s I settle into the twilight of my term as

Chairman of the Board, this new publication is a reminder of one of the goals
of this years board and PR Committee:
to develop and provide our members an
enhanced newsletter up-to-date content and a better
look and feel.
A special thank you to Julie Sabbagh in doing all the
footwork needed to get this project up and running.
Like our PR Committee, another committee and
project the board allowed to be carried over into this
year is the Ombudsman Committee, a project we all
felt was long overdue for us entrepreneurs in Vacaville.
Starting Your Business in Vacaville is an 11-step
guide to get the entrepreneur in you off to a great start.
A big thank you to our Ombudsman Committee and
City of Vacaville staff in what already is a must-have
for anyone wanting to start a business in Vacaville. It is
surely a welcomed resource for many up-and-coming

successful businesses.

tidbit for our new Comments quarterly newsletter, I
wanted to let you know the search process for our new
President/CEO is near its completion.
We are pleased to share we have had a number of
quality applicants. There have been some tough choices;
I cant help but be extremely excited for a new chapter and what lays ahead for the Vacaville Chamber of
Commerce.

dreams of the future

ack in the dark ages, when my family and I first

arrived in Vacaville, I envisioned that great big
area of open land bordering I-80 and I-505 as
the home of a stadium.
That vision was long before Genentech, Kaiser Medical Center or State Fund and, naturally, I wanted
it to be the home of the Giants or 49ers, my teams. Immediately, there was laughter at the thought of the Vacaville
Giants or Niners from those people who had no idea that
major league teams often are not located in the cities they
are named for. I thought what a stimulus for the local
economy, plus the fact that other companies and corporations would want to locate near such a stadium, bringing
increasing numbers of jobs and benefits to our small city
of 28,000 people.
On the heels of the thought of a stadium, I also suggested a monorail system that would utilize government
property, therefore no cost in the purchase of land. It
would be elevated down the middle of I-80.
To this day, I believe the future of transportation could
be a return to rails, all of which could utilize the elevated
space in the middle of our freeway systems. One track
would be used for local traffic while the other could be a
bullet train that could propel us all the way to New York
City, with certain limited stops in between.
I recall speaking about this concept to Supervisor Jim
Spering while serving with him on the Solano Transportation Authority. Gov. Jerry Browns bullet train proposal
would be a much better idea if it also followed the existing
freeway rather than try to utilize the current rails through
the peninsula cities.
I flew home from Florida recently and met a man who
was retired from Southern Pacific. He had a great love of
railroads. Upon sharing some of my dreams, he became
excited as he described having very similar thoughts. He
said such a train could easily make the trip from Phoenix,
his hometown, to Los Angeles in two hours. I dont know
about the two hours, but just think of not needing to drive
the freeway or take a crowded flight. Perhaps one could
even load the family car on the train and have a mode of
transportation once they arrive at their destination.
As a preschool child, my grandparents took me to the
New York Worlds Fair and I gazed upon the highways
of the future. It was a great sight with highways that
crisscrossed one another and were both ground level and
elevated with little cars zooming along at speeds greater
than most automobiles of the day could ever attain. It
was a display that stays alive in my mind today. And then,
during the Eisenhower Administration, we began building
our freeway systems across the country. I eventually saw
this 1939 Worlds Fair futuristic dream become a reality.

So, whats my point? I can only cite it with a timeworn phrase of thinking out of the box.
We need to be visionary. Without such vision we
would still be using the horse as our primary mode of
transportation. There would be no Internet and iPhone
would be unknown. Just think of what we can do as a
business community if we allow ourselves to think out of
the box.
A vibrant business community is the catalyst that
creates and stimulates growth. It possesses the stuff
that makes dreams come true and it does not need any
government intervention or control to bring about a better
and brighter future. But, we must not leave government
completely out of the equation.
In the case of the elevated tracks on the freeways, it
is government land that will allow the overall costs to
be lowered. Without the cost of land purchase, the right
entrepreneurs will see that the system is put into place.
Business profits and employment will soar and as a result,
government will also reap benefits through a healthy
business climate and higher employment with well-paying
jobs, which will allow government to provide the Constitutional mandates that only the peoples government can
provide.
Therefore, it is business that drives the machine that
allows government to provide those services the people
need, but business also needs an advocate. That advocate
needs to be available for the entrepreneurs dreams to
come true.
What I have determined over the years is that a strong
chamber of commerce can be that advocate. The chamber
is not in business for any other reason than to assist other
businesses. It is not a function of government. It is not a
community organization. It is business for business, and
it will, in fact, face down government, at any level, in order
to address, preserve and further business within the community, state and nation.
An active chamber such as your Vacaville Chamber of
Commerce will oppose any individual, group or organization that impedes the growth of legitimate business,
employment and profitability. However, it will also partner
with those same entities be they government or otherwise in order to support business growth and generally
realize that it is the businesses of this nation that drives
the economy, employs the people and generally provides
for the well-being of a community.
Now, lets get busy and build those stadiums, lay those
railroad tracks, and build a future by turning dreams into
reality.

Chamber takes the pulse of Vacaville businesses

he Vacaville Chamber of Commerce

delivered the first Business Walk in
Vacaville on Monday, Nov. 17, 2014. The
primary goals of the walk were:

To identify what challenges businesses are facing

To provide local businesses with educational
resources

To build working relationships between decision

makers and business owners

To celebrate and promote our local businesses

During the two-hour blitz, 30 business and

civic leaders walked door-to-door throughout
Vacaville and connected with 250 business owners. Their conversation focused on three basic
questions: how is business, what can be done to
improve local business conditions, and what is one
thing your business needs to be more successful?
The information obtained from this Business
Walk captured the pulse of the local economy and
will ultimately assist the Chamber in tailoring
their services to their members and the business
community.

QUESTION 1: HOW IS BUSINESS?

Of the 248 businesses that responded, 70 percent reported that
business was good/great, 23 percent said steady/fair and 5 percent
reported poor/slow.
The businesses that reported good/great shared that business is up
and continuously improving though specific reasons for the increases
were not provided.
Businesses that reported steady/fair alluded to customers not ready
to spend as much yet, however business is steadily increasing.
Businesses that reported poor/ slow stated they were extremely
impacted by the recession and things have not bounced back yet.

BUSINESS CONDITIONS?
Although many business owners are positive and satisfied
with doing business in Vacaville, some top issues and areas
of concerns are the need to improve the process of licensing
and permitting, reduce local crime, and over 50 percent of
business owners expressed their desire for more accessible
parking in Downtown Vacaville and the Nut Tree Plaza.
Business owners also expressed concern of a recent increase of homeless persons in Vacaville.

QUESTION #3: WHAT IS ONE THING YOUR BUSINESS NEEDS

TO BE MORE SUCCESSFUL?
When asked What is one thing your business needs to
be more successful? 58 percent of respondents said affordable marketing/advertising assistance. Twenty-eight percent
of business owners reported their business would benefit from
education/training resources and also stated the need for assistance in finding qualified staff. Twelve percent of respondents
stated that financial assistance/resources or access to capital
would help their business be more successful. Another common
suggestion was to improve signage throughout the city.
