Evart student Kyra Derscheid

placed fourth in the 46th America & Me essay contest. Farm
Bureau Insurance sponsors the
annual event. Kyra, 13, is the
daughter of Dan and Sharra
Derscheid.
Kyra wrote about her great
grandmother, Helen Derscheid.
Helen was the co-founder of
Pineview Homes, an Evart
home for adjudicated youth.
In her essay, Kyra wrote that

her great-grandmother has

the power of kindness, giving
advice, understanding and wisdom. She is such an inspiration
to me and others.
Contest winners met with Lt.
Gov. Brian Calley at the State
Capital, had lunch aboard the
Michigan Princess at Grand
River Park in Lansing and attended a Lansing Lugnuts baseball game. At the game, the winning students tossed T-shirts
and other items into the crowd
between innings. They also received a baseball signed by all

the Lugnuts.
Farm Bureau Insurance
began the contest in 1968 to
encourage Michigan youth
to explore their roles in
Americas future. The contest
has evolved, and now contest
officials encourage students
to write about their personal
heroes. Since Farm Bureau Insurance originated the contest,
more than half a million Michigan eighth graders have participated in it.
This year, more than 4,000 students from more than 400 Michi-

gan schools submitted essays.

A panel of judges that included
the insurance companys executive vice president, the essay
contest founder, and the teacher
of the ten statewide winners
from the 2013-2014 contest determined this years winners.
Kyra said it was really exciting when she learned she was
one of the winners. She was at
volleyball practice at the time.
Her mother brought in an envelope addressed to Kyra that
arrived in the mail that day and
she opened it there.

What WAS It?

Pictured left to right: dinner

The seafood fork is ideally
sized to help break into the
legs and other tasty parts of
crustaceans crabs, lobster,
shrimp. The other use is alongside of your shrimp cocktail
there arent any shells to break
through with that menu item,
but the petite size of the tines
of the fork make for delicate
dunking of shrimp meat into
the red cocktail sauce.
Afraid that as far as lore
goes, we have to wrinkle our
forehead and say tisk tisk
to the 11th century Italians
for getting in the way of fork
progress. Forks had been
in use as far back as the 400s
elsewhere, but when a Middle
Eastern princess married into
an elite Italian family, the Italians who hadnt been quite
that modern around the dining
table, well, they baulked (and
baulked big-time).
In fact, as the story goes,
when she began using the
beautifully crafted, handy
forks as part of the wedding
meal celebration (flatly refusing to dine using her fingers

at the formal occasion) the

priests in Venice, who were
among the guests, were horrified. In fact, most all of the
guests were shocked. The
Church went as far as to reprimand her with a formal, severe
censure. It is said that the
Churchs stance pivoted on the
following assertion: God in
his wisdom has provided man
with natural forks his fingers. Therefore it is an insult
to Him to substitute artificial
metallic forks when eating.
Using the utensil was condemned as an affront to Gods
intentions, so when the young
bride died shortly into her
marriage, the Church succeeded in keeping the population
from embracing the use of fork
any time soon.

When Elvis tribute artist Jake Slater came

to town to kick off Evarts summertime slate
of concerts, crowds responded. Al Weinburg,
director of Evarts Downtown Development
Authority estimated that more than 300
were in attendance. The overcast skies and
the chilly breeze that came from the north
did little to suppress the enthusiasm of
the crowd. People arrived wearing jackets,
vests, coats and the hardy ones in
jeans and T-shirts. Several well-mannered
dogs were in the audience, too. A number
of concert goers danced and did their own
Elvis impersonations to the strains of the
music.

Elvis and Laura West

inspired the crowd to
dance.

Evart Elementary School students end year at SpringHill Camps

By Andy Duffy
Cadillac News

Evart Elementary School students converged on

SpringHill Camps Monday for an end-of-the-schoolyear field day.
The field day is an annual event. The camps sprawl
across 960 wooded, rolling acres.

More than 300 students in kindergarten through

fourth grade participated. The children went down
zip lines, canoed, climbed walls, were able to Euro
bungee, and went through a petting farm that houses
goats, sheep, a mini horse, rabbits, chickens, ducks,
a llama and a donkey and went through the climbing
tower.
It was really awesome. We had the whole school

out there, first-grade teacher Bonnie Villwock said.

The kids got to choose whatever activity they wanted and give it a try. We had lots of parent volunteers,
the SpringHill staff was really awesome, and the
weather was great.
The Evart organization Parents for Kids holds fundraisers throughout the year and helped underwrite
the cost of the field day.
