestral post-rock
band Godspeed You! Black Emperor as the festivals guest
curator for 2015.
Each year, Sled Islands guest curator helps set the direction
and tone of the festival through specialized programming
choices and with their presence at the event. This year, that
includes two very special showsGodspeed You! Black Emperors first in Calgaryat the beautiful Central United Church.
Additionally, the band has thoughtfully assembled an incredible set of artists to perform:

EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS NOTE

Here it is: the Sled Island 2015 program guide. Eighty eight
pages of carefully-crafted bios and event details that may
seem daunting at first to even the most seasoned festival
attendee, but dont let that deter you. This isnt a test. No one
will be quizzing you at the door. All we ask is that you take a
chance on one thing, be it a band, a movie, a comedy or art
show, or a venue youve never set foot in.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor, our guest curators this year,
brought us an eclectic array of acts that deserve your attention
(see the other half of this page for details). This years edition
also features many exciting collaborations: WRECK CITYs new
project DEMO TAPE; Shelter from the Storm, which will open
the doors of the Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre; a unique
and intimate performance by acclaimed producer Daniel Lanois in partnership with the National Music Centre; and, thanks
to Quickdraw Animation, the premiere of Dude, Thats Insane:
A Tribute To Chris Reimer, a collaborative animation project by
16 artists commemorating the brilliant and beloved musician
and artist. We will also bring the festival to the streets with the
first Canadian edition of Band Dialogue, an epic orchestral
installation composed and conducted by Seth Olinsky. On top
of all that, three important rules: 1) Go see Oxbow 2) Tell your
friends to go see Oxbow 3) Go see them againtheyre playing
twice.

Avec Le Soleil Sortant De Sa Bouche (Montreal, QC): An

experimental mix of funk, electronic and krautrock that has to
be heard to be believed.
Big Brave (Montreal, QC): These quiet/loud post-rockers are
also Southern Lords most recent signing.
Body/Head (Northampton, MA): The experimental guitar
duo of Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) and Bill Nace.
Carla Bozulich (Los Angeles, CA): An interdisciplinary artist
and art-rock provocateur.
David Dondero (Duluth, MN): Quite simply one of the greatest living songwriters.
The Ex (Amsterdam, Netherlands): Living legends, they
deftly navigate genres as diverse as punk, folk and free jazz.
Fred & Toody (Portland, OR): Members of Dead Moon and
Pierced Arrows, they are the incredible and incredibly proud
grandparents of modern garage rock.
Matana Roberts (Brooklyn, NY): A fascinating artist who
weaves music, sound, dance, poetry and narrative into her
improvisational structures.
Mdou Moctar (Agadez, Niger): Experimental, electronic Tuareg guitarist and star of Akounak Teggdalit Taha Tazoughai, a
Tuareg remake of Princes Purple Rain, screening at Sled Island.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor is a band weve dreamed
about seeing in Calgary for years, and we cant wait to welcome them and their curator picks to this years festival!

I am very proud of the festival and of what were able to accomplish with the help of so many. That the whole is greater
that the sum of its parts couldnt be more true in our case.
Thank you for supporting us and for helping us dream big and
make our vision come true.

FILM

Music is integral to Sled Island and to our film programming, as well. For 2015, Sled Island is pleased to present
a lineup of highly engaging films that reflect the festivals
broader theme of discovery and speak to the personal,
cultural and social role of music.
From the intimate performances of Anglophone musicians
eking it out in Montreal (A City Is An Island) to unsung
musical titan Danny Fields immense influence (Danny
Says), film at Sled Island truly celebrates discovering
new music. With that in mind, were pleased to present
Dont Think Ive Forgotten: Cambodias Lost Rock and Roll
and the mesmerizing Akounak Teggdalit Taha Tazoughai.
Infectious in the best possible way, 60s Cambodian rock

Nigeris going to make you want to buy a motorcycle and
drive through the Sahara blasting electric Tuareg guitar
music. Send us a postcard, please.
Were also proud to showcase emerging Canadian talent
in the form of shorts screened before our features. All
shorts will be available for viewing throughout the week
(June 22 - 28) at Nur Box Theatre, housed at Phil & Sebastian (2204 4th St. SW).
Events are 18+ unless otherwise noted, and admission
to all films is included with a Festival Discovery Pass or

DONT THINK IVE

FORGOTTEN: CAMBODIAS
LOST ROCK AND ROLL
DIR. JOHN PIROZZI, 105 MINS, USA /
CAMBODIA /FR ANCE, 2015

Dont Think Ive Forgotten: Cambodias Lost Rock and

Roll is a documentary exploring the unique music that
flourished in 1960s and early 1970s Cambodia. With
the Vietnam War threatening Cambodias borders, the
countrys young musicians applied traditional melodies to
Western rock influences, creating a distinct and tantalizing
sound. When the Khmer Rouge took control of the
country, it targeted and eliminated Western influences
and killed an estimated two million people. Were proud
to screen this new perspective on Cambodia and celebrate
its rebellious, exciting music.

boundaries of art, music and performance by featuring
projects that disrupt, reframe and challenge the
theoretical and physical spaces of these complementary
art forms. Performativity, temporality and transience are
common themes, but most of all, art at this years festival
is about collaboration and exchange. Whether between
artists, organizations, audiences or disciplines, many of
the projects in this years selection exist only through
partnership and participation. So, get involved! Bring

Comedy

COMEDY

We are very excited to present this years Sled Island

comedy lineup. I think we can safely saywithout
hyperbolethat this might be the most exciting comedy
lineup any festival has ever produced, and that you
will regret missing any of these shows until the end
of your days. In other words, you will be bragging that
you attended these soon-to-be-legendary shows, even
if you did not. So, avoid the temptation to lie to your
grandchildren and dont miss these shows! Bridget
Everett will blow your mind! Mark Little will crack you
up! Chris Locke will leave you in hysterics! Will Weldon
will make you care. Plus, a ton of incredible local talent
will inspire more civic pride than the 2010 election of
Mayor Naheed Nenshi. Clichs, sure, but theyre clichs
because theyre true.

CHRIS LOCKE

Funny as Hell and more, Everett has been named one of

Vulture Magazines Top 50 Comedians to Watch. While
it would be easy to call her show outrageous and leave it
at that, she prefers to say its like watching your drunk

Two years since their gritty, chaotic and wildly

popular self-titled project transformed an entire
neighbourhood of houses slated for demolition,
WRECK CITY returns with DEMO TAPE, a new
site-specific art exhibition at the old Penguin Car
Wash in Ramsay. Presented in conjunction with
Sled Island, WRECK CITY invited over 45 artists,
musicians, writers and performers to respond
to the defunct car wash, working onsite for one
month. Within this raw, utilitarian and malleable
context (not unlike a garage jam space),
artists were free to significantly alter spaces,
empowered by the understanding that their
work will eventually be destroyed along with the
surrounding building.
Originally instigated to explore the intersections
between music and art, DEMO TAPE has
evolved into a broader examination of sound
and image, action and object, transient and
solid, invisible and visible. Just as the overall
exhibition overlaps with Sled Island, DEMO TAPE
artists explore the overlap between various

PARTICIPANTS

disciplines, with a focus on ideas of change over

time. As with WRECK CITYs previous projects,
viewers of DEMO TAPE are invited to participate
in art as an immersive experience, activating
sounds and lights in the Pool Noodle Adventure
Cave, traveling through the eerie Ghost Car
Wash, hanging out with Stoned Cheerleaders,
exploring the categorized rubble of Future
Destruction, meeting Scrubby: The Last of His
Kind, reading Forty-Four Fragments for a Car
Wash, popping the soap suds of Wash Out and
much more. Both humorous and thoughtful,
DEMO TAPE was curated to engage, provoke,
give humility and offer a momentary escape
to the sublime. On a broader level, the project
speaks to the violent turnover connecting past
with future in Calgary, the radical potential
of utilizing forgotten civic spaces, and the
underground art/music scenes that make our
city secretly awesome. This is an all-ages event.

All Ages

ALL AGES
Sled Island is proud to present the all-ages portion of its 2015 programming. With tons
of bands playing shows open to minors, as well as film, art and special events accessible
to attendees of any age, theres always something for our younger pals to do!

HIGHLIGHTS

Sled Islands 2015 all-ages program is as diverse as ever, with a range of emerging and
established artists playing shows at many of our favourite venues. Below are just a few
highlights of this years offerings.

#1 ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION

the horn-skronking hootenanny of Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and local duo

Shaani Cage.

CENTRAL UNITED CHURCH

This year, we are lucky to have this gorgeous venue for three intimate shows. Electronic
wizard Son Lux and haunting dream-pop act Hundred Waters play Wednesday,
while guest curators Godspeed You! Black Emperor play Friday and Saturday.

TUBBY DOG

Were opening this usually 18+ venue to punks of all ages on Friday afternoon for
a special hardcore show featuring Turnstile, Mortality Rate, Failgiver and
more!

This is the place to see some of the best Sled Island punk shows (I Hate Sex,
Open Letters, Taxa) as well as newer talent from the indie world (Crosss, The
Radiation Flowers, Heaven For Real). Tubby Dog is a staple in the Calgary
all-ages scene and one of our favourite hangouts for hot dogs and arcade games.

OLYMPIC PLAZA

NATIONAL MUSIC CENTRE

For 2015, weve condensed the festivities at this outdoor site into one day of nonstop
talent. Pioneers of post-punk Television will headline, while the bill also includes
post-hardcore icons Drive like Jehu (in a very rare performance), current garagerock figurehead King Tuff, the incredibly fun Ex Hex, local heroes Viet Cong,

This is the place where intimate space and huge ideas meet. Godspeed You!
Black Emperor selections Carla Bozulich plays Thursday and Matana
Roberts performs on Friday. Both of these artists are innovative in their fields and
bring one-of-a-kind musical ideas to the festival.

VIET CONG

DEXTRESS
YOUNG TALENT
Once again, Sled Island is excited to highlight young acts
who show that age and experience have nothing to do
with talent. These bands can go toe-to-toe with the roadtested bands theyll be sharing bills with. Were excited
to welcome noisy experimenters The Basement
Demons back this year, and are looking forward
to some other excellent acts making their Sled Island
debuts. Grindcore punks Fuckworld, classic riffrockers Dextress and scream-your-guts-out blasters I
Hate Sex: we salute you!

compounds since 2011. These noise-rock experiments are calculatedly
improvisational with each phantom limb being carefully sutured into
place to create a whole that is hard to define. Labels have never stuck
to Gordon, maybe because she doesnt shy away from shattering
stereotypes. The icon recently drew back the veil in her autobiography,
Girl In A Band, wherein she describes her trials and triumphs as one

Black Emperor are catastrophic instrumentalists with a rabid
following. Their first-ever appearance in Calgary will feature
two back-to-back nights at the beautiful Central United
Church, in which theyll deliver their gorgeous, menacing,
anarcho-minded discography. Masterfully fashioned by
drums, keyboards, multiple guitars, basses, film projections
and a violin, their dense, wall-of-sound approach has long
been emulated but never matched by the many post-rock
acts that followed in their wake. Since their formation in
1994, the mesmerizing collective has released multiple
critically acclaimed works. They quietly disbanded in 2003;
nine years later, they released Allelujah! Dont Bend!
Ascend! with little forewarning. The album continued their
devastating lineage of wordless resistance set to swelling,
cinematic instrumental rock. Featuring impressive dynamic
range that incorporated triumphant orchestral flourishes,
hair-raising drone, bombastic doom and much more, its
a tense, ever-shifting journey of sonic destruction. In mid2015, lightning struck again as GY!BE released Asunder,
Sweet and Other Distress. The album continues down their
resolutely defiant and musically diverse path with song
titles and imagery that reflect on collective political action
set to a soundtrack of instrumental defiance. Godspeed You!

Sled Island 2015

Bands

SAT 9:00PM Bamboo

Have you ever heard a hook so powerful that it rattles you

to the very core? It was probably a Hag Face song. The breakup anthem, the Pagan tribute, the party crasherthey do it
all and they do it with such punk rock aplomb that itll leave
you bruised, but smiling.
hagface.bandcamp.com

her songs like intimate rooms, filled with themes and

thoughtful details you can live in for a while. Her rich, liquid
voice and spare fingerpicking spill her vulnerabilities in
precise measurements, making them your own.
herharbour.com

HEXRAY

CALGARY, AB

HEARTBEAT(S)
VANCOUVER, BC

SAT 12:30AM Hifi Club

Formerly half of oddball duo LOL Boys (Friends of Friends

Music), Heartbeat(s) is a slightly less cheeky project from
Markus Garcia. Echoes of classic Detroit and Chicago sounds
are anchored by an all business R&B twist. It may sound
like a lot to take in, but at its core, Heartbeat(s) is a minimal
affair aimed straight at the dance floor.
aslsinglesclub.bandcamp.com

WED 11:00PM Palomino (Upstairs)

Its not just the fuzzed-out guitar riffs and sweet pop hooks
that make HexRay a pleasure to watch live. There's a
sweetness in the vocal harmonies between drummer Laura
Lief and guitarist Dallin Ursenbach that takes the band to a
whole new level in a genre that needs some fresh legs.
hexray.bandcamp.com

HIGH WASTED
VANCOUVER, BC

SAT 8:30PM Nite Owl (Downstairs)

HEAVEN FOR REAL

HALIFA X, NS

THU 9:00PM Broken City (Patio)

SAT 3:00PM Tubby Dog

Halifaxs classiest popsmiths are back! Forgoing high drama

for tightly wound guitars, bouncy bass lines and good old
fashioned charisma, Heaven For Real are pared down to just
the unfussy art rock essentials. Smooth, hooky tunes and
good vibes guaranteed.
www.facebook.com/heavenforreal

HER HARBOUR
OT TAWA , ON

FRI 8:30PM Wine-Ohs

Montreal-born singer-songwriter Gabrielle Giguere builds

Shimmy to the left, shake it to the right, everybody make

out and feel alright! Its the keys in their tunes that turn
this into a glammed-up version of your favourite garage
rock purists, but the fury and fun are ever-present. This is
late-night, sweaty-dancin, hand-holdin til the sun comes
up rock n roll.
highwastedxo.bandcamp.com

tone and poetic vocal melodies. Their adept skill and

refreshing energy make for a listening experience that is as
playful as it is stimulating.
homebodydenver.bandcamp.com

HOOD JOPLIN
EDMONTON, AB

FRI 10PM Hifi Club

Hood Joplin is the kind of boss who stops and starts dance
floors at her leisure. Her rapping ability is off the charts and
she can rock a breakneck BPM with the same ease that she
gives contact highs with her queasy chopped n screwed
productions. This is the tough side of Manicure Records, baby.
manicurerecords.club

HUMBLE GIANTS
CALGARY, AB

WED 10:00PM Flames Central

SAT 10:30PM National Music Centre
Humble Giants are at the heart of YYC Hip Hop, tirelessly
pouring passion and personality into the scene. Having
shared bills with Blackalicious, Killer Mike and Talib Kweli,
the duo have made it a habit to kill all of their shows
through incredible flow and charisma. Representing with
finesse, they keep the hometown fires burning. Who the
livest? They the livest.

HOMEBODY
DENVER, CO

THU 11:00PM Tubby Dog

SUN 7:00PM Republik

Homebody embody the true DIY spirit: an experimental

rock band that records from their Rocky Mountain home.
Their angular sound is aided by their bright, jangly guitar

PENTAGRAM

WED 12:00AM Dickens

Pentagram are the true pioneers of American doom metal.

Their history is as storied as it is confusing: early recordings
were shelved and postponed following years of botched
record deals, dissolved lineups and the general troubles
of legendary singer and songwriter Bobby Liebling, who
suffered from harrowing addiction. Continuously struggling

Sled Island 2015

throughout the 80s, 90s and 2000s because of the ongoing

turmoil in Lieblings life, Pentagram remained criminally underrated despite developing and defining doom metal alongside Trouble and Saint Vitus, melding slower tempos, blues
rock sensibilities and clean vocals with occult imagery and
offerings. At that, Pentagram was particularly adept. Utilizing
dirty production for their filthy groove rockers, heightening
the unearthly wail of Liebling and low end soloing of Victor
Griffin, who rejoined the project multiple times. Chronicled
in the critically acclaimed 2011 documentary Last Days Here,
the band was reinvigorated by the push that followed the documentarys release. It not only put into perspective just how
special Pentagram is, inspiring just about every heavy band
going with their bastardized, early-Sabbathian jams, but also
how miraculous it is that they continue to make impossibly
heavy and inspiring music to this day. Miss this at your peril:
its Pentagrams first show ever in Calgary and the infamous
Griffin is back in full force. Of course, the indomitable Liebling
will be at the helm, doing his infamous danse macabre
shuffle while wailing like a banshee.

It didnt take long for punk to bop away from chewin out a rhythm on
some bubblegum and into headier, loftier spaces. Punk may have been
started by street-ready, mutant teenagers, but it found a home in bands
that took the anarchic tenets of the genre and collided them with higher-minded ideals and aesthetics. Consequently, post-punk was born and
Television was there to deliver it. Though the bands 1977 debut Marquee
Moon didnt immediately gain the feverish traction we associate with it
today, there is no doubt that Television changed the vocabulary of punk
and post-punk forever. The band stood apart from their peers by taking
the three-chord basics of punk and stretching them long and thin across
anxious, nervous landscapes. Countless post-punk bands in the past 35
years have tried to deconstruct how Television did so much with so little,
but all have come up short. Post-punk wouldnt be the same without
these legends.

Green Island

GREEN
ISLAND
Sled Island is dedicated to operating an
environmentally responsible festival. We pride
ourselves on working with festival attendees,
artists and partners to implement initiatives that
make Sled Island and our community responsible
environmental stewards. Sustainability is
an integral part of Sled Island fun, and we
encourage all to participate!

RECYCLING AND WASTE

REDUCTION
Sled Island is continually improving our waste
and recycling management as well as working to
reduce waste at its source. We aim to make Sled
Island a waste-free event that reuses, recycles
or composts all waste. The festival diverted 88%
of its waste from landfills in 2014, and is aiming
to divert 90% in 2015. Everyone can be a part of

our Green Team: sort your waste, recycling and

compostables into the right bins, carry a reusable
water bottle and help our awesome volunteers
keep the festival clean! Special thanks to our
partner The City of Calgary for helping us lessen
our environmental impact.

Our friends at Prohab Helmet Society will be

riding with us again this year and working to
keep your noggins safe. These lovely people
will be with us at Olympic Plaza, selling helmets
at wallet-friendly prices. If you dont have a
helmet, or are looking for a new one, come
check them out.

BIKES
Riding bikes is fun and, without a doubt, the best
way to get around Sled Island. This year, we are
expanding our bike parking at some of our larger
venues for even better accessibility. A big thank
you to our official bike sponsor, First Calgary
Financial, who makes it possible for us to provide
bike parking at our outdoor stages and many of
your favourite venues. Look out for our Bike Valet
team who will park your bike for you, keeping it
safe until youre ready to roll out to your next show.

Finally, biking is now easier and safer than ever.

Thank You

THANK YOU
Sled Island is humbled by the help of so many dedicated, talented and just plain lovely people who worked tirelessly in the
hope that it would lead to something amazing. We believe that it has. We tried our best to include each and every one of you
here, but to those who may have gotten lost in the commotion, we offer an extra-special thanks.
