Star set
for stage

Enjoy a
classic
THERE couldnt be a better way
to celebrate a beautiful June
evening than by watching one
of Shakespeares most popular
plays in the beautiful gardens
of Rhosygilwen.
Quantum Theatre returns
to the venue near Cilgerran
with one of their energetic and
amusing productions of A Midsummer Nights Dream starting
at 6pm on Sunday, June 14.
This is a brand new production of love and intrigue, magic
and celebration set on that
most dangerous of nights when
fairies are abroad and nothing
is as it seems.
It is thought that A Midsummer Nights Dream was written originally to be performed
outdoors for a private wedding
party and indeed it lends itself
perfectly to an open-air setting.
Using not just the stage but

the surrounding greenery
Quantum Theatre presents
the play as a flight of magical
fancy, with willow-the-wisp
fairies, unsuspecting artisans and ardent young lovers
woven together by the finest

a dream, past the wit of man
to say what dream it was.
Performances will include
a 20-minute interval. Audiences are advised to bring
warm clothes and a folding

chair or rug.
Picnics are welcome, but organisers ask for no glassware
please.
Tickets are available online

X FACTOR and Im a
Celebrity Get Me Out of
Here star, Jake
Quickenden, will be performing in Eddie Rocks
on Friday, June 12.
Jakes first taste of stardom was on the 2012 series
of the X-Factor.
He was mentored by
Pussycat Doll Nicole
Scherzinger, who picked
2012 winner James Arthur
ahead of Jake.
Jake returned to the
X-Factor in 2014, where he
went one stage further and
made it to the live shows,
mentored by former Spice
Girl Mel B.
Not long after exiting the
show, Jake was flown out

Jake Quickenden
to the jungle in Australia
to take part in the 14th series of Im a Celebrity and
he reached the final.
Jake will perform two
shows. Recess hosts the
first instalment at 7.30pm

A silent audience for a

passionate performance
CONCERT REVIEW:
Anastasiya Kryvanos
By Tom Sparkes
MY RECITAL tonight will
be a history of music for
classical guitar, said Anastasiya Kryvanos. Beyond
the walls of St Tudwals
church in Llanstadwell the
wind was strengthening
as predicted by various
weather warnings, but
inside silence fell.
Anastasiya began the
concert with several
compositions by English
Renaissance composer John
Dowland. Originally the
three pieces were intended
to be played on lute, a predecessor of the guitar, but
in Anastasiyas hands they
sounded just as delicate
and precise. As she played
entirely without amplification, the audience filling
the church collectively sat
forward on their pews to
listen, and were rewarded
with an extremely intimate
performance. So quietly sat
the audience that at times
I could hear my own pen
scratching the page as I
sketched out notes for this
article.
The last Renaissance piece
of the evening was Anthony
Holbornes Galliard Heigh
Ho Holiday. The Galliard
was a form of Renaissance
dance popular across much
of Europe during the 16th
Century, and was at the
time quite a complex dance
(think left, right, left, right,
cadenceor something
along those lines). Anastasiya performed with rhythmic
aplomb, impressive fluidity
and technical prowess.
As the shadows slowly
elongated with the setting sun we entered the
Baroque era. As I read
in the programme that
Anastasiya would be playing J.S Bachs Suite in A
Minor I decided that no

better choice could have
been made to honour the
period. The suite is one of
only two lute suites which
Bach wrote from scratch.
Others exist, but only as
reworkings of violin or
cello compositions. The first
movement, the Preludio, is a
through-composed movement which remains in
two voices throughout. The
upper voicing is flexible and
tightly ornamented, whilst
the lower voicing provides a
steady accompaniment. The
dexterity required to play
this piece is considerable,
but Anastasiya gave such an
accomplished performance
that when I closed my eyes
it was easy to imagine two
guitarists sitting where only
one sat in reality. The Gigue
which succeeds the Preludio
is elegantly written and

entirely, decided to move

home so Trrega could
study music. His reasoning
was that even if his son
went blind he could still
play. Prelude in A Minor
is a short piece, incredibly so in fact, but it is as
charming as it is short.
As we arrived into the
Twentieth Century I feared
that the evening would
pass all too quickly. For the
next piece Anastasiya had
chosen Manuel De Fallas
composition written to
honour the passing of his
friend Claude Debussy.
Homenaje pour le Tombeau de Debussy is a masterpiece written by one of
the worlds greatest composers. Benjamin Britten,
upon hearing it performed
by Julian Bream, said,
The piece is only seven

was performed with deep

sensitivity. This is a technically difficult suite to play,
although when done well
it does not sound so, and
Anastasiya has an ability
to make her guitar almost
sing with expression; a feat
not readily accomplished
by many other classical
guitar players.
Anastasiya moved the
programme forward into
the Romantic period with a
composition by Francisco
Trrega; his Prelude in A
Minor. How Trrega came
to play the guitar is an
interesting diversion. As a
small boy he escaped from
his nanny one afternoon
only to fall foul of an irrigation ditch into which he
fell, injuring his eyes. His
father, fearing that one day
his son may lose his vision

minutes long but there is

twenty minutes of music
in it. I am more familiar
with the classical guitar in
a flamenco setting with all
its fiery passion and fierce
rhythmic stance, but Anastasiyas performance of
the Homenaje revealed
an incredible honesty and
vulnerability in the instruments timbre that I had
not heard before. From the
wonderfully atmospheric
opening passage through
to flighty arpeggiated
chords and the ethereal
use of natural harmonics,
Anastasiya gave a performance rich in dynamic
contrast. This is what
music sounds like when
a performer is passionate
about what they play.
The recital came to
a close with two Leo
Brouwer compositions
the last of which, Un Dia
De Novembre, was an
exquisite conclusion to the
evenings music. Originally composed to be the
soundtrack for a Humberto
Salas film of the same
name, it became infinitely
more popular than the
picture it was designed to
accompany. At the end of a
tremendous performance
the last note faded away as
though nothing had ever
happened.
As I have come to expect
from the St Tudwals
Music for a Summer Evening performances an hour
of inspiring and accomplished music slipped by
unrestrained. Saddened
though I was that I could
not spend another hour
listening to Anastasiya
perform, I left the blustery
grounds of St Tudwals
Church thoroughly excited
about what the next concert would bring.

Clara Clay will host a singing workshop at the

Queens Hall

SPAN Arts' monthly singing

workshops take place on the
second Wednesday of each
month at the Queens Hall in
Narberth.
Today tutor Clara Clay hosts
a friendly two-hour singing
workshop, which is open to all
abilities.
Clara is a member of the
Natural Voice Practitioners

Network and runs an a cappella club in Llandeilo.

She has also taught at the National Street Choir festival in
Aberystwyth and has returned
many times by popular request
to teach the St Dogmaels community choir.
After playing folk fiddle in
her youth, Clara later became
interested in harmony song

workshops by stumbling upon

NVPN workshop leaders and
realising how easily accessible, yet supremely satisfying,
this forum of music making is.
In her words, Clara just loves
to be among a group of voices
resonating together.
