Designation

The design of the ventilating system for this ship is based on the Routing
Considerations. There are four types of the Routing Considerations named as Type 1(F =
1.0), Type 2 (F = 1.0), Type 3 (F = 1.5) and Type 4 (F = 2.5). Each type of Routing
Considerations has the Routing Factor (F). This project required the ventilating system
using the Type 4 (F = 2.5) and it has the specific designation.

As shown in the figure, outside air is brought into the engine room using supply
fans, and discharged toward the turbocharger air inlets on the engines. Ventilation
exhaust fans should be mounted or ducted from the corners of the engine room. This
system mixes the hottest air in the engine room with the incoming cool air, raising the
temperature of all air in the engine room. It also interferes with the natural convection
flow of hot air rising to exhaust fans. Engine rooms can be ventilated this way, but it
requires extra-large capacity ventilating fans.

Calculation Method

The calculation of the ventilation required for the engine room space must be
calculated using the ventilation formula as below.

V = volume flowrate
H = heat radiated from engine, 213 kW
D = Density of air at air temperature 38C, 1.099 kg/m3
CP = Specific heat of air, 0.017 kW.min/kg.C
T = Permissible temperature rise in engine room, 12.5C
Com. Air = 0.1 m3

V=

213
+0 2.5
1.0990.01712.5

V = 2280 m3/min

The ventilating system is depending on the heat radiated from the engine that
required the cooling air in order to cool and maintain the engine room temperature.
Based on the calculation volume flow rate will be obtained for the engine room. The
volume flow rate of air required to cool the engine is V = 2280 m3/min.

Based on the volume flow rate obtained, the diameter for the ventilation ducting
can be determined but the velocity of the air must not exceed 11m/s. Referring to the
calculation in the excel sheet, the diameter suitable for the ducting is 2.1m. All of the
calculation in the excel sheet for Ventilating System must consider the entire K factor
for the equipment used in the system.

Fan Sizing

The fan sizing of this Ventilating System was according to the flow rate V=
2280m3/min and PL = 284 Pa, the appropriate fan is the model below.

Conclusion

The ducting or Ventilating System is the crucial requirement for the engine room
as it will control the temperature inside the engine room so that the engine room always
in the suitable temperature that is not exceed 49C. The selection of the Ventilating Type
is also must be suitable with the engine room and machinery arrangement. There are few
factors that need to be considered such as machinery arrangement, heat radiation, engine
room volume, duct diameter, fan size and the pressure loss.

The cable sizing for the wiring system is depending on the current flowing in the
cables. It is important to know the suitable cable size as it will support the current flow
in the cable. Wrong selection of the cable size will cause short circuit to the wiring
system. The total power usage must not exceed the power produce by the chosen
generator.

Ventilation System and Wiring System are among the other system that very
important in the ship as it will support the ship so that the ship can operate and provide
the service to meet the purpose of the ship.
